  1. Inspirational Friday: Images of Chaos For those who do not know it, Inspiration Friday is a (generally) fortnightly weekly event within its home in the Chaos Space Marines forum (but open to all members of the B&C), in which a topic is set for members to write short (or long if the muse takes you) fluff/fan-fic pieces about their war bands, characters and models. And here begins our twentieth challenge of Inspirational Friday 2017: Images of Chaos Every fortnight for Inspirational Friday I ask members to write prose on various subjects related to Chaos, to tell us a tale and conjure up images of the servants and pawns of the Chaos Gods, but this time I want actual images. Images of war. Images of Chaos. Submissions may be accompanied by prose, but the aim of this challenge is to give us one or more images depicting the forces of Chaos. I’d like to keep sketches and 2D paintings for another time, so this time I ask for photographs of your models, with suitable backgrounds/settings. For those with digital abilities, by all means go to town with filters and special effects. Get creative. For those who do not have Chaos armies -or only a few miniatures-, or have friends who have Chaos armies, images of loyalist or Xenos miniatures in combat against the forces of Chaos are also accepted. The quality of the miniature painting is not being judged, it is the overall image. In fact you might be able to get away with unpainted miniatures in a black and white image IF2017: Images of Chaos runs until the 10th of November Let us be inspired. The greatest piece, most fitting the topic, will earn rewards. Not only the Octed amulet... ...but also the honour of judging who wins the next Inspiration Friday (the latter of which you can relinquish to me if you wish). Please submit your entries (and any questions you might have) in the main IF thread linked to above.

  3. For those who do not know it, Inspiration Friday is a (generally) fortnightly weekly event within its home in the Chaos Space Marines forum (but open to all members of the B&C), in which a topic is set for members to write short (or long if the muse takes you) fluff/fan-fic pieces about their war bands, characters and models. I'm posting this here as well as in other areas of the B&C as I'd really love to see some pieces on this topic from the Eldar point of view... And here begins our twenty-first challenge of Inspirational Friday 2017: If Horus had won... In Legion, before the outbreak of the Horus Heresy the xenos Cabal presented the primarchs Alpharius and Omegon with a vision - the Acuity - of the fate of the galaxy. Two paths: Excerpt from Legion, by Dan Abnett Hidden Content + Regard, then, the future. Horus wins and Chaos triumphs, a terrible prospect, but likely. The Cabal sees a scintilla of honour remaining in bright Lupercal. He will secretly hate himself for the atrocities committed in his name. If he wins his fury will accelerate along with his self-loathing. He will immolate the human species inside two or three generations. The self-destructive, redemptive urge in Horus will deive him to exterminate mankind in shame. Even his closest allies will war against him in a final armageddon. Chaos will burn brighter than ever before and will then be extinguished. It’s great victory will flare and then gutter as the dying Imperium takes it to the grave. Races of the Galaxy will be spared, through the sacrifice of the human race. Consider the alternative, Oregon Primarch. This is what we have foreseen. The Emperor will give his life to achieve victory. He will fall, at Terra, striking Horus down. This will be his destiny, see. If the Emperor wins, stagnation will seize the Imperium. It will seek to perpetuate itself, over and again, across thousands of years, but it will decay, slowly and surely. It will decay, and gradually allow Chaos to seep back in and consume it. If the Emperor wins, Alpharius, Chaos will ultimately triumph. Ten, twenty thousand years of misery and rot will follow, until the Primordial Annihilator at last achieves ascendancy. The slow, inexorable conquest of Chaos, or a brief period of terror and frenzy. Creeping damnation, or a bloody century or two as the human race rips itself apart, and expunges Chaos from the galaxy. This is the choice we present to you. The human race is a weapon. It can save the galaxy or destroy it. And as we all know, at the siege of Terra the (false ) Emperor was victorious, at a terrible price. But what would have been the fate of the galaxy, in your opinion, had Horus slain his father and survived? I ask you to tell us what you believe would have happened had fate taken a different path. Whether or not you follow what the (foul, never to be trusted) xenos Cabal predicted or not is entirely up to you. IF2017: If Horus had won... runs until the 24th of November. Let us be inspired. The most inspirational piece will earn rewards. Not only the Octed amulet... (For lapdogs of the False Emperor to hide away, or for the followers of the Four to prize) ...but also the honour of judging who wins the next Inspiration Friday (the latter of which you can relinquish to me if you wish). Please submit your entries (and any questions you might have) in the main IF thread linked to above.

