298745/M41 Calgar orders the Ultramarines fleet to move outsystem to draw Hive Fleet Behemoth near to Macragge's orbital and polar defenses. The Hive Fleet scatters and the Ultramarines fleet begins to regain superiority. (US WD 255, p. 67)

300745/M41 The main hive ship is destroyed by concentrated firepower. Hive Fleet Behemoth loses coordination. While the Ultramarines fleet cuts a swathe through the hive fleet, mycetic spores are launched at Macragge. (US WD 255, p. 67)

301745/M41 Hive Fleet Behemoth withdraws from Macragge, leaving ground forces to attack the polar defense fortresses. (US WD 255, p. 67)

EDIT: Huh. These don't mesh well with the data from Codex Space Marines 1998. Oh well. That's what we're here to find out, eh?

Brethren, I did a little research on Exodite's White Dwarf and Fanatic Press Index and came up with a few leads that might prove fruitful. I don't own any of thiese issues. If any of you have the White Dwarf issues in question and would be able to look for useful tidbits, I'd be most appreciative. Even if you find nothing, it would be nice if you'd let us know to avoid duplication of efforts:

WD 167, p. 56-68 "Bridge of Death" batrep w/ BA vs. Ors

WD 175, p. 56-71 "Dawn Raid" batrep vs. Orks.

WD 231, p. 98-116 "Cold Steel" batrep vs. 'Nids.

WD 207 "A Clash of Patrols" batrep vs. Eldar.

WD 284 "Courage and Honour" UM fleets in BFG (apparantly not the same article which is on the Specialist Games site).

999/M41 or 000/M42 Fourth Company lead by new captain Uriel Ventris dispatched to Pavonis to investigate late tithes and dark eldar pirate activity. Nightbringer is awoken. (Nightbringer, p. 19-20 states "nearly six months since death of Captain Idaeus.)

001/M42 or 002/M42 Captain Ventris is stripped of command of Fourth Company and is exiled from the Ultramarines. (Dead Sky, Black Sun, p. 20 says it takes place 2 years after the events in Nightbringer)

Welcome to the 42nd millennium! ;)

Did some digging in my WD collection:

(NOTE, not sure exactly information from each battle report you want, so I will ramble on. Ignore uneeded stuff and ask me about anything I - likely - missed)

WD 175 "Dawn Raid" (also shown in the 2nd Ed Book "Warhammer 40,000 Battles")

2,000 point battle between unamed Ultra force (Jake Thornton) and Ghazkul Thraka (Jervis Johnson). Ultras' mission was "Assassins" (Kill Thraka) and the Orks' was "Dawn Raid."

One of the few battle reports Jervis won.

WD 207 "A clash of patrols"

Weird battle report meant to highlight the new (then) Eldar jet bikes.

No Ultra names and a smattering of Craftworld names, but I think that was just the paint schemes.

Small Ultra force (Ian Pickstock) defends fire base from Eldar raiders (Adrian Wood). Both sides get fast attack reinforcements arriving randomly as the battle progresses.

Ultras won.

WD 231 "Cold Steel"

Two "historical" battles linked together. Jervis Johnson and Gav Thorpe played the Ultras while Andy Chambers and Tuomas Pirinen played the bugs.

1) "Ice Station Hebra"

Ultras from the 1st Company and Ultramar Defense Force units (IG) defend one of the outer ramparts of the North Polar Fortress against Tyranids from Hive Fleet Behemoth.

1,436 points of Ultras against 2,206 points of bugs.

Ultras were lunch.

2) "Counterstrike"

A relief force of Ultras tries to retake the ramparts.

1,100 points of Ultras (should have been 3rd Company, but they used the studio army so 2nd Company) against the bug survivors of the first battle.

Even after several tries, the bugs won.

WD 284

This one is actually "Honor and Courage" and talks about IG, not Ultras.

There is an article about UM/SM battlefleets. I'm still looking for it.

Any dates mentioned?

Obviously the Battle for Macragge. Just out curiosity, what models did they sse to represent the Defense Auxilia?

999/M38 Strike Cruiser Vae Victus is constructed at Calth before this year. (Nightbringer, p. 51)

599/M41 Marneus Calgar was born before this year. (Nightbringer, p. 22)

Lazlo Tiberius is born after this year. (Nightbringer, p. 52)

745/M41 Veteran Sergeant Lucius Ventris is among the fallen at the North Polar Fortress. (Nightbringer, p. 31)

899/M41 Uriel Ventris is first brought to the Temple of Hera at the age of 14 before this year. Pasanius is age 15. (Nightbringer, p. 23)

999/M41 Imperial Rule is restored to Pavonis after over three months of fighting. (Nightbringer, p. 305)

I stumbled upon a wealth of timeline information on Black Library's site. Good stuff. Note on the Balur Crusade: it's quite possible that it took 50+ years, and that Ventris was transferred to the Crusade forces upon his release from the Deathwatch.

