the Plutonians shared their belief that the controlled usage of daemonic possessed forces could be wielded back against Daemons. https://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Plutonian

Nothing original here.

"Among the most heretical interpretations were parallels made with the insidious belief in the Star Child, promulgated by a cult which had been destroyed some years before the Great Rift opened." The Illuminati is not specifically named as this particular cult. https://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Illuminati

Hearing others make the claim in contrast that it was in fact the Illuminati which was destroyed. I fail to recall the sources saying such now, but sounds like not only is this not confirmed, but left open ended potientially on purpose (at least at the time.) I also fail to beleive a secret organization with the goal of a new world order having lasted for tens of millenia is going to be snuffed out once and for all and we're to take that as a fact from the Inquisition. I'm sure it's just a convenient piece of propaganda by their rivals within it.

I just wanted to see if anyone held any first had knowledge on the shift in the lore from Illuminati and Knights of the Long Watch, to Plutonians and Exorcists.

Not sure how the Star Child stuff exactly relates to the Plutonians. If the Sensei/Illuminati relate to any of the Inquisition sects, it's the Thorians and their involvement with the Cursed Founding.

As regards publications, I cannot really think of works mentioning Illuminati and Sensei, except for the original Realms of Chaos books and Ian Watson's Inquisition War trilogy from the early 1990's (reprinted a few times by Black Library).

That trilogy features a character named Zephro Carnelian, a member of Illuminati who has dealings with Ordo Hydra of the Inquisition and with Eldar (Ulthwé craftworld as well as harlequins). It was an Eldar that banished the daemon that possessed him, and afterwards he ended up building connections with the Eldar (and trying to dress up like Harlequin). Inquisitor Jaq Draco and his companions meet him in multitude of locations, including a space hulk adrift in warp, a Slaanesh-dominated planet in the Eye of Terror, aboard Ulthwé craftworld as well as on a few Imperial planets (they get around a bit in that trilogy). At some parts the books hint that the Eldar might be actually trying to use the Illuminati to further their own ends.

As for the Inquisiton, it is a secretive and scittzophrenic organisation, whose members often try to keep others confused about what they are doing. They are good at exposing conspiracies, but also equally good in starting new ones.

As for the idea of deliberately summoning daemons to possess people, and then banishing them., well ... is there anything that could possibly go wrong in the process?

It either kills or drives insane a lot of the Exorcists’ initiates, and that’s just the ones they don’t have to keep locked up.

Which tends to be quite a normal outcome for many space marine chapters initiation rites. At least for the less hardcore ones.

As for the basement full of daemonhosts, the chapter can probably trade them with radical inquisitors for something else. Like better materials for the banishment rituals.

I must admit to not having read the said WD article, but I happened to take a glance at the Codex Grey Knights (2010), which mentions that the Exorcists willingly provide some of their initiate candidates to the Grey Knights. Considering the rather high loss rate for GK initiates, it is not clear how many of those provided by the Exorcists have actually ever made it through the initiation rites.

That said, considering the possibly fate of Exorcist initiates, I am not sure which one is the worse fate for the candidates: to be taken in by the Exorcists, or to be transferred over to the Grey Knights.

Illuminati who are opposed by the Ordo Malleus were a secret radical ressurectionist society, their theory on ressurection paralells with the beliefs of the star child cult.

The Illuminati disappear (thought to be destroyed) and the Plutonians appear.

The Plutonians are a secret radical sect within the Ordo Malleus who formalised controlled possession followed by self-exorcism as the initiation for the Exorcists chapter.

As for the Thorians they are too mainstream within the Inquisition to be associated and promote daemon hunting, not possession.

On the Illuminati's same practice: In most cases, a daemonhost does not survive possession - the victim is eventually driven insane, or the mind is driven out of the host body so that the daemon takes complete control of it. A daemon can exist indefinitely within a host, with the possessed host often continuing their mortal life. Sometimes a strong-willed host can put up some resistance and preserve their self within a tenuous corner of the possessed brain. The host mind survives as a mere helpless witness as the daemon uses the mortal body to wreak its terrible acts. In a few instances, however, an individual has managed to cast the daemon from their body. https://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Illuminati

Now if we get into the origins of the Exorcists whose lineage seems to be in question we might consider that they are also psykers and resistant to chaos.

Perhaps the gene-seed origin is just a cover up to avoid the Ordp Malleus, and these initiates are really the sons of E (a.k.a Sensei) who also were either psykers, uncorruptable or blank.

The Sensei now have a chapter in which they hide in plain sight working towards the ulterier goal of the Plutonians *cough* Illuminati .

And perhaps that is also why they might be recruited by the GK being able to fit right in as step bros, but I haven't considered that too much.

Wouldn't the Sensei be a bit on the old side to be good candidates for space marines - the gene-seed implantation being intended to work on subjects in their early teens or so.

Nope. Not if the Sensei are perpetuals that don't age and regenerate.

As for the original Long Watch of the Sensei, according to the original Realms of Chaos book this was just a ruse by the Illuminati to keep the Sensei organised and busy until the time they would be needed for the Illuminati "resurrectionist conspiracy" where they would be sacrificed to somehow reinforce the Emperor - or at least that is what the Illuminati expected would happen.

Yes and just think how much more energy keeping the secret from the inquisition while they themselves keep secret, and while hoping the sensei don't pick up on anything for untold ages and just be satisfied with standing by their posts with a wide grin on their face. The sensei had to be real guilible I imagine. Those psykic powers or hightened abilities from just being one of E's did not apply to intuition and baloney I guess.
