Marines can be seconded to a Deathwatch team at the request of an Inquisitor, by a Deathwatch Team captain, or through selection at an Inquisitional fortress (which might explain why Ultramarines are relatively common on Deathwatch teams, as they have an Inquisitional Fortress within Ultramar).

Now that was found in a topic about Blood Ravens. Can/does anyone know about this?

First I have heard of such a fortress and would like a little more detail if possible.

Thanks

Oh I posted this elsewhere and never got an answer so I figured I would ask here.

Does White Dwarf sell back issues or such, so far behind being that I started so late.

Definately trying to get my fluff act together.

All file this one under "additional research needed."

Ancient Peleus had carried the banner of the 4th company for over thirty years. (Courage and Honour, p. 37)

Hmmmm... Ancient is the rank of the Chapter Banner Bearer, not a Company Standard Bearer. So I'd agree that we'll need more info on this one. :D

-B

To me, that's a truly grievous mistake. There is only one ancient in a codex chapter, and it's probably the most honored position in the chapter to carry that banner. While he's doing better with fluff, he's still missing some major things like that.
  • 1 month later...

Maybe Peleus earned the position of Ancient but due to some injury he couldn't perform his duties for a while, and in that time he was replaced? Would he lose the title of Ancient?

Just thought I'd point out that I'm still here. Summer break ironically leaves me with less B&C time...

Im Confused, and i mean, really confused. i have a timeline question/puzzle that i hope you can shed some light on, i beleive i have found a contradiction between the Codex Space Marines and the Black Library Novel: Ultramarines Omnibus.

010999/M41 The Taking of Bridge Two-Four. Uriel Ventris succeeds Captain Idaeus as commander of the 4th Company. (Codex: Space Marines, 2008, p. 40.)

In the book, this is at the very begining, and the Omni highlights the very flash and heroic adventures of Mr.Ventris, as you know, but, in the book, it states that Uriel was Captain of the 4th at the time the Tyranids decided to have a good chew on Tarsis Ultra. but, in the codex it states that this event occoured at 509997/M41. Before Uriel succeeds the Late and Great Captain Idaeus.

I know that the Codex always shouts louder than the rulebook, but where does it stand when it comes to black library. i have always turned to the novels for fluff, which is the accurate one? and am i embaracing myself without knowing and reading these dates wrong!. its definatly before in the timeline.

Inaku

It's another inconsistency in the background. The 997 date directly contradicts various earlier sources.

As far as which source takes precedence over others, there's no official rules about it. Gamers tends to give the codices more credence, while novel-readers tend to give the novels more credence. You just have to think like a historian; look to see what fits best and what makes more sense to you, and make your own interpretation. To me, 999 makes much more sense for that Battle of Bridge Two-Four, so that's what I generally go with.

But thinking like a historian, you search for the most Plausible, If Ventris never commanded the battle at Tarsis Ultra, he wouldn't have been banished from the Chapter along with Parnasius(?), so he could have succeeded Ideaus. but if he was, and he was banished, The 3rd Brother Sergeant (Whom i dishonour forgetting his name >_<) would have been made captain o..o so in hindsight. the Late Captain Ideaus, shouldn't be 'Too Late' at all, in fact, the Novels must be wrong.

In a Logical Sense?

Okay, we've discussed and voted on a new methodology for dating some items: For pre-2000 material only, and in the absence of any other dating cues, we assume that any event takes place 39,000 years in the future from the publication of the first mention of that event. Try to use common sense with this. In situations where an event is implied to have taken place at a different time than the "current" 40K year, you shouldn't try to make it fit anyway. Does that make sense? Anyway, there's got to be tons of good stuff out there. I know I'm going to post a bunch of new items this week!

Like in the name thread, I wrote this up a year ago, so time to publish it.

Some of it may allready be in the chronological lists.

HISTORIC ENTRIES

Approximatly 698.M41

Captain Idaeus, forges his Power Sword before the Corinthian Crusade. From this moment on he uses the sword.

The weapon is a magnificent blade accompanied by a scabbard which's length is masterfully inscribed.

These are later passed on to Uriel Ventris, as part of Idaeus' last command at Bridge Two-Four, in 999.M41.

Ultramarine Omnibus; Chains of Command.

Approximatly 948 / 949.M41

Uriel Ventris becomes part of 4th Company.

"~ They had fought and bled together for over fifty years."

Ultramarine Omnibus; Chains of Command, Page 11.

The story is set in 999.M41, so the "fifty years" quote, gives us the timeframe.

Approximatly 969.M41

Uriel Ventris becomes Captain Idaeus' second-in-command, within the 4th Company.

"~ He had been Idaeus's second-in-command for nearly thirty years ~"

Ultramarine Omnibus; Chains of Command, Page 11.

The story is set in 999.M41, so the "nearly thirty years" quote, gives us the timeframe.

705.M41 The Corinthian Crusade ends.

According to the Index Astartes Ultramarine article, the Corinthian Crusade started in 698.M41 and lasted for 7 years.

805.M41

2nd Company and elements of 1st fight for 'Bloodspire Hive', against Ork Warlord Gorklaw's WAAAAGH!!! Crosade, on Jorun's world.

They destroy or chase off most of the Ork warships, then board the Ork Warship Firefang, before joining the battle on the ground.

When the dust settles after the titanic battle, the Imperials were victorious.

Many months of fighting still remained before the Orks were utterly beat, but this was the most intense of the battles.

On p. 79, we see the Space Marine Captain that lead 1st Company in this battle. - This model is Sicarius from the Black Reach boxed set.

Apocalypse Reload, p. 76 - 87.

999.M41 Kasr Patrox

Is a Campaign in the Cadian Subsector.

Here Brother-Ancient, Sergeant Octavian, alongside the Honour Guard, fight their way through hordes of enemies to warn 'Lord Castellan Ursarkar Creed' about the approaching 'Blackstone Fortress', that is sure to destroy 'Kasr Patrox' once it arrives.

As Lord Castellan Ursarkar Creed evacuated Kasr Partox, we know that in this at least, the Honour Company's mission was a success.

From the Campaign website, we also know that the Ultramarine Battle Barge Aeternus, was present.

From the Campaigns website on the GW site:

"We know that an Ultramarine Honor Company participated in the defense of the Cadian subsector (see p. 16 of Codex: Eye of Terror), though little was heard of its activities. We know from White Dwarf 287 (p. 64) that near Cadia, "A desperate boarding action by Space Marine Honor Guard companies failed to prevent the Planet Killer from firing but managed to damage its shields." Since the Ultramarines were the only ones fielding an Honor Company during the 13th Black Crusade that we know of, it's safe to assume that the boys from Macragge were in the Cadian subsector."

From the 'FROM MACRAGGE TO KASR PARTOX' Campaign previously accessible from the GW website.

006.M42 Medusa V

Friday 20.06.06.M42 [Translated into the Imperial dating system this would be: 6.467.6.M42 (We can assume the Check Number is 6 (Non-referenced to a psychic date-source), based on the fact that there was a powerful Warpstorm raging and that there seems to be quite a bit of confusion as to the date-setting of the Medusa V conflict].

Sicarius arrives at Hive Euryales on Medusa V.

Brother Captain Cato Sicarius, overall Commander of the Holy Adeptus Astartes Forces in the Medusa System, arrives on Medusa

V to inspect and assess Troops, Defences and Materiel in the leadup to the safe evacuation of Imperial subjects and vital resources from the planet.

He holds a rousing address to assembled Troops (which can be found in the referenced document).

Laud Hailer Issue 222. - The Newspaper published on Medusa V (It was downloadable from the Austrailian Medusa V Campaign site), and further gives us the following dates (shown in local Medusa V date system rather than the Imperial cataloguing system):

Friday 120506 (M41)

Friday 080606 (M41)

Friday 200606 (M41)

Wedneday 210606 (M41)

Thursday 290606 (M41)

Friday 060706 (M41)

Friday 140706 (M41)

A note on time discrepancies:

Note that while the date says (M41), we know that Medusa V cannot have happened on 006.M41.

Because Ygethmor was killed at Medusa V and we know he was present at the 13th Black Crusade, We know that Medusa V happened after The 13th Black Crusade, which was launched on 9.95.999.M41.

Also, cross referencing with Chaplain Ortan Cassius, we know that Sicarius could not have been a Second Company Captain with the Ultramarines in 006.M41. - Ortan Cassius himself, who is the oldest living member of the Ultramarines, was not born until 595.M41.

