Need Help Painting Marine Shoulderpads

I had a great idea. Instead of attaching the shoulderpads to the marine, and then painting them, why not paint them separately and glue them together when I'm done.

 

The question I have is how do you hold a shoulderpad to paint it?

 

Also, no one seems to recommend this online, is there something I'm missing?

I have not tried this, but I would expect it to work: take a cocktail stick, add some fresh Blu Tack to one end, and then push the inside of the shoulder pad to the Blu Tack. Then push the other end of the cocktail stick to something that is easy to hold.

 

Personally, I prefer to paint the shoulder pads in their final position.

The reason I thought it would be easier if the color scheme was different, then you could prime/paint without having to worry about base colors.

 

In my case, I am painting red corsair models all black/silver/red as Risen Dark Angels... but I want to give them green shoulder pads so they match the rest of the dark angels army.

I normally compromise by priming the pads separately and then gluing them on. They are easier to paint when on the model in most cases but priming separately means that you can get any awkward places that might be hard to reach after assembly.

Some options I use:

 

1) Small number/Individual models: Prime the pads on the sprue. Clip off, and tidy up gates. Take an old paint pot with a flat top. Put a thumb-sized lump of blu-tac on it, stick the pad to the tac for clean-up paint and other layers. Glue on when ready.

 

2) Batch painting: Clip the pads off the sprue. Glue them onto the models. Spray the pad the colour you want. Blu-tac over the pad. Prime rest of model, finish model, remove tac, finish pad.

 

3) Old size 1/2 brush handle with the old, massacred brush head cut off. Blu-tac pad to round end so it's a good, reasonably firm fit. Paint. Glue when ready.

 

The second method works better if the pad colour is lighter than your main model colour, eg: Ragnar's Great Company (red and yellow) but main model colour basecoat is The Fang or similar.
