Army painter fanatic extended colour triads are almost the same concept just cheaper and better bottles though?

There's a lot of people who don't want to leave the GW bubble, which is probably who this is aimed at - plus newcomers.

Having finished Ninjon's video he seems to imply that this is something very new, perhaps something that came out of the Contrast paint development when it comes to liquid pigments and the media they are suspended in. He also calls out the amazingly named Blackstone Void 5 as the best white paint on the market.

Yes, i think that's the point? (apologies if I've missed your point!)

So ultramarines blue will just be 1-5 shades of ultramarines blue, instead if macragge > calgar > fenris > or whatever.

Yes, so having both sets available simultaneously feels like the paint version of having Tactical Squads and Intercessor Squads coexist. Presumably it's temporary to delay the inevitable "you ruined my paint scheme by discontinuing my colours" bit.

Hmmm. Not sure we needed another paint range and I'm not sure what it's offering that the current one doesn't.

Am I understanding this correctly - I could buy Bloodtoof Red in any one of those 5 shades, from light to dark? 1-5?

If this is saying I can use Bloodtoof Red 1, 3 and 5 to paint red then I'm keen on that? I think?

I know it's not ground breaking, but when the names change I do struggle to remember my extra paints - macragge blue then is it calgar? alaitoc? is the highlight blue horror? fenrisian grey?

If this is 'you just need Ultramar blue - choose your shade!' then I'm kinda on board with it.

I would've loved this when I first got into this and I think it'll be great for new painters (or relatively lackluster painters like myself). Base with 5 or 4, go up one to two numbers for layering out of the recesses, highlight stages one higher at a time. Especially if paint consistency and opacity are the same throughout the range.

I'll try a few colors, but I would have to be super impressed to move away from Pro Acryl or AK, which are probably going to be cheaper

Also going to wait for folks impressions that arent in the influencer program

The shade medium definitely sounds interesting, but I think the long drying time might make me think twice about using this over the existing base colours.

If you want to try something similar, Monument Hobbies has a shade medium which is $16USD for 120ml.

Same concept, mix in whatever color you want, turns it into a wash

I think the answer as to what it offers, is the opportunity for GW to sell you an extra three pots of paint. Instead of mixing two.

And the marketing strategy implicit is present it as the 'PRO' option. 'Guaranteed' success for the learners and less confident. It's a marketing strategy.   Equally I could see it appealing to a section of the competitive gaming community as a faster way to getting a higher standard looking army to the table.

Very much this.

Off the top of my head the only YouTube painter that I expect to give an actually honest review is Vince Venturella. The rest will just be reading from their WarhammerTM sponsored cue cards.

I think it's probably nice for some people, but it's not really for me. Basically, if -like me- you already have an obscene amount of paints, there's little reason to buy this.
I guess I might buy a pot here and there, like the white paint mentioned upthread, if it really is that good - but otherwise I think I'm just not in the target group at this point in my hobby life.

I don't think we should discount the amount of people out there who don't feel comfortable mixing paints, though. It'll definitely be an easy way for many of those people to take the next step in their painting and in that sense, I can certainly see both the business case and how it might actually be a good thing for the hobby. So I'm not against it in any way (and, let's face it, it's not like you can meaningfully be "against" a paint range anyway, so...).

I am curious as to whether this will mean new/different primer sprays down the line. That might conceivably open up some interesting oportunities (business opportunities for GW if nothing else :) ).

This is the annoying feeling I have. It’s never a 1:1 replacement either. Was tempted to start an ork army but may wait til these paints come out to future proof things a bit. I’m not a great painter and use GWs existing paints so feel I’m going to be a right sucker and buy the same colours I have already.

Colour me interested.

Whilst I fully get the cynicism, the last time GW announced a new type of paint it was Contrast - which was a genuinely new way of painting and one which has since been "copied" by other brands.

Willing to give them the benefit of the doubt that this is actually a new type of paint rather than a range rebrand, and interested to see what happens next week when the world gets to have a look. And that in and of itself is a statement of confidence to me, as they're demoing this before its even on preorder.

That said, pour one out for the FLGS's that need to find room for 150 more paints somewhere as I suspect this is an "all or nothing" deal for them.

I mean this as a compliment but these are GW doing Army Painter Fanatic

My bet is these will primaris style replace the old paints. Of course they still have to do metallics.

Cynical part of me thinks this is being done in such a way as to make it harder for FLGS to stock other paint ranges esp new ones

During the stream they made quite a big deal of the paint's consistency and flow. The words "self-levelling" were used.

I'm sure there's a sales strategy angle here. They look like good paints for beginners due to the claimed flow properties. The naming conventions make it easy to understand which ones you want, and easy for a FLGS or model shop employee to sell. Much more so than the current range - how many people have got Warpstone Glow and Warp Lightning muddled? They wouldn't look out of place in anywhere that sells Gunpla kits.

They're a mainstream entry point, but if the paint quality is well received I can believe the old range's time is almost up.

Any ides what the basecoat was?

Greyseer I think. I wondered if some might have been Mechanicus Standard Grey but that may just be the lighting playing havoc.

Still don’t understand why they haven’t released a wet palette tbh, I’d be surprised if almost everyone who sticks with the hobby ends up using one.

That's one thing I don't anticipate them ever releasing. There's no way shareholders are going to agree to releasing a product that directly reduces the frequency of purchasing other products.
