This is my entry for Armies On Parade 2019 (assuming Saturday’s typhoon doesn’t cause the shop to close early...in which case this is one of my entries for Armies On Parade 2020 :D ): The Mentor Legion, accompanying a pair of Oreo Malleus inquisitors, bring the hammer down upon a Khornate Genestealer cult on the forgeworld of Nerio Prime. Inspired by the old vertical dioramas in the Rogue Trader rule book, I made this year’s entry a vertical one. I initially intended it to be, like the old ones, with a solid back, but as many miniatures are facing to their left you wouldn’t see the front of some...so I made it visible from both sides. The 10th company were tasked with securing the surface and scouting out cult strongholds, which the veteran company then stormed (with their terminators teleporting into the lower levels). The first two sublevels are an abandoned Imperial cathedral (abandoned as the Chaos-xenos cult has corrupted the populace). The third sub level is a maintenance area linked to the mines below, the tunnels of which the cult has made great use of. The other side Actually, before the more serious photos: I put Easter eggs in the diorama. Namely the Rogue Trader rule book and recreations of each starter set from the 2nd to 8th editions. And yes, I realise the cult is seriously outnumbered :D I don’t think the 10th company will make it into the Cathedral levels before the 1st company has finished the job! More pics in the next post.

I intend to make a Mentor Legion kill team (likely it'll snowball from there. These things always do) and so am opening this thread to record my progress. So far I have: The purist old git in my wants to go with the Owl emblem but for ease of painting (and the fact that red, white and green look good) I'm using the newer iconography. I do intend to feature the Owl head somewhere though. An HQ banner, perhaps. There I go thinking beyond Kill Team already. I also have a box of sniper scouts I was going to use for my Scythes of the Emperor, but that project is being folded, so the snipers are a possible addition to this project. A box of push fit marines is on order for painting practice before I shell out for a Tactical squad box or whatever. One thing I do envision for these marines is having them loaded down with lots of equipment. Pouches and stuff all over the place. likewise any vehicles.

I will be entering my Mentor Legion in this year’s Armies On Parade. When I entered my Slaanesh marines in 2016 and 2017 I put them in a diorama, facing Biel Tan Eldar, fighting for a maiden world. Similarly I’ll be putting my Mentors in a diorama fighting... A Genestealer cult. Two classic 2nd edition armies. Now, I didn’t do a lot of Eldar models in the last AoP as I don’t actually want an army of them, and the same applies to GSC. Just enough for there to be some OpFor in the diorama. I have some purestrains done from another diorama, which I’ll be reusing, including one getting its head blown apart: And am now working on a pack of GSC. Overalls and boots will be beige as it should show up the Mars powder nicely. For reference, some of my Mentors: I plan to do the ribbed bits of their clothing as dark, dirty metal. Add some hazard stripes for colour on plates here and there. For loincloths I’m thinking red - while it is a colour on the Mentors too, the diorama is supposed to be on a Mechanicus world so I think the red will tie them to it. I’ll post more details and some photos in good time.
