Sons of Apollo

Hi all, I tend to browse through here quite a bit but rarely post. Thought I'd get some feedback on my current WIP army the Sons of Apollo. They are inspired by the Sons of Sparta and other ancient greek images I could find:

I'm currently working on the Venerable Dreadnought which has a custom sarcophogus similar to the Forgeworld ones.

Your fleshtones could use a lot of work; a fine tanned face would stand out more from the sargeant's armour and give him a very heroic look.

I'd start with Tanned Flesh, heavy drybrush of Dwarf Flesh, and LIGHT highlights with Elf...

But that's just me. His face looks like an extention of his armour, which detracts from the entire figurine to me.

The rest of it I love, though! The sergeant is the only thing that makes me go, "Ehhh..." and makes me reluctant to give a full thumbs up...

As it is, have a thumb and three quarters of the other thumb.

I thought I hadn't posted them here those now I think about it, it is possible I did. I agree with the opinion on the face. I tend to do the faces first & didn't think that the colours were too similar to the armour. The more I look at that model the more it looks like he's going to be replaced. There isn't really much room for the combat shield he needs either. I'll probably go for a tone more like this one:

angel robertson, I try and avoid using GW paints if I can so the bone is a mix of Reaper Woodland Bown & Ivory. First a basecoat of Woodland Brown, then a 1:2 mix, the a 1:4 mix and finally a highlight of Ivory. Quite simple. On my dread I've been using the same mix but almost as a wash so there is some intermediate blending as it takes about 4 layers to get a solid color.

Thanks for the feedback guys.

prestochangeo15, the plumes are done using plasticard and greenstuff. Really quite easy. First I started with a round plastic tube (can't remember the size) I cut this to be about the size of the vent on top of the helmet & then cut it into quaters so that they will fit over the marines head. Then I just used greenstuff to built up the crest as wll as a tail sort of bit that continues on. Shape it & your done. Worth noting though that the marines have modified crests that end in a point. For a more traditional crest like the vets you probably want to stick a piece of plasticard in the middle to prevent the greenstuff from moving around. Sorry, that probably wasn't very clear but I can do a tutorial if ppl are intrested.

CrashMann, I have a Rhino & landspeeders sitting on my desk. Rhin is just standard with the Imperial Eagle doors from forgeworld & extra armour. The landspeeders are waiting to be converted a little. The Dreadnought along with the commander will be the centrepiece models of the army. The dreadnought is very heavily converted & I'm really happy with how he's turning out. He's got a sarcophogus similar to the new ven dread one, a massive banner with some art inpired by classical greek pots (sounds strange but looks ok) and will have a forworld inquisiton dreads sword when it arrives.

I wanted to go classical with these guys but with a bit less ostentatiousness than GW is doing with the Ultras and also more Greek than Roman. I almost converted a landraider into looking like a Greek/Roman war machine (the armoured tortise) but realised that would probably be going a bit far. My reasoning with these guys is that not all areas in the 40k universe would be gothic and have tried to stter away from this as much as possible (Ultras still have a gothic look).

Oh, also worth mentioning my inspiration for the scouts. I "borrow" heavily from the stuff I see on the net. Can't remember who did these guys but they are jaw droppingly good:
