Cities of Death Highway

Okay, I'm not sure if this forum is just for models, or if scenery is allowed too. If this isn't the right place, would some mod please tell me what is the right place, if any, to post this. Thanks.

Like most people, I've been swept up in the excitement of the new Cities of Death. My firends and I already have a large collection of home-made scenery in my basement (which we use on a table I made in woodshop specifically for 40k). When the CoD codex was about to be released, we began constructing ruins and other useful city structures.

When we started playing CoD games, however, we tended to move around the buildings more than in them, and they became little more than line-of-sight blockers. So we started brainstorming ideas to get our games off the ground floor, so to speak.

Luckily, about that time the GW website put up this page. It was so full of good ideas, we hardly knew where to start.

While my friend started working on catwalks, I decided to make a bolder move, and began construction on an elevated highway!

Here are some pictures (in no particular order):

I began by making a frame (visible here) out of old Rokenbok pieces. As you can see, the frame is made up of one continuous, curvy rail, with support beams coming out from it, and posts down to the ground, where there are horizontal beams for stability.

Then, I laid out an unfolded packing box (that I took out of someone's garbage when they moved into the neighborhood) on the table, and laid the fram upside-down on that. I marked where the support beams were, then connected the points to form a 6" wide road. This was only the top level, and didn't include the ramp. After that, I cut out the road using a jigsaw with a straight blade designed to cut cardboard.

I then set up the framework on the table and laid the cardboard road on top. I attached the ramp to the frame. Then, I cut a long strip of cardboard 6" wide, set it on the ramp, and marked how long it needed to be. I then cut that. I traced the bend and cut that out, and then I measured the lower ramp and cut that.

So now I had all my cardboard road sections cut out, and all there was left was to attach them to the frame. I wanted something that would hold well, but wouldn't be actually permanent. I decided to poke stiff metal wire through the cardboard on either side of the frame rail, then bend the wire underneath the rail to hold it in place. You can see what this looks like from the top here (look near the intersection).

What I plan to do next is coat the suface in sand (for friction) and then spray-paint the cardboard black. I will probably remove it from the frame to do so. And as a finishing touch, I'll paint yellow lane dividers along the entire road.

My hope is that this road will get our games off the streets and onto some of the scenery. I plan to put temporary, makeshift bridges from the tops of buildings to the highway, to encourage units to enter and climb buildings. I also want to use it for special scenarios. For example, my friend and I immediately thought of the Ambush scenario from the Raids section of the 40k rulebook.

So anyway, what do y'all think? Does it look good? Do you think it will actually help gameplay? And suggestions or criticisms would be most welcome. Thanks!

P.S. Oh yeah, and have any of you made similar things that you would recommend? I'm all excited about scenery-building now, so I'm willing to try almost anything!

That is one short table, Aidoneus! But I like the buildings and the bridge. It's a great idea when lacking in horizontal space, to build vertically.

It's a normal 4'x6' Perhaps it looks short because of perspective in the pictures. What's cool though it that I designed the table with two 1' wide wings that I can fold down to make it a 4'x4' for alpha/gamma level missions or kill teams.

Thanks for all the positive feedback guys!

You could do a "Battle for downtown Los Angeles." Just add a little smog and it doesn't look to different than my morning commute.

I love tables like that. One problem (as in city fight) you'll have is trouble paying attention to your army. Having a check list is sometimes a good idea Because you'll forget units in HtH or drop podded behind a building or shooting from inside a building. Its a little more challenging but very fun!!

I bet JP squads and speeders would rule on that table.
