Frost Hands Command Squad WIP

Recommended Posts

Sadly I don't have much to show for the last several months as school and my thesis have taken over my life, but I did manage to get a few figures painted up. This is the command squad for my Frost Hands marines as it stands right now. I've tried really hard to convert all of the models to be in older Mk. armor of some sort. In some cases they're mixed and matched, but I'm liking the overall effect so far.

Comments and criticisms always appreciated, especially about the commander as there's still plenty of work left to do on him.

I like the blue parts but could the white be any thicker....

the painted silver isnt all that bad but drybrushing will give a somewhat more realistic effect but feel free to continue the metal your doing now.

Nice colour scheme there mate, they should really stand out on the tabletop ^_^ . The models look good, but I do worry about the one with the sawn off nose, because that is what it looks like from here. ^_^

I would consider thinning your paints somewhat, as they look like they have been applied a little thickly in places, but hey, decent photography shows all the little flaws! ;)

Looking forward to seeing the last guy painted, it is hard to get a good look at the conversion with the dark colour.

As has been said, the paint looks a little thick in places, particularly the white. The big problem with white is that you can't highlight it. ^_^: ^_^ You could take a look at some of the scattered tutorials and links to tutorials that are all over this site (searchy might help there) about painting white. Several Concerned Cricketers has some tutorials that produce good results for white. Give them a look if you like.

Besides that, the only things I could suggest are some highlights to the metal sections and perhaps some brighter highlights to the blue on the most extreme edges of the models.

Post them when they're finished, nice job so far.

General replies first:

Yeah, the white does look kind of thick this way. When you're not looking at them so closely, it's not nearly as bad. Part of the problem is that I'm working up from a black undercoat, so it's basically impossible to get a good, clean white without a lot of layers. I haven't perfected the ability to think paint and get decent coverage at the same time.

@howxat: These figures are a mixture of modified pre-Heresy armor models bitz ordered from GW (the Mk. V model with a melta and the two Mk. 2 figs with hammers are all mostly the original GW models), models that are combinations of multiple models (the apothecary has a Mk. 5 torso combined with legs from the Iron Hands boxed set. The power fist model has the legs from the aforementioned Mk. 5 model and the upper half of a Warsmith). Other models are converted from plastic bits with a good bit of green stuff (the Mk. 3 torso and head on the commander were both converted and the Mk. 4 head, torso and legs on the first melta marine were all converted). It looks like a lot of pre-Heresy bits are being put out now, so making a pre-Heresy army is a lot easier than it use to be. However, it is entirely possible to make those models yourself. Just find good examples to work off of and give it a go.

As a massive fan of pre-heresy stuff, I have to say your work is stunning. Also: thank you so much for FINALLY providing me with a clear pic of the MK5 helmet, Ive been looking for one to base my conversions on for AGES but all I could find were blurry, poorly painted shots from forces that must have been done in the 90's or tiny little shots of the models in bare metal

Thread bookmarked, cant wait to see more.

@Yodhrin: Since I don't have pictures of the unpainted Mk. 5 models, I'll do my best to describe the process that I went through to make them. The helmet was built from a Mk. 6 helmet where I chopped off the end of the beak, added green stuff to the front to make it flush with the upper part of the helmet and to all me to put the vents on the front. I also added the small crest on the top. The torso was made from the pseudo-Mk. 5 chest plate from the plastic box. I scraped down the middle and added the two plates on the chest and groin with green stuff. The legs were normal knee cap plastic legs that had the kneecaps cut down to make the hexagonal Mk. 5 knees. Not too difficult. Most of the work is in making it look clean.