  6. Inspirational Friday: Abhumans and Mutants For those who do not know it, Inspiration Friday is a (generally) fortnightly weekly event within its home in the Chaos Space Marines forum, in which a topic is set for members to write short (or long if the muse takes you) fluff/fan-fic pieces about their war bands, characters and models. And here begins our seventeenth challenge of Inspirational Friday 2017: Abhumans and Mutants To be Unclean -That is the mark of the mutant. To be Impure -That is the mark of the mutant. To be Abhorred. -That is the mark of the mutant. To be Reviled. -That is the mark of the mutant. To be Hunted. -That is the mark of the mutant. To be Purged. -That is the fate of the mutant. To be Cleansed. -For that is the fate of all mutants. First recognized during the Age of Strife, the expansion of Humanity across the galaxy, settling myriad worlds caused the emergence of recognized mutant strains: abhumans. Billions live within the Imperium, with the Adeptus Terra officially recognizing seventy-three stable abhuman strains (though only fifteen of these races are believed to still exist), from the hulking Ogryn (Homo sapiens gigantus) to the diminutive ratling (Homo sapiens minimus). Though it is believed the Squat (Homo sapiens rotundus) hearthworlds were consumed by the Great Devourer, it is rumoured that refugees who escaped or were offworld when their homes were destroyed can be found scattered across the Imperium, their expertise and remaining technology coveted by the adepts of the Mechanicum. Beastmen (Homo sapiens variatus), though severely persecuted within the Imperium of Man, fight on both sides of the Long War with penitent conscript squads selling their lives for the Golden Throne in Imperial Guard regiments. And each of the four powers of the Primordial Annihilator has their chosen forms: the Slaangor, the Tzaangor, Bloodgor and the Pestigor. Then there are the more minor abhuman races of the Troths (Homo sapiens verdantus), the Longshanks (Homo sapiens elongatus) the Pelagers (Homo sapiens oceanus), Felinids (Homo sapiens hirsutus) and Neandors (Homo sapiens hyannothus). Then there are the true mutants, those who have been singly touched by the taint (blessing?) of Chaos: acid excretions, arms that elongate at will, beweaponed extremities, bulging eyes and the ability to breathe fire, a crystalline body, enormously fat, eyestalks, headlessness, emitting a horrible stench or having a hypnotic gaze, invisibility or levitation, a mace- or scorpion-like tail, a pin or pointed head, razor-sharp claws or teeth, scaly or feathered skin, a skull face, a silly walk, suckers, three eyes, wings or the ability to timeslip. Inspirational Friday: Abhumans and Mutants runs until the 22nd of September. Let us be inspired. And to whomever wins IF: Abhumans and Mutants goes, depending on your loyalty, the Aquila Helix or the Accursed Helix: Please submit all entries in the main IF2017 thread linked to above.
  7. Inspirational Friday: Desert Warfare For those who do not know it, Inspiration Friday is a (generally) fortnightly weekly event within its home in the Chaos Space Marines forum, in which a topic is set for members to write short (or long if the muse takes you) fluff/fan-fic pieces about their war bands, characters and models. And here begins our sixteenth challenge of Inspirational Friday 2017: Desert Warfare Back in October last year we got wet with Inspirational Friday: Aquatic Combat and the heat of summer (for those of us in the northern hemisphere at least) now brings us to Inspirational Friday: Desert Warfare, where the elements can sometimes be more dangerous than the actual enemy. Inhospitable terrain, low humidity, the importance of mobility, a lack of cover and wild-life in addition to extremes of temperature make the desert a truly punishing warzone. Be it a siege of an oasis fortress, an ambush of a supply convoy, the hunt for an elusive foe or an all-out clash upon the sand, tell us this time a tale of desert warfare. I invite armies from all the factions of 40k to submit entries, with the condition that - protagonists or antagonists - at least one of the sides must be Chaos. So slap on some sun lotion, oil your weapons well, hydrate, hydrate, hydrate, leave your map at home ‘cause it all looks the same, and get ready for Inspirational Friday: Desert Warfare! Inspirational Friday: Desert Warfare runs until the 8th of September. Let us be inspired. And to whomever wins IF: Desert Warfare goes the Octed Amulet.. . Why would a loyalist or Xenos want such a foul bauble? So the heretics don’t get their grubby claws on it! Please submit all entries in the main IF2017 thread linked to above.