Thus we must assume that the (M41), is a misprint and should read (M42).

Giving us clear date references and placing Medusa V in 006.M42.

???.M42 The Apocalyptic Battle for the Planetary Capital 'Vilius Coronis'.

(Uk, WD. 334. - On page 95, we clearly see that Agemman was one of the 'Masters of the Chapter' involved in this battle.

His wounds places this battle after Medusa V; meaning after 006.M42.)

The Ultramarines are charged with stopping a Chaos incursion lead by Abaddon, and retaking the capital.

They fight alongside Cadians, Titans, The Imperial Navy and the Dark Angels.

While the Imperials are successful in defeating the Chaos Forces, Cassius is struck down by Abaddon (though it is uncertain if he is killed); Tigerius is dragged into the Warp, alongside a Greater Daemon, before disappearing; and Abaddon escapes.

Note that I have a whole article written with evidence of Medusa V's timeframe.

I will post that at a later time, though it will be in Amicus, as it is not Ultramarines spesific.

"Laud Hailer!" I've been poking around, trying to find those for years now. I couldn't remember what they were called! I'd love to read your article; please let us know in here when you post it in Amicus.

Great stuff! I'll add it to the top post when I get a chance. Thanks, Chaptermaster Graymantle.

I meant leave the main text in the edition colors, but turn the date from grey to purple.

I don't think its necessary. Plus, some of the dates have multiple entries.

New stuff, some of it from using the new methodology:

988/M41 Gala III campaign. Ultramarines Chaplain Joru Narran gave a speech to the Imperial Guard troops, which turned the tide. He gifted a bolt pistol to Commissar Euler. (WD 108, p. 43)*

989/M41 Ultramarines Captain Gregorian leads a command unit, clad in terminator armour, assigned as observers to a Blood Angel task force. The Ultramarines squad launches a raid deep into a space hulk, hoping to delay a genestealer attack until Blood Angel reinforcements arrive. (Space Hulk Campaigns, p. 72-74 states that this takes place right after the missions in the Mission Book, which are stated to have taken place in 989/M41.)

989/M41 Ultramarines Commander Denzark launches an attack on a tug in the Owa system using two tactical squads. His plan is to ram billions of tons of ore into the genestealer-infested planet Eureka. (WD 120, p. 53-65)*

990/M41 The Attoc Wars. The 2nd coy, at least, participated. (WD 129, p. 13-29)*

990/M41 Sergeant Craw leads Squad Beta-Alpha Coy (1st Coy, Squad II?) in a boarding action against the Chaos battleship code-named "Abomination." (Space Crusade Rule Book.)*

993/M41 Ultramarines, together with elements of the Fifth Xenophonian Guard and the Legio Metalica, put down civil disturbances on Barbarius. The Eldar attack the planet, and the 10th Company is deployed by Thunderhawk Gunship to assist the Imperial forces against the Eldar. (WD 160, p. 21-22.)*

Your welcome! :P

If you can't find Laud Hailer, then I can put them up for download if that is ok with the B&C.

I am a bit fuzzy on what the B&C's policy will be on this, given that it is official GW material. Though it used to be downloadable from their site.

I will be sure to say so once the Medusa 5 thread gets published.

More goodness:

994/M41 Eldrad Ulthran leads an eldar force against the Imperial colony of Dabenlar IV in an effort to force the Imperium to reinforce their position there in order to meet a forseen Chaos attack. Companies from the Space Wolves and Ultramarines Chapters respond to the Governor's pleas for aid in dislodging the eldar. Presumably the anticipated Chaos incursion occured shortly thereafter. (WD 177, p. 52-72)*

988/M41 A detachment of Ultramarines (probably company-strength) is seconded, along with the remains of the rebellion's Arcadian Imperial Guard forces, to Rogue Trader Joff Zuckerman. (Warhammer 40K Chapter Approved: Book of the Astronomican, p. 77)*

996/M41 Forian Crusade. Most of the Ultramar fleet was engaged in the war. (US WD 201, p. 49)*

996/M41 While most of the Ultramar fleet was engaged in the Forian Crusade, the Will of the Emperor carried several squads of Terminators, lead by Commander Troilus, against the genestealer-infested space hulk Hunter of the Void, near Macragge. (US WD 201, p. 49-55)*
