Gene seed lore question

Listening to the books it describes a lot of Space Marines being hit by munitions that basically evaporate them. When this happens they lose a gene seed. Do they have a bank of gene seed they aren’t using because of the codex chapter limits? Do they have a way of making more? Or are we slowly moving towards a day where we’ve run out of gene seeds?

They usually have a decent supply of geneseed. The problem becomes an issue when you lose your base of operations.

There are all sorts of stories of Space Marine Chapters that were dying off because they lost too many marines to attrition and their geneseed supplies were too few (like the Blood Ravens).

The Primaris / Greyshield resupply from the Torchbearer fleets fixed a lot of problems for Chapters that were barely hanging on due to misfortune, wars, or traitorous Iron Hands attacking them.*

*The thieving Iron Hands Chapter attacked the loyalist chapter of the Hospitallers and blew up their flagship, to cover the theft of a Dreadnought... that they didn't even need.

Every Marine generates/grows two gene-seed. One is easily accessible, and is removed at the earliest possible point, allowing to maintain numbers. The second is located is a precarious position, and is usually removed upon death. The second one allows them tool replace lost gene-seed and pay Mar's gene-tithe.

Don't forget they can produce mode by seeding it into "volunteers" and later harvest twice(Volunteers obviously die during procedure)

To give a little more specifics, the Geneseed itself is the Progenoid Glands. one is located in the neck and is harvested after about 5 years of the marine making the full genetic transformation, the second gland resides in the chest cavity and is usually only harvested after death. However, gene seed farming can occur in two ways, once the marine has his full developed progenoid removed from his neck, a new seed can be placed in its place and thus "Farmed". This is likely what low strength chapters do to slowly rebuild, because while there are geneseed vaults on mars, chapters outside of the 1st and 2nd foundings would struggle to get mars to give any up outside a new founding.

But aspirants being used to farm it is also a possibility but as mentioned it burns through potential aspirants as they are not fully developed marines and cannot survive multiple implantations. If you have a wealth of aspirants then go for it, but its not likely the way they do it.

The Imperial Fists have mastered the art of gene-seed farming and it is why they can take such heavy losses and rebound so quickly. They likely learned this accelerated process during the seige of Cthonia given how they were mass producing marines their and kept the process a "trade secret."

During/after the heresy, loyalists of traitors legions likely had their progenoids harvested and destroyed and were likely implanted with new ones. They them selves would still keep the attributes of their former legions but the new progenoid glands would develop differently. This is possibly what lead to geneseed degenration or chimeric geneseeds. This is why i dont like the idea of "loyal traitors" because even if they were allowed to continue in their service, their geneseed absolutely would have been harvested and destroyed, likely even making them go through the dangerous process of removing the chest one. There is NO WAY right after the heresy the imperium/loyalists would just let traitor/loyalist keep their gene-seed. just my humble opinion.

I have never heard of this before. Where would a spare progenoid gland come from?

I have never heard of Chapters doing this. However when a new Chapter is founded, the normal process is for the AdMech to identify a single prime geneseed specimen from their tithes to found the Chapter. The geneseed is then implanted into a mindwiped or cloned body and allowed to mature for 10 years. The 2 Progenoids are then extracted and the process repeated. Because each generation doubles, a healthy set of 1000 implants can be cultured in under a century.

All of this is Firstborn lore and I am pretty sure Primaris Marines can be produced faster. Some Chapters also have faster growth rates. For example, Blood Angels reach physical maturity in just 1 year but that year is spent unconscious in a sarcophagus. During the Horus Heresy, Corax developed a method of turning recruits into fully fledged Marines in a matter of weeks using knowledge and technology imparted by the Emperor. However the Alpha Legion tampered with it causing the recruits to degenerate into mutated beasts that Corax eventually euthanised at the end of the Heresy. The Alpha Legion took a copy of the technology before they corrupted it and handed it over the Fabius Bile. It is possible that the process Belesarius Cawl uses to rapidly grow Primaris marines is based on the same principles as Corax's Raptor program but this is just fan speculation.

once you remove the neck progenoid, you would re-implant an immature progenoid into the marine and re-harvest it once it matures. it doesnt "increase your number of progenoids, it increase the number of mature glands, you would have to have a basic net supply. there also has to be a way for chapters to create new genseed like the mechanicus, otherwise eventually all chapters would die by attrition. there is simply no way that logistically the vaults of mars are re-supplying all of the chapters with geneseed unless there is a process to mass produce in someway like the fists did on Cthonia etc..

The Slave/serf host lore comes from several sources One I know and a few from AI below. The original slave/serf harvesting lore started with the baseline information in the 1989 Compendium and to my knowledge is still canon. – A paraphrase of it because I don’t have it digitally and don’t want to type two pages…lol : When the Adeptus Mechanicus needs to manufacture enough gene-seed to engineer a brand-new Chapter, they cannot simply rely on natural Space Marine as a host and their lifecycles so they select a single healthy zygote and grow it in a lab culture. That culture is then implanted into a human test-slave. Typically, criminals or serfs without mutations. The slave is awake and conscious but totally paralyzed and serve as a meat popsicle incubator. One slave's body then yields two progenoids. When they are extracted, the slave dies. The progenoid is then cultured, and then they are forced into two more slaves, yielding four, and so on and so on. Roughly taking about 50 years to get to 1000 progenoids for a new chapter. So based on this there absolutely is a way to “create” immature geneseed cultures.

The following information was gathered using AI so I can confirm its accuracy, I have the Ultramarine Omnibus and three of theVaults of Mars books in my audible cue but haven’t listened to them yet, (Took a break from 40k books to listen to Brandon Sandersons Stormlight series but almost done it.) but I will be acquiring the other three now that I know what they cover, so again take with a grain of salt:::::: The Vaults of Mars & The Mechanicus Novellas: In books focusing on the Tech-Priests—such as the Adeptus Mechanicus series by Rob Sanders—we see the cold, unfeeling logistics of the Magos Biologis. They treat human flesh as nothing more than circuitry or chemical vats. The vaults where the Chapter tithes are kept are described as sprawling, sterile complexes heavily guarded by Servitors and automated defense grids.Graham McNeill’s

Ultramarines: In the Ultramarines Omnibus, particularly around the storylines involving Honsou and the Iron Warriors (like Dead Sky, Black Sun), the concept of industrializing Space Marine creation is flipped into its most extreme, chaotic nightmare version: the Daemonculaba. This was a corrupted, dark mirror of the Mechanicus’ test-slave method, using mutated human women as living factories to forcefully birth fully-grown Chaos Space Marines.The Dawn of Fire & Dark Imperium Series: The lore surrounding Belisarius Cawl and the creation of the Primaris Marines brings the mass-production labs back to the forefront. Cawl spent ten millennia in subterranean automated facilities expanding, tweaking, and mass-culturing gene-seed from all twenty original Primarch lines to launch the Ultima Founding, showcasing the pinnacle of Mechanicus bio-technological production.

To give a little more specifics, the Geneseed itself is the Progenoid Glands...

Per Index Astartes Volume I (2002), the Progenoid Glands are not the gene-seed; they contain the gene-seed used to clone the nineteen* organs used in the creation of a Space Marine. "There are nineteen varieties of gene-seed corresponding to the nineteen different superhuman organs that are surgically implanted into a Space Marine."

The gene-seed is used to create a suite of nineteen organs, which are then implanted into an Initiate. The 18th implant is the two Progenoid Glands, which collect the genetic material of the implanted organs, and which are then extracted. "When mature, each gland contains a single gene-seed corresponding to each zygote implanted into the recipient Marine. Once removed by surgery, the progenoid must be carefully prepared, its individual gene-seeds checked for mutation, and sound gene-seeds stored."

The article uses the term gene-seed both as a collective grouping, and in regards to those of specific organs. "For example, the omophagea gene-seed of the Blood Drinkers has mutated so that all Blood Drinkers have an unnatural craving for blood." "The extinction of a Phase 18 or 19 gene-seed would effectively mean an end to a Chapter."

//

The same source does mention "farming" by the Adeptus Mechanicus, when founding a new Chapter:

"A single suitable gene-seed must be selected for each zygote. Zygotes are then grown in culture and implanted into human test-slaves. These test-slaves must be biologically compatible and free from mutation. Test-slaves spend their entire lives bound in static experimental capsules. Although conscious, they are completely immobile, serving as little more than mediums within which the various zygotes can develop. From the original slave come two progenoids, which are implanted within two more slaves, from which come four progenoids and so on. It takes about 55 years of constant reproduction to produce 1,000 healthy sets of organs. These must be officially sanctioned by the Master of Adeptus Mechanicus and then by the High Lords of Terra speaking for the Emperor. Only the Emperor can give permission for the creation of a new Chapter."

Presumably a Chapter could also technically do this itself, though I don't imagine that they would be allowed to by the Adeptus Mechanicus and the Emperor (High Lords of Terra).

//

Also perhaps worth mentioning that the gene-seed itself is but one component in the creation of a Space Marine. Chemical treatments and hypnotherapy are also required. (For example the Catalepsean Node and Occulobe, if merely implanted into a random subject, would not inherently do anything by themselves.)

//

*Many Chapters had less, due to mutation/genetic failure (in fact, the article says that "very few" Chapters actually possess all nineteen implants); and I assume that Primaris Marines now can have more than nineteen.

Exactly, and we don’t even know the process for making the thunder warriors and while unstable, they had zero geneseed and were far more powerful than marines. The techno barbarian age left a lot of gene manipulation lost to the imperium. In theory, the thunder warriors could also be recreated and mass produced and used in the worst battlefields. And they were likely far easier to produce than marines.

So the lost technologies on gene editing, chemical enhancements etc there are dozens of different ways super soldiers of marine caliber could be made. Fabius Biles new men are another example and they can be either gender.  But for the geneseed/progenoid harvesting, in theory it could be mass produced. It would just take a lot of resources and knowledge to do it.