876/M41 Uriel Ventris is born on the cavern world of Calth from the same family of the Ultramarine hero, Veteran Sergeant Lucian Ventris of the 1st Company. (Index Ultramar - Liber Militares)

882/M41 Ventris was inducted into the Agiselus Barracks, training ground of both Roboute Guilliman and Marneus Calgar. (Index Ultramar - Liber Militares)

889/M41 Ventris graduated with honours from Agiselus and selected by the Ultramarines for training at the Fortress of Hera. (Index Ultramar - Liber Militares)

898/M41 Ventris completed training at Fortress of Hera. Inducted into the Scout Company. (Index Ultramar - Liber Militares)

909/M41 Ventris was inducted into the Fourth Company under the command of Captain Idaeus. (Index Ultramar - Liber Militares)

925/M41 Ventris participated in liberation of Vorhn's World from Ork Waaargh! led by Arch Maniac of Cabela. (Index Ultramar - Liber Militares)

932/41-937/M41 Ventris participated in interdiction duties on Ultramar Borders. Ship boarding actions against renegades, plunderers and unknown piratical ships. (Index Ultramar - Liber Militares)

945/M41 Ventris participated in destruction of Flame of Iniquity, a Space Hulk that threatened Forge Worlds in the Mereneas Core. (Index Ultramar - Liber Militares)

969/M41 Battle of Black Bone Road. Ventris was present. (Index Ultramar - Liber Militares)

972/M41 Horranveth Purgation. Ventris was present. (Index Ultramar - Liber Militares)

983/M41-993/M41 Ventris was a member of the Deathwatch during these years. (Index Ultramar - Liber Militares)

994/M41 Balur Crusade, a mixed Chapter-force led by Marneus Calgar that operated against various xenos-held worlds on the Eastern Fringe. Ventris participated. (Index Ultramar - Liber Militares)

999/M41 Destruction of the Death of Virtue - Despatched to the Tarsis Ultra system to honour an ancient oath of brotherhood sworn by Roboute Guilliman, the Fourth Company boarded this space hulk, discovering it to be infested with Genestealers and Orks. Demolition charges were set and the hulk destroyed. However, Astropathic divination indicated this was but the vanguard of a Tyranid invasion and the Fourth Company have departed for Posul to request the aid of a brother Chapter, the Mortifactors. I actually like this topic, I recently started an Ultramarines army and was looking for fluff, do I'll keep it short to what I know

Horus Heresy 30207 Ultramarines attacked by Word Bearers at Calth, Horus heresy begins in earnest Ultramarines defeated the Word Bearers, however fought several campagins against them for the rest of the war.

Post Heresy Primarch Gilluiman slays Alpharius US WD index astrates Alpha Legion one.

and to one of the earlier post

Dante is the oldest marine over 1000

Logan Grimnar is second (He was 200ish when he took over the wolves before Aramaggedon War 1 500s M41) hes about 750s

Wonderful! What's your source for that 30207 date?

Yes. This is an important event in the history of our chapter, to be sure. It would be nice if we could nail down a date for it.

These are outside the scope of this project, which is only about the Ultramarines.

Well the 30,207 date is from the Horus Heresy novels, Galaxy In Flames I think, but with the whole great crusade starting in the year 30,000 and lasting for two hundred years, add on that the books actually start from year two hundred and go for about five or six years leading up to Ivistan 3. The book stated that Horus order Logar to attack the Ultramarines mustering at Calth(I seriously don't know why with Calth being in Macarrge's back yard) and to hurt our glorious legion and knock us out of the war(luckly they failed) as for the slaying of Alphrius it was some time after the heresy(theheresy only lasting six to eight years in total) and definatly before codex astartes(the marine retelling the story says they dropped in regiment strength) how ever I lost that WD so I can't help you there

This is from U.S. White Dwarf #320.

"The Kappa Mortis Incident" Pp. 74-79

No date is given, but it takes place during towards the findal days of the Damocles Gulf Crusade.

As Imperial forces begin falling back to deal with Hive Fleet Behemoth, an Aquila shuttle carrying captured Tau Xenotech was shot down onto the Theta Seven outpost of the planet Kappa Mortis.

Captain Agemman of the Second led a small force to recover the Xenotech. He was ambushed at the crash sight by a Tau detachment led by the newly promoted commander "Nightwind." Even though wounded, Agemman managed to retrieve the helmet from a Tau XV-15 stealth suit.

Sounds like we would have to put it in 745/M41, as that's when Behemoth appeared, right?

This all seems a bit difficult to verify. Can you provide us with specific page references and quotes, please?

have you seen this?http://ca.games-workshop.com/rise_of_swarm/home.htm

I hadn't. Good find!

(Note to all Librarians: I'll try to update the top post with the newest findings as soon as possible. Project: Codex Ultramarines is eating into my B&C time something awful!

  • 2 months later...

Thanks. I was going to ask you to sticky this, but I didn't want to be cheeky.

New entry:

Date unknown, further research required: Honour Company lead by Ancient Octavian, in the Cadian subsector, fails to prevent the Planet Killer from firing, but manages to damage its shields. (From Macragge to Kasr Partox.)

When was the Eye of Terror campaign? Do we have a solid dating reference?

Uh-oh, timeline error maybe?

Here's a quick story about the Ultramarine's actions on Nimbosa, after Ventris and Pasanius were removed from command in 001/M42.

All other fluff, ranging from the Tau codex to the Cities of Death supplement suggest that the attack on Nimbosa by Commander Brightsword happened right after the Second Sphere Expansion (which ended between 742.M41 and 760.M41, not sure on the exact end-date) but before the third sphere expansion took place...

Basically, do we even have a 'set date' on the Nimbosa actions? And what exactly happened there?

Well, the page that you linked to certainly seems to imply that Ventris and Pasanius have recently left the chapter. Can you hit me with some specific quotes from the above-mentioned sources that nail down the Nimbosa action to a specific date (Besides 002/M42)? We're not trying to make an internally-consistent document here, so I don't mind listing Nimbosa twice nuder different dates.
