Da Assembled Krew - Getting the Green Tide rolling

Had to wait a few days for it, but the final bits for the project came in. Also I guess this now officially doubles to track my Call to Arms entry
The Felgore's team prominently features a shaman, and fortunately for me GW made the perfect weirdboy for the beastsnaggaz. Unfortunately its only sold as part of the kill-rig, lucky for me a broken one was being sold as part of a larger lot over on r/miniswap. A bit of work with a knife and some plasticard and my shaman had arrived.

I must've been wearing blue that day, because the poster of the lot was selling squighog boyz as well. I wasn't interested in squighogz for the team, or even to paint really, but I was VERY much interested in the grot weilding a choppa. Felgores beastmen have a 3-armed operative called the flux-bray. Orks don't really muck about with mutants, but grots? Absolutely.

After spending another night removing mold lines and drilling gun barrels, the krew was ready for painting time.

I also pulled out a boomdakka snazzwagon I've had taking up space on my shelf for a couple of years now as well, and added it to the project. It's not usable in kill team, but it'll make for a fun component of my eventual display board

Painting time!

Started off with ol' faithful - Vallejo Panzer grey primer with an airbrush. I love this primer. It applies smoothly, is dark enough to drive shadows, but not so dark that I need tons of layers with lighter colors. Followed that up with Titanium White ink for a zenithal. Got a little ahead of myself and took this picture after I'd already started moving to the next step with one model

Next Up: SKIN! I used Viper Green from Reaper as the skin base layer. This was sprayed all over the skin elements, including the parts not touched by the zenithal white, to make sure the boyz were green all over.

Followed this up with a layer of Vallejo Bright Green from their new model color line. I applied this from above, more or less as a second zenithal to bring up the high-points. Bright green was even brighter than it looked in the bottle, and I'm here for it. Historically I do my orks in a darker green, but wanted to change it up for this project since my NMM chrome is going to be super bright, and I wanted them to contrast with the more deep-red desert landscape I have planned for their bases/board (see my white-scars board for an example).

After the zenithal'd bright green I pulled out the Vallejo Lime Green for highlights. This was even brighter than the bright green, and unfortunately made TOO BIG a jump between the gradiants. I ended up blending it with the bright green and thinning it down to act as a glaze for highlights. Spent more time on that than I would have liked, but the results are pretty good. I still need to go back and make the shadows deeper, but I moved on from the skin for a while.

I knew I wanted to do a chrome NMM effect on these boyz, but honestly NMM kinda makes me nervous. Its a ton of work, I've never really done it before, and I'm honestly not always that impressed by the final results.
BUT we aint muckin about on this one, so rather than make myself nervous over nothing I decided to do the simple thing that I rarely do...and paint a test model.
I have 1 one extra beast snagga boy that I assembled to be included in the process, but technically don't need, so I grabbed him and went to work.

I was happy enough with the initial results I kept going to get an idea of what the model would look like fully fleshed out, and I gotta say...I love it

I need more practice on the NMM portions, but generally speaking I'm excited with how it looks and I'm looking forward to doing more. I'm sure that'll change somewhere between now and the next 20 models, but for now...the hype train is moving full speed.
