Multi-Priming

Do you do it? Is it worth it? 

 

So my Death Worlders have arrived which I'm going to use for my Black Templar serf army. They have gas masks for some reason I envision as white? But I'm going to be going with either dark greys or blacks for the rest of their uniforms.

 

Does this warrent separate priming? Is it worth it? I hear people copmlain about white priming, but I'm not sure I have the same experience on a handful of elves I've painted.

 

Would it be better to prime them black even though I will paint the masks white?

Yeah, absolutely, priming in different parts/sub-assemblies in different colours is absolutely a viable option that will make your job as painter faster and easier.

I agree, if you have the option to prime them in subassemblies and use different colours, then go for it.

 

If you're using an undercoat that also has a colour in a pot, I would also suggest giving the miniature a go with a paintbrush, using the pot colour, as they tend to have a slightly different finish from the spray can. This will save you some colour difference later down the road, for example if you have to correct a grey area on the masks using the pot colour on an undercoated head, would would see the difference on the finished miniature. Especially in blacks the difference is quite stark (I should know, I've painted 5-6k points of Black Legion).

Thanks, what do you guys use to mask off? greenstuff? or tape?

The only masking I've done until now, was on a Warhound Titan shin guard, to imitate Legio Mortis colour stripes, and I used Tamiya masking tape. Depending what you're looking to paint/mask, you might even use painter's tape, which would cost waaaay less. But you'll need to cut it to size and shape.

 

I've used blue tack before, but you need to be extra careful, as it can rip off other stuff when removing it. 

 

If you're in the US, a cheap solution is also silly putty, which has essentially the same consistency as masking goo here in the UK/EU. If you are in the UK/EU then you can try masking putty/goo, which is basically a reusable putty that does not stick that much, and you can use it to cover big areas (such as knight shoulder parts for example) and shape it any way you like:
