The Vindicator's history goes back well before Imperial Armour vol 2. Codex Titanicus puts it development during the Horus Heresy, with the loyalists inventing it and the traitors copying it. A somewhat garbled version of this eventually evolved into the "Ultramarines" version that appears in WD231, five years before IA vol 2. My guess is that both the IA account and the WD 231 version used Codex Titanicus (or some other RT-era source that I'm unaware of) as a reference independently of each other. Obviously the Apocalypse version used WD 231 as a reference. If any source is guilty of deviating from established background, it's the Imperial Armour book, in my opinion. All other sources that I'm aware of are quite consistent in every source that I have available. It's kinda weird, since the IA boys obviously did their homework where the Rhino is concerned, but dropped the ball for the Vindicator.

Yeah, I never really liked the whole 'Vindictis/Vindicator' thing. It always felt so contrived. Then again, I suppose there's Arkhan Land and the Land Speeder/Raider. The idea that Roboute Guilliman ordered the creation of the Vindicator certainly seems more appropriate, to my mind.

the vindicator entry was from a white dwarf the number i cant help with but i can say it was the month after the whirlwind conversions and the mounth before the spartan transport issue some point in late 1989 early 1990 sorry much of my material has been destroyed

also it was repeted when the vindcator model was launched for 3rd ed

also i noticed your using final liberation there was a nother game "chao gate" it was the 2nd company against the word bearers the manuel had some dates in it but once again i no longer have the data

hope this helps

A few minor changes:

Moved Battle of Calth to 007/M31 as per Battle for the Abyss and other recent sources. They make it clear that Calth was one of the opening battles, not one of the closing ones.

Increased date range for Calth's atmospheric burn-off as a result of the above change.

Fixed date and reference for Idaeus's assumption of command of the 4th Company.

Whew! That's enough for one night! In case you hadn't guessed, I got the new Codex today! :HQ:

Wow, that last one is so wrong. Idiots! 200-250 years after 745 is NOT 861! That's only 120 years! According to the new book, it took 100 years to get up to 50%, then another 20 to full strength, apparently, which is and feels so wrong. Idiots! It's been written so many times before...*sigh* I feel a little reminiscent of C:CSM...

"It has taken us two centuries to bring the 1st company back to full strength after its sacrifice at Macragge." (WD 255, pg 89, April 2001)

"It is only now, two hundred and fifty years later, that the Chapter has returned its First Company back to full strength." (C:SM, pg 20, 2004)

Seems to be only the 1st company to me. According to the 3rd edition codex, 861.M41 was the Battle of Arconar. But oh well, right?

Heck, they even copied some stuff word for word from that White Dwarf and put it in that codex, but they still couldn't get the date right, despite it being on the page before! LOL!

(Deep breath)

Once more unto the breech!

878/M41 Chaos pirates, lead by the Daemon Prince M'kar the Rebord, claim several uninhabited worlds on the borders of Ultramar. Captain Sicarius destroys much of the pirate fleet (all by his lonesome?) in a decisive battle in the Halamar Rift. (Codex Space Marines, 2008, p. 40.)

888/M41 Battle of the Sepulchre. Marneus Calgar leads the entire Chapter to war against the Eldar of Alaitoc and Iyanden Craftworlds on Commrath. Calgar defeats the Alaitoc Avatar in single combat. (Codex Space Marines, 2008, p. 40.)

(Codex Space Marines, 2008, p. 40.)

Whew! That's a lot of data! I wonder if I got it all...

Top post updated. Whew! The new Codex certainly is rich in timeline-relevant information! It's like White Dwarf 97, except not so... old. :D I haven't even finished combing through it yet!

My plan is to finish sifting through the new codex, then give the timeline an editing pass to clean up some entries, add cross-referencing, and sort out the arrangement of certain entries. Then I'll send a new version off to the Librarium.

The final battle for Damnos involved a 3rd dreadnought of the 2nd company: Venerable Brother Agrippan. Though he had taken control of the company when Sicarius was cut down earlier in the campaign, he now fought alone in a space port against the Necrons. Even in death the ancient warrior claimed a tally of the foe. His reactor went critical - the resulting explosion obliterated the spaceport and every Necron within it. (Codex Space Marines 2008, pg 39)

That sounds like more fanboy talk of dreadnoughts exploding like a warlord titan or something. Theatrical, to be sure, but unrealistic even for 40k. Unless they put a nuke in his reactor that went off...

Though, this might belong in the "Names" thread. Either way, don't forget to add in those other dates I posted above for the original times it took for the 1st company to be rebuilt.

819.M41 - A perceived slight causes the Mortifactors and Crimson Fists to come to blows. Only a personal intercession by Marneus Calgar ends the dispute before it escalates to open war. The matter is kept from the attention of the Adeptus Terra. (C:SM 2008, pg 49)

926.M41 - "The World Engine" Elements from the Ultramarines and other chapters came together to eventually destroy The World Engine, which was either a Necron Tombworld mobilized by arcane tech or a starship of planetary proportions. The Astral Knights Chapter was all but destroyed in noble sacrifice and struck from the roster of active Chapters. (C:SM 2008, pg 44)

999.M41 - The Zeist Campaign. Captain Sicarius and the 2nd company were dispatched to the Zeist Sector, where they would draw the line in space against the encroaching Tau Empire. By the time of the final planet to be liberated, the amount of space marines under Sicarius's command were almost Chapter strength from a dozen different companies. (C:SM 2008, pg 48)

Tigurius' powers of prescience were responsible for:

[date unknown] - The end of Waaagh! Madbrakka, its ramshackle fleet blasted to atoms the moment it emerged from the warp

[date unknown] - The annihilation of Warmaster Niagar of the ruinous powers, whose fleet was destroyed, and only one ship was able to affect planetfall on Calth, after which those forces were annihilated by the 3rd and 8th companies

Interestingly, it was the 4th company that was with him and almost destroyed at Boros where he witnessed the Legion of the Damned. Those poor suckers in the 4th, always fighting innumerable aliens and almost getting wiped each time...

Page 86 of the new codex for all that.

[date unknown] - The Knights of the Raven Chapter came to blows with the Aurora Chapter, and the conflict was only ended by the intervention of Marneus Calgar (C:SM 2008, pg 28) [lolz, again]

[date unknown] - On the world of Morix Prime, the Ultramarines' land raider Pride of Argothia emerged from Lake Pytha like some mythical leviathan, water cascading from the tank's hull as its engines drove it onwards towards the [Tau's] lightly defended command post (C:SM 2008, pg 81)

[date unknown, but within the last 300 years] - The relief of Pallia. Sergeant Telion earned two Marksman's Honour Badges where his pair of extreme-range bolter shots ended the lives of both the Commander and Ethereal of a Tau reconaissance force. With the death of their leaders, the rest were easy prey for the oncoming Ultramarines (C:SM 2008, pg 88)

There's no point in posting "date unknown" stuff unless there's a reasonable expectation that further research might reveal the date of the event in question. The timeline's getting very large as it is; I'm afraid that the forum software is going to reject it every time I upload a new version! :o

All right. Just don't cry if I don't put them in the top post. ^_^

799/M40 The Knights of the Raven Chapter incurs a debt to the Ultramarines, which they will fulfill some twelve hundred years later by sending three companies to fight in the Zeist Campaign. (Codex Space Marines, 2008, p. 48.)
