Ignores Cover - silly question?

A lot of Torrent weapons have ignores cover - why, when you don't roll to hit?

I feel like I'm missing something blindingly obvious!

I think the idea is that it's hard not to get wet when sprayed with a fire hose... or a tad toasty when sprayed with a flame thrower.

 

In 40k, these short ranged weapons will hit you if you get too close.

No, I mean why grant a weapon that doesn't roll to hit an ability that ignores the BS modifier for having the benefit of cover?

Because the rules haven't been changed since the Spring (10th edition) when cover reduced weapon AP instead of Hit roll.

Ah, okay. So when the codexes are updated, any weapons that had TORRENT, IGNORES COVER will lose the Ignores Cover bit due to redundancy?

Probably - as you correctly noted, it is simply a legacy issue, so it makes sense that it would be removed.  And for my recollection, I don't think any of the many torrent weapons in the new orks codex have ignores cover - for example, none of ones in the revealed orks datasheets post on Warcom do.
