Yes, GW unfortunately felt that they had to concoct some awkward tie-in-fiction to "explain" the changed look of their toy soldiers, as they knew some people are far too precious about minute details like that. But the real reason why marines now look different than they used to is the same than why Robert Pattinson's batsuit looks different than Adam West's. Once you accept that it all makes much more sense and you can stop worrying about the fluff that ceased to make any sense a long time ago.

 

And the reason why the Red Corsairs do not look like primaris, is because that is the loyalist design language, and they want the chaos faction to look visually distinct.

I think the Battleforces of different armour marks is highly unlikely because of the cost of holding up to 3 more SKUs for pretty much the same thing (unless you'd offer different add-ons), and I say this as someone who really doesn't like the MkVI proliferation, to the point it'll be a couple of squads at most for me as "field test units" as I prefer the older lore.

 

I think the way GW could make the best of it (but wouldn't work for third party, how many people order GW direct?) would be an online bundle: "Pick a Tactical Squad box, upgrade sprue X/Y/Z (Special Weapons, Heavy Weapons, Melee), add a Contemptor and Rhino (or maybe a couple of options, maybe swap Contemptor for another Rhino) and it'll discount for you.

 

Again though, it would only really work for GW direct (although Element Games do bundles for 40K).

Aside-aside: this conversation made me break out my old copies of Index Astartes, and re-read the Cursed Founding article. 

 

It's a bit of fluff about an Inquisitor having intercepted an AdMech group's finding of the five-millennia old research centre where the experiments on the gene-seed took place. The planet is called "Incunabla". The research facility is marked by an Imperial Eagle, and inside there were old signs of fighting. The AdMech explorers discover six incubation tubes; three empty... three containing (dead) individuals, similar to Space Marines but far larger, and with strange new organs, etc.

 

At first I was thinking... Primaris?

 

But then we get the fragmentary logs of the base commander. (Abreviated) "Project Homo Sapiens Novus... That we may follow in the footsteps of our Glorious Emperor fills me with pride... I was privileged enough to be allowed to watch as our newest Chapter, the Flame Falcons, boarded the vessels..." Then it goes wrong. The gene-seed is mutating, dark liquids running from stasis vessels, growing organic substances needing to be purged with incinerators, they get word from the Black Dragons apothecaries about their mutations, etc. "Reports are coming in daily now of spontaneous mutation in the gene seed of those we have created here. I dread to think of the consequences should the cause of these mutations be traced back to the experiments we performed here. Our sponsor in these matters, Inquisitor Cresсere, has assured me that we proceed with the Emperor's blessing... Perhaps then we will be able to discover the cause of such mutations and rectify the problem before we create more of these cursed... Crescere had the bodies incinerated before we could perform an examination of the corpses and informed me that he was relieving me as head of this facility... unsanctioned psychic signal originating from our facility...  A planet wide broadcast cut across all our communications and the viewscreen displayed a man... From his build I knew he must be a [fragment destroyed] but his armour was adorned with symbols and runes that made my eyes sting to look upon them. Over his shoulders hunched a grotesque device with obscene mechanical limbs like a spider reaching forward, each one ending in what appeared to be a bizarre weapon or torture device... The figure on viewscreen smiled, as though welcoming a long lost son and I realised at once where the unknown psychic... screams of my people as the invaders hunted them down and violated their bodies has left me shaking with a terror I cannot quell. It is clear to me now that Project Homo Sapiens Novus was doomed from the start...."

 

Was the Cursed Founding the doing of Fabius Bile? Project New Men. Are the Black Dragons a Chapter of Bile's 'Enhanced Warriors"? Perhaps this calls for a thread elsewhere...

If I'm not mistaken, some of the dwarf miniatures got leaked. Hopefully that doesn't suggest they were the most interesting part of the show

Possibly but the description - "but his armour was adorned with symbols and runes that made my eyes sting to look upon them. Over his shoulders hunched a grotesque device with obscene mechanical limbs like a spider reaching forward, each one ending in what appeared to be a bizarre weapon or torture device... " - could also be about a Haemonculus. And the person going through the reports believe that heretical Thorians are the main force behind the Cursed Founding.

That would be incredibly disappointing. Once again removing agency from the Imperium for its own mistakes. Making it the doing of Radicals is also bad for the same reason.

I see in the ~2001 Index Astartes article on 'The Codex Astartes' (where there is a sidebar for 'The Cursed Founding') it actually just says that the Flame Falcons were "driven from their homeworld" by the Grey Knights. The Chapter Approved 2004 lore then says that "It is thought that a small number of Flame Falcons escaped that day, but of their fate, nothing whatsoever is known."

 

Of course, it then gives rules for the Flame Falcons, so the obvious implication is that they escaped and rebuilt a tad (so that you can play as them).

 

But now you've stuck in my mind an idea for a new version of the Legion of the Damned - those Space Marines who have been excomunicated from the Imperium, but who wish to loyally contribute anyway. Individuals from a number of such Chapters have joined; some are litterally on fire (ex-Flame Falcons), some are psychic-warp-zombies (Fire Hawks), some are whatever-whatevers. But all know that in the sight of the Holy Emperor they have become damned. And so they repaint their armour black, and adorn it with the imagry of their inevitable future: burning in the flames of perdition, their tormented souls outside the Emperor's grace. 

 

(And of course they don't want to interact too much with the Imperium, and so appear "ghostly" as they show up and then *smoke bomb* fade away...)

Classic bolt weapon silhouettes but the backpack silhouette looks somewhat Primaris. I also see a sculpted flame. We'll see how it goes.

Yeah.

Feels like the "main" thing in the preview (AoS) is what they wanted to spend the most time on and that was the one thing that leaked.
