Chapter of the Cave Bear

The Mass of fur, Claws and Teeth came down on him again.

He reached for the first weapon he could find, he felt a rock, grabbed it and with all his Genetically Engineered strength he swung it round at a blistering speed and smashed the Bear in the side of its head. The blow was enough to smash the side of the Bears head and crush its skull into its brain.

Dargon looked down at the dead giant bear, blood flowing freely down his unarmoured chest, and the future of his newly founded chapter flashed before his eyes.

Chapter History

When the High lords of Terra deamed it time for another founding of Space Marine chapters, they decreed that no less than 10 more Chapters would be created. This founding became known as the 18th Founding.

When it was checked it was discovered that there were still huge stocks of Ultramarine and Ulramarine successor Genes, so these were chosen to be founders of the new chapters.

A company from 10 of the Chapters including, Sons of Ulramar and theHeralds of Ultramar were chosen to be the founders of the new chapters.

From the Heralds of Ultramar the Forth Company was chosen and Captain Dargon was made the new Chapter Master. These 100 marines went in search of a new homeworld where they could build their Chapter and recruit their new battle brothers, and so the feral world of Gyer was made their home.

Home World

Gyer was colonised during the Dark age of Technology not long before the Age of Strife. This much is known only through the Chronicals, Cave drawings found in deep caves still held up by Plasteel supports put into place by the first colonists.

As to what happened after the first colonisation is unknown or at least conjecture, but suffice to say the population reverted to the most primative technology that man has had, Hunter/Gatherer, Basic stone tools, Spears.

As for the world itself it is much the same as earth was during its stone age, Ice shelves cover a large portion of the planets surface and the population live on the steppes along the equator.

The Human population is however smaller than the animal population, which includes Wolves, Mamoths, Sabertooth Lions, Deer and ,of cause, Bears.

The Heralds of Ultramar had been using the wprld as a recruiting world for many years as the world is found just outside the northern borders of Ultramar. Fortunately for the people living on Gyer no Tyrannid Fleet has ever reached this lovely world, if it had it wouldnt be here today.

Founding

The company arrived on Gyer and chose a site for their fortress. In a Sparsely populated area of the Steppes, surrounded by abanded caves sites, it was decided that these cave sites would become part of the fortress.

It was while he was exploring the area that Dorgan first encountered the Giant Bear. He was facinated by the cave drawings and entered a cave which was the den of a bear, it attacked, the space Marine, even though he was not wearing his power armour, won. He presented the bears corpse to his Battle brothers and declared that he knew how the chapter would look, and so on that day the Chapter of the Cave Bear was born.

The Chapter organisation

Gyers resident human population had a healthy fear of the giant Cave bears and even worshipped them as a weapon of the sky Chief who chose the worthy and killed the unworthy, so as the chapter started Recruiting the youngsters of the Clans people, they began to revere the Space Marines as the soldiers of the Sky Chief.

As these new comers came to be battle brother so they brought their own ingrained belefs, eventually after 300 or so years these belefs became part of the chapters belefs and indeed changed the chapters structure.

The Chapter Master became known as the Chapter Chief and gained the Honourific surname of Great Bear.

The Chaplains remained mostly the same apart from they took on the role of Apothecary as well and became known as Shamen-Chaplains.

The Librarians also changed little but over time became known as Seer's.

Terminator Armour is deemed to be a priceless relic and is only given to Chiefs, Shamen-Chaplains, Seer's and Squad leaders, the Chapters Veterans. This means that the Chapter has no Terminator squads.

There are also very few Dreadnoughts, so there will only ever be one fielded in a battle.

Tactical squads are 9 marines armed with Bolters and Chain Swords, with a smatering of power weapons/Lightning claws. They are led by a Veteran Warrior in Tactical Dreadnought armour.

The Chapter has become very suspisions of certain items of technology like the Jump Pack so Battle brothers sometimes get fielded in bike squadrons, which are accompanied by attack bikes.

The Chapter has very few heavy weapons so relies heavily on Tanks, Predators mainly. But sometimes smaller squads will be fielded in Razorbacks

Rhinos are always to be found on the field of battle getting Marines to the enemy quicker.

