WIP: Dark Angel

Hello Everybody,

I've been trying a new style of painting this week. I've been working from a white base coat. I've always worked with a black base coat before but I'm real happy with this mini so I think I'll carry on using a white base coat.

Anyway thought I'd get your C&C's.

Everything has to be so dark around here.

Take 1 drop dark green ink and 10 drops of water. Glaze not slop, the model. Should take about 7 layers.

If you want to add more depth to the model, take 1 drop black ink to 3 parts dark Green ink dilute with 15 drops of water. Concentrate these glazes towards the shadowy spots.

Other than that: AWESOME job

Hi Guys thanks for the comments,

Now I know the my colour choice is a bit controversial for a Dark Angel but hey I like it. As for it looking a bit Salamanderish I can see what you mean but I find that Salamanders tend to be a more Vibrant green.

The dark green I'm working with is VMC Black Green which i believe is darker than GW Dark Angels Green. I may decrease the size of the highlighted areas thus make him darker, but I'm fairly happy with him. The quality of the paint job was my priority and I think I have made an improvement in my technique (if not in my ability to pick colours).

I've got a little bit more work to do on him and I've got to give him a back pack. Anyway I'll post an update soon.

Thanks again.

Nat

I think it's a very well painted space marine. However, perhaps using the white undercoat instead of a black undercoat stopped you having a very well painted Dark Angel. Just doesn't look dark enough for me, but that may be an issue of personal taste. It is however nice and neat, and I like the gold. Good work.

Folks post Templar that are red or blue and everyone applauds. A Dark Angel is posted with a different tone and the comments are all about it not being a dark enough green. Nat says he's real happy with how it turned out so I think we can assume he's cool with the general shade. In fact he said it twice and still the same comments after he already responded to it. *boggle*

I think that it's really good overall. Hard to tell from some of the unclear pics but I'm not sure you were consistent with the style throughout. The streaky style on the shoulderpad and the back of the leg looks really cool but I can't tell if you carried it all along. The hand and helmet look really starkly edge highlighted compared. It looks like you're on your way to a nice unique style that will really set your Marines apart. Can't wait to see more as you progress!

  • 3 weeks later...

I've finished the back pack now and put him on a base. I've also got some better pictures. So here is an update.

***ok, in this photo look at how the highlighting you done looks:

front- comes from above

back- comes from below

that will probably need changing

also with some spots the blending is too high, they no longer look dark angels green, rather starting to appear more like Salamanders

keep the really bright highlights to where the light hits first(so if it comes from above the shoulder pads helmet etc) then leave the legs and such a bit darker

if you dont want the light effects, then keep a consistent subtle blend throughout the whole model, your model will still look very much blended, but it wont like awkward if you dont get the light right

Starks
