So, there is this Instagram fella, who makes 30k sculpts of models, that pay homage to the 90s style miniatures. His tagline, on his account, is "Creating the Siege of Terra in the 90s aesthetic', under the name 'Oldhammer 30k'.

I have a VERY soft spot for 90s models, especially metal ones. If that wasn't evident by my recent activity during the 'Call to Arms 2026, let it be known that I love to lick brushes and file down white metal miniatures under fluorescent lights.

Recently, I was made aware of a project he started, which was to cast his sculpts in white metal, specifically his PRIMARCH models, and selling them. The endeavour started with the first three, Lion El'Johnson, Sanguinius and Roboute Guilliman. I was lucky enough to get my hands on all three and once Abaddon is finished, I'll start on these (along with other projects, oh god, why do I keep doing this to myself?). As I understand it, his intentions are to cast all 18, with next two in line being Perturabo and Rogal Dorn.

The quality of the casts is amazing. I was not expecting to see this: no mould lines, no miscasts, nothing. A thousand times better than the best GW metal miniature I've ever seen. The aesthetic is brilliant. If I saw these inside an A or a D blister, it wouldn't feel out of place.

Feast your eyes on this old school goodness:

I understand that this is going to be a side project, so I might not have the time needed to work on it frequently. However, because I know I'm like that possum that found his way into the pastry shop and ate so much that it couldn't move, let alone fit through the hole that came in, I know that I'm going to start working on these as soon as I possibly can. :woot:

Thanks guys, I really mean it!

Well, I'll better get on with it then!

I'll try to finish Abaddon tonight and start contemplating what kind of bases, or maybe plinths, I'll give these guys. I really wish that Oldhammer30k would make the full 18 primarchs, as I would LOVE to collect and paint all of them.

Hello! It's me, Oldhammer30k. I registered to follow along with this project and to answer any questions anyone has.

First off, I have made most of the Primarchs digitally, just Khan really that needs finishing now.

I am preparing 3 more for metal casting (Russ, Dorn and Perturabo) and do plan on doing a casting run on all 18 eventually.

I also plan to make my own versions of the Emperor and Horus akin Mike McVey's famous diorama. And Daemon and non Daemon versions of the big 4 (Magnus, Mortarion, Angron and Fulgrim).

They're great. Man... I really shouldn't have seen this.

The spirit of Oldhammer is definitely here. I have to confess that after just looking at the minis, I thought to myself "well, that's odd - I've never seen these." Now I know why. The creator has excellent taste and the necessary skills to capture the 90s vibes.

I'm sure they'll be a blast to paint and I know that they're in competent hands. Have fun and keep us posted.

So, I've started doing some work on these. I've cleaned any miniscule mould lines, used some milliput to close some tiny gaps and holes from the moulding process, washed the models to get rid of any release agents, and mounted Sanguinius and his wings on corks, and started working on him.

I've also made all three bases (although I don't really like the Lion's base, so I might re-do it) and finished the one that Roboute will be standing on, one with marble effect and an Imperial Aquilla. That one was the first marble effect I've tried. I did it using an old wet wipe and airbrush, the painted it, and then covered the whole base in UV resin. I cured it with a UV pen, then let it on the window sill to cure in the sun. Then sanded it down with progressively finer sandpaper and painted over two hands of very diluted gloss varnish:

I still need to clear the rim and maybe fix that little black slice that showed up as I was sanding it down. Or I might add a piece of etched brass on that corner, to make the base a bit more interesting? Or do it again from scratch, too many emotions now.

I did a bit of basic work on Sanguinius' body as well.

Basic colours, no wash:

Initial washes and left side of armour first highlight:

Second highlight finished on armour:

Now I need to learn how to do freehand robe trim

PS: Excuse my unmanicured fingers, the weather in Scotland got really cold, really fast, and my hands don't handle the weather well.

Thank you people

Last night I managed to do a little bit more work and, I think, I'm done with the breastplate. I did some work on the face too, but I'll revisit at a later point:

Nice progress, thanks for sharing. The metallics are top-notch and the face is off to a good start. I'm ceaselessly impressed with how good this sculpt is. The face - it's absolutely dreadful and uncanilly evocative of the old style/aesthetic - like something taken from an alternate universe where these sculpts were released by GW.

The one thing I don't appreciate is you doing a marble base :P That's something I wanted to try, too. And now it'll look like I'm cribbing from you. Then again, I don't think I'll be able to do it this well. I love how subtle the effect is and how realistic it looks. Kudos.

Ahahhaha, thanks @Brother Christopher! Your post gave me a smile! The face does look old-school 90s style, doesn't it!?

No worries at all, about the base. Go for it! It was my first attempt, ever, and if you're interested in the 'recipe' I used, I did it using airbrush and stretched a dried out wet wipe over the base, to create the marbling effect. It took about 5 to 6 passes, starting from black, then spraying with a neutral grey (I think I used the old Air Administratum Grey) then progressively adding more white in the airbrush pot mix, to make it look whiter. I also changed the orientation of the wipe, every couple of passes, so it would look more natural and random.

When the whole thing dried, I used a very fine brush to trace small amounts of gold veins. And that was it!

It sure does! Once again, if I had the patience to work on older minis, I'd love to have these. You've made and absolutely great purchase.

Thank you for the in-depth description. Regrettably, I don't have an airbrush. And my attempts to use the wipe method without the said airbrush didn't yield any satisfying results. I'll just have to improvise.

@Brother Christopher Have you considered using a beat up brush, and stippling the paint on? I used various greys and browns, washed with sepia, with the paint stippled on with a beat up old brush....then just painted in cracks.

It isn't quite as good as the airbrush technique...but it conveys the right idea.