The Chapters Techmarines have not been swept away in the belefs of the chapter and on large remain the same as the rest of the codex chapters. But they do take pride in teaching their Tech-lore to the Veterans of the Chapter, so anyone who is wearing TDA can also repair it and assist the Techmarines in repairing and Building new equipment, to show that they have recieved this training they are awarded a Thunder Hammer which they can carry into battle.

This is my first attempt at a chapter history and hope it is fluffy enough. As for the chapters battle honours i will tell you them as soon as they have some.

The rules for this Army are basically the same as Space Wovles apart from the fact that there are no Blood Claws or wolf guard or Leman Russ's. Some of the Wargear is the same, but I will go in to this in more detail when I have Experimented a bit more.

Your Opinions on this new Chapter would be Welcome.

Honour the Cave Bear, He has the soul of the Emperor.

this is just my opinion but i think you should allow terminator squads in the bear army, just the prospect of giant bear skin covered behemoths, also you could convewrt the lightning claws to look like giant bear claws

A chapter wouldnt send 100 of their men away, thats 10% of the chapter gone, most of the time they send around 10 men (rough guess, maybe a few more). Something that would be cool would be they were trained by a honour guard made of one member from numerous Ultramarine Successors. This would make for good fluff.

As for the world itself it is much the same as earth was during its stone age

They dont know much about the worlds history, so probably wouldnt know what the earth's stone age was like. For us its a good marker, but if this is meant to be from the 40k view point, then it wont work.

The Human population is however smaller than the animal population, which includes Wolves, Mamoths, Sabertooth Lions, Deer and ,of cause, Bears.
How about making some more alien animals which are similar to the these animals. Unless they were taken by the settlers, then its a very small chance they would evolve naturally, identical.

This means that the Chapter has no Terminator squads.

Why? Nothing screams Bear more than Terminators with Lightining Claws, covered in furs.... = Bear

They are led by a Veteran Warrior in Tactical Dreadnought armour.
I would send these men to form Bear Packs...Assualt Terminator Squads

The Chapter has become very suspisions of certain items of technology like the Jump Pack so Battle brothers sometimes get fielded in bike squadrons, which are accompanied by attack bikes.

These seems to be 2 points. I would expand on why they dont like Assualt Packs, is it something to do with flying? Then go onto explain why they like bikes

Thats about it besides a couple of errors in spelling and typos

My intention with the Chapter is to show that they are a relatively new chapter and that the Chapters commanders have decided that Termy armour is too rare a commodity and so only veteran leaders can wear it at the moment, until the Chapters forges have built more. A slow and thorough process that can take up to a year per TDA, what with a the preyers , offerings and wards against eveil that the Techmarines have to perform while under construction.

Once built it has to be tested, more preyers and offerings and only if it passes the Omnissahs blessings does it pass onto the Shaman-chaplains who must then offer preyers and offerings to the Spirit of the Cave Bear.

In one of the Shaman-chaplains vision quests he will be granted a visit from the Cave Bear spirit who will let the Shaman-chaplain know that the TDA has his approval.

The intended wearer is then sent out to kill his own bear for its pelt, he preys for a whole night over the dead bear while he strips if of it coat, he then has to eat it's meat, finally taking a bite out of it's heart before throwing it on the fire to prevent anything else stealing the bears spirit. He then drapes the fur over his new armour, all the time preying to the Cave Bear and the Emperor. If all this is not done correctly, then the armour is returned to the Techmarines who dismantle it and start again.

This is the reason why it is taking so long to get TDA out to the companies.

Ahhh....Heathens!!!

Sounds good, maybe look into a Deathwatch killteam armed with lightning claws to act as a really cool looking unti.

My intention with the Chapter is to show that they are a relatively new

Well, the 18th founding was quite a while ago, so if you want them to be new, make them 24-26th founding

Well once the chapter has had its initial allotment, where does it get the rest?

I was under the Impression that each chapter would start making its own. Is'nt that why the Dark Angels are able to field an entire Company of Termies.