Inspirational Friday: The Alpha Legion For those who do not know it, Inspiration Friday is a (generally) fortnightly weekly event within its home in the Chaos Space Marines forum, in which a topic is set for members to write short (or long if the muse takes you) fluff/fan-fic pieces about their war bands, characters and models. And today begins our fifteenth challenge of Inspirational Friday 2017: Alpha Legion The 20th legion, a riddle wrapped in a mystery, inside an enigma. Experts in infiltration, covert operations and manipulation, often the enemies of the serpent do not realise who their true foe is, and indeed the pawns of the legion may work unaware of the identity of their masters. “Sinners in a shroud of lies” they were labelled by the Night Haunter and it is suspected that even during the Horus Heresy the legion infiltrated both their treacherous allies and the ranks of the loyalist legions. Who truly knows where the loyalties of the Alpha Legion lie? Do they serve the Primordial Annihilator or are they still true to the Emperor’s ideals? Tell us this time a tale of the Hydra (30k or 40k). Inspirational Friday: Alpha Legion runs until the 25th of August. Let us be inspired. To whomever wins IF: Alpha Legion goes the Hydra Amulet... BEHOLD! Please submit all entries in the main IF2017 thread linked to above.

And today begins our fourteenth challenge of Inspirational Friday 2017: Death Guard The 14th legion. The sons of Mortarion. Warriors of Barbarus. Formerly the Dusk Raiders. The first-blessed of Grandfather Nurgle. Once warriors of strength, strong will and stern resolution, they were ravaged by plague whilst trapped in the warp en route to Terra. Their lord, Mortarion, swore fealty to Nurgle and saw his sons transformed into Plague Marines; their flesh bubbling with corruption, their innards spilling through lesions in their putrid skin and their bodies and weapons oozing with slime. They rule over the Plague Planet where sickness and pestilence are the norm, where miasmic clouds bring contagion and death and where the diseased pray to Nurgle for relief from their constant agony. When the Death Guard march from the Eye, or the Cicatrix Maledictum, there goes before them countless pandemics which ravage those who would oppose them even before the Plague Marines strike and bring the blessings of Grandfather Nurgle... Inspirational Friday: Death Guard runs until the 11th of August. Let us be inspired. To whomever wins IF: Death Guard goes the Pox Amulet... ...and the honour of judging the next challenge (which they can relinquish to me if they wish). Why would anyone other than a heretic want such an accursed bauble? To prevent the forces of Chaos from laying their claws on it, of course! Please submit your entries (and any questions you might have) in the main IF thread linked to above.
