Didn't see that coming.

You play as a group of bounty-hunting Venators taking on jobs set by the Arbitrator, the equivalent of a games master, who presents the story to the other players, adjudicating on the rules of the game, and unfolding the narrative created by the actions of the players. It’s compatible with the full range of Necromunda miniatures, and comes with some fantastic and characterful new models, starting with those representing your team – these four Iconic Characters.

These player characters are an Escher Assassin, Orlock Gunslinger, Squat Fixer, and Goliath Champion. They each have rules in the box to get you started quickly, and they all have alternate builds if you want to craft your own Venators.

You’ll encounter a variety of interesting personalities in your journeys, and some of those in the two included adventures can be nicely represented by the five Adversary miniatures in the box – a Scabber, a Saboteur, a Hive Preacher, a Cadaver Merchant, and a Heretek with a servo-skull.*

I love this idea, and it puts Necromunda: Skirmish into context. Would have been good if they had at least mentioned it when they announced the new Necromunda. Looking forward to Cawdor and Delaque!

I am weirdly tempted by this. I was never that interested in necromunda the game, while acknowledging it has some of the best 40k sculpts around. I actually bits ordered 1 ganger from each faction a few years ago as a painting project, and guess what I never finished it. This could be the perfect home for those models.

Gaming wise this looks a bit like Inq28, on the design throughline that was apparently inspired by 'gunfight at the ok corrall' scenario games from the 70s.

Potentially one of the most interesting things GW has done in a long time.

I mean I don't personally care for TTRPGs so it's not for me, but GW being willing to do this as an in-house product with mini support (rather than outsourcing to Cubicle 7 or Fantasy Flight as they have in the past) feels like a bold move.

I hope they will allow me to live out my Necromunda fantasy of playing as a Tusken Raider Ash Waste Nomad.

Seems it has rules for playing the 6 original gangs, hive scum, and squats. If this goes well I can definitely see splat books with new classes/backgrounds etc.

I'm not a TTRPG guy, but this looks really neat. I loved the original hive scum kit, and this looks like they took the original kit and expanded it for the henchmen. All of the NPC minis are also great, I'd love to add the Heretek to my LatD and the preacher to my SoB. If I had the shelf space, a second squad of Sanctifiers with that guy and some underhive zealots would be a fun project

Wow! This came out of nowhere, didn't it

I've been saying for years that I love the many, many Necromunda books in principle and think it'd be great for an RPG setting but that it's just way too OTT for a skirmish game. So I guess I would be a hypocrite if I didn't at least give this a shot. I could see it being great as either a "proper" roleplaying game or as basically a more (old school) "WHQ Necromunda"-type game. It might also suck, but we shall see.

In any case, Necromunda is the perfect setting for something like this and if it does well, one might conceivably hope for something similar for the other settings - probably pie in the sky, but it would be cool, wouldn't it? I think RPGs with minis (and other accessories) might both be a good way to sell stuff and a great way to flesh out the different settings a bit more; I've always found that the games like Underworlds, Warcry, Kill Team etc. were great when they kinda showed us some aspects of the settings that weren't just "big battlefield with big armies" but were more "slice of life" (even if it was obviously always a slice of life filled with fighting and killing stuff). It really helps make the settings feel more real and "lived in", so I hope they'll do more of these down the road.

The models are pretty much all great. I found myself thinking that the adversaries seemed lke much more interesting player characters than the cool but somewhat generic "regular gang champion" PCs, so I'm interested to see what the options are once it comes out. If nothing else, it should be easy to just write some rules up for non-house affiliated PCs.

What I really like is that this is a converters heaven if the rules are flexible enough to allow you to create completely custom models beyond the archetypes shown. Venators have always been my favourite faction in Necromunda for this reason.

I think the other positive is that this could potentially go beyond Necromunda and you could set your games on any world in the Imperium with the GM coming up with rules for Xenos such as Eldar pirates or even big boss Ambulls, you could even go full on Firefly and represent a crew of a small ship.

This has a lot of potential if the rules work.

100%, this. The original Warcry teams of realm-specific chaos cultists, or the 2nd edition focus around faction scouts/monster hunters were a great look at a subset of those armies. The Kill Team releases that aren't updates to old kits but exploring background units (Arbites, Chaos Beastmen, Breachers, Sanctifiers) were the best stuff Kill Team has done. The power armor focus of the last year are incredibly frustrating, despite the cool kits that came out.

Does anyone else feel that the Player minis are the weakest in the box? Maybe it's because I'm not a fan of either of those four factions, but none of them standout compared to the minis already available to each faction.

Definitely slot in nicely with cultists.

I can’t tell if the adversaries are one to one remakes of the resin versions or not. Especially the scanner, does anyone know?

in any case this is almost a sure buy depending on the book tax

The scabber, heretek, and cadaver merchant are definitely closest to their resin originals. The merchant is basically mirrored, and the scabber looks to the right instead of the left.

These are the resin ones. If the plastic ones are in I haven't found them yet

@Laurence - what’s wrong with pointing out there used to be an rpg based on necromunda?!

the receipt - https://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Confrontation_(game)

If memory serves I think Confrontation is actually the prototype Necromunda '95*.

* - I'm sure it was 1995 that it came out but could be out by a year or so. Confrontation rules were about 2-3 years earlier?

Ah good, my memory hadn't failed; yes, Confrontation was no more an RPG than Rogue Trader was.  It had more detail than a skirmish game nowadays may do, but it was still about gangs shooting each other in combat scenarios, not shaking down contacts to gather clues and find a mark.

This thing looks like Inquisitor, but given that it's possible to play with mats, I'm guessing there'll be no 3d aspect to the combat rules, so none of that 'drawing true line of sight' stuff.