  13. Inspirational Friday: The Primordial Annihilator versus the Sons of Guilliman For those who do not know it, Inspiration Friday is a (generally) fortnightly weekly event within its home in the Chaos Space Marines forum, in which a topic is set for members to write short (or long if the muse takes you) fluff/fan-fic pieces about their war bands, characters and models. The thirteenth* challenge of Inspirational Friday 2017: The Primordial Annihilator versus the Sons of Guilliman Paragons of what it is to be a space marine, the 13th Legion Astartes and the myriad chapters it spawned have clashed with the forces of Chaos on countless occasions. Indeed the Betrayal at Calth was one of the opening moves of the Horus Heresy itself. The Word Bearers on Calth, the Alpha Legion on Eskrador, the Iron Warriors invasion of Ultramar, the Black Legion’s 13th Black Crusade and the Death Guard’s Plague Wars are only some of the many battles Guilliman’s sons have fought against the forces of the Primordial Annihilator. I invite you this time to tell us a tale of the forces of Chaos versus the Sons of Guilliman (in any setting from 30k to 40k). Inspirational Friday: The Primordial Annihilator versus the Sons of Guilliman runs until the 7th of July. You have four weeks this time as I realise everyone may be busy playing 8th edition and brushing up on the new fluff. Let us be inspired. The greatest piece, most fitting the topic, will earn rewards. Not only the Octed amulet... ...but also the honour of judging who wins the next Inspiration Friday (the latter of which you can relinquish to me if you wish). Why would a son of Guilliman want such an accursed bauble? To prevent the forces of Chaos from laying their claws on it, of course! * Actually the 12th challenge of 2017, but in honour of the 13th legion I skipped one. Please submit your entries (and any questions you might have) in the main IF thread linked to above.

  16. Welcome to Inspiration Friday 2017. Inspiration Friday is a chance for members to write pieces of fiction on set Chaos-related subjects, with a winner chosen at the end of each period and awarded a medal. As in the previous Inspiration Fridays, images accompanying entries are most welcome. While previous incarnations were strictly weekly, I may give two weeks to work on some themes. I should also point out that, living in Tokyo, my Fridays start earlier than many of the Frater and so likely I will close and open themes early on Saturdays, Tokyo-time. Likely still Friday for most of you. From 2016 onwards there were a couple of changes to Inspiration Friday: While I, Kierdale, set the topic each time (or another member I appoint to take the helm in my absence), the winner of each topic will be given the choice of judging the next topic’s entries and choosing the winner from those entries. Should they, for any reason, wish to turn down this duty then judging will revert to Kierdale for the next entry. Judging Rules 1. Many of our members are non-native English speakers so grammar, spelling and punctuation should not be too harshly judged. That said, members are encouraged to type their entries in a word processor program which can help them with their spelling and grammar.
 2. The judge should choose the one entry which, in their mind, exemplifies the IF topic of that week. Not necessarily the most action-packed, the longest, the coolest, etc. 3. The judge may, when posting their judgement, choose to give feedback on each entry. What they liked and didn't like, what they wanted to see more or less of. Inspirational Friday: Timelines of Treachery is a companion thread to this (and past and future Inspirational Friday main threads) for those who wish to organise their IF entries and present their warband's timeline. I know I just about my warband's timeline a lot, so the thread is to help both readers and writers to get their heads around which stories come where. By all means please add your own timelines as and when you can
  17. And here begins our twenty-third (and final) challenge of Inspirational Friday 2017: The Black Legion Formed from the remains of the XVI Legion: the Sons of Horus (and before that, the Luna Wolves), the Black Legion were so named by their new leader, Ezekyle Abaddon. The Black Legion operates as countless warbands, raiding the Imperium at the whim of their lords and commanders, uniting as one unstoppable force under the banner of Abaddon when he begins his Black Crusades. And the Legion does not only comprise the scions of the warmaster, for myriad warbands now wear the black, having sworn loyalty to the Legion seeking power, vengeance...or forced to do so by the Legion itself. Unlike many warbands and former legions, the Black Legion includes devotees of all the Chaos deities (and indeed those who swear no allegiance to any deity). The Khornate Hounds of Abaddon, the Slaaneshi Children of Torment, the Tzeentchian Sons of the Cyclops, the Nurgle-worshipping Bringers of Decay, the forsaken Oath-Broken and the possessed Tormented. There are even former members of loyalist legions and chapters, such as the Lost Lion. Tell us this time a tale of the Black Legion, be they the protagonists or antagonists. IF2017: Black Legion runs until the 6th of January. With the festive season being busy, you’ve got almost a month! Let us be inspired. The winner of IF2017: Black Legion shall claim not only the Eye of Horus amulet: ...but also the honour of judging who wins the next Inspiration Friday (the latter of which you can relinquish to me if you wish). Please submit your entries (and any questions you might have) in the main IF thread linked to above.
