Death Guard Blog

I've been posting my Death Guard blog over at Tau Online for awhile but I thought I would share the progress here as well.

I've just copied my previous posts from my thread there.

October 3rd

I have finally received all my bits and have started work on my Death Guard army. I finished the first and probably largest portion of my army, the plague marines. Here are 35 of them almost ready for painting. I need to do some minor sculpting work on some but they are done for the most part.

The back packs I haven't started yet, actually. I need to order a few more and then I will get to work on those. They will have lots of banners and trophies and nearly every backpack will have some sort of conversion to it.

A few of my aspiring Champions. These three are the most heavily converted. The other two weren't really changed all that much.

Here are a few group shots of the standard plague marines. All the models have been pinned at the arms. Those pictured without arms will be fully assembled after painting.

Next up will be the backpacks and then I will get to work on my Terminators who will all be extensively converted with alternate heads, Typhus-style vents and bloated torsos.

As always C&C is welcome.

October 8th

I started on the first of the terminator squad today. I made the mistake of adding greenstuff on too many areas at once and accidently ruined the detail a number of times on certain areas. I think I fixed it to where it looks OK but not as good as it originally did. The vents are not finished. I should've waited to add those later but I didn't want the GS to go to waste. Detail will be added to them once they dry.

The Lord is progressing much more slowly since I'm waiting on my battlewagon bits order to arrive. I have started work on the torso and the head. The legs are not the ones being used and are simply there to stand the model upright.

October 18th

I've been working on quite few things for my Death Guard force and at this pace I should have my whole army finished within a few weeks.

I finished all the backpacks for my plaguemarines. This was a tedious task and I'm glad its done but I think the results were worth the effort. Nearly every backpack has some sort of conversion to it.

The whole group:

Special weapon back packs:

Aspiring Champion backpacks:

Standard plague marine backpacks:

Here's another Terminator I've been working on. The vents still need greenstuff and I've come up with a quicker way to do this so hopefully I'll have all my Terminators done shortly.

I've also finished my Obliterators. I'm very pleased with how these turned out. I spent awhile deciding on different head options since I really do not like the standard ones. I opted to use heavily converted Khârn heads since I had an excess of them lying around. I'm not really a fan off having the mishmash of weapons on the obliterators so I tried to give them the look of forming into a specific weapon. The extra weapon slots were filled and sculpted with greenstuff.

That's all for now but I'm going to start focusing more on the terminators and finish them all off as they are the last big unit left to do(only 12 to go!).

After they are done I will start focusing more on character models, including finishing my Lord and starting work on my Sorcerer and Deamon Prince. Then I have a land raider, predator and squad of chosen which will be Doghouse pattern and finally a Plaguereaper baneblade.

I'm also thinking about doing a massive conversion of Typhus. I don't think he is nearly imposing enough so I'm thinking of some ideas right now and I may get to work on that once the bulk of my army is complete.

C&C welcome. ;)

November 28th

It's been awhile since I've had an update but I've got my terminators about 90% done. They've been assembled and the basics of the bases are done. I need to add vents to their backs and finish texturing the bases before painting. I'll be getting to work on the Land raider, Predator and some heavily converted Chosen pretty soon.

Sorry for the bad pics, I'll try and get some better ones once they're 100% finished and there is daylight.

So that's my current progress. You may notice some terminators had early work on the vents that are now removed. I'm currently rethinking how I will be applying the vents, if at all. Any suggestions or comments welcome.

*Stealing some ideas for mine* Hello! Nice job you've done! I really like and can't wait to see them painted! I love the idea on different backpacks *Stealing some ideas for mine*

Keep up the good work!

And again with the "WOW!!!"

Some of those conversion ideas are excellent - it you don't mind, I think I may have to steal some of them.

Looking forward to seeing them with some paint on.

Cheers

Feel free to use any ideas you like. Alot of my conversions have been inspired by others as well so I have no problem with anyone using any of my original ideas. In fact, I think sharing conversions ideas is productive and hopefully will motivate others to push their skills to new levels. It's a big part of why I've joined new forums like this one to showcase my work. If you run in to any trouble in your attempts shoot me a PM and I can give you a rundown of any process that might be causing you problems.

Paint something already.

At first glance, this comment kind of annoyed me but I realize that not everyone might build armies the way I do so I'll explain my process. My DG army is a new army for me. I've played many armies over the years but currently I only play Marines and DG. My marines are an army I've played since I started which have gone through several changes and are the only army that I add single units to over time. My DG army was bought in bulk for the most part and I just bits order parts as I need them for construction. I am relatively quick with converting but prefer to take my time with painting so I build the whole army before I move on to painting it. This allows me to theme the whole army and work with ideas during construction and also plan out the painting in the process. I find it much more productive to do it this way. With existing armies this isn't necessary as I know what they will look like, how the army is themed, etc. Building a 3,000+ point army for the ground up requires some forethought, so I'll take your comment as motivation to finish assembly and move to the painting phase.

I absolutely love nearly all of it. nearly all of it...

The terminators look ace apart from the power armoured heads. They just look wrong. Other than that awesome.

I really don't like the standard terminator heads for either my loyalist or chaos termies. I don't know why exactly, I think chaos termie heads are cool and all but I can't bring myself to put them on my models. With my loyalists, I use company champion heads and keep them pretty uniform but for DG, I decided they should all be older suits of armor and be unique to the model. I envision my host of terminators spanning from all over, having their gear range from the Heresy to more recent times. The older termie suits have more powerarmor-esque heads and I drew inspiration from some of the pictures in the Horus Heresy: Collected Visions book. I have bits ordered a few more bodies to use for all the extra bits I have so maybe I'll give the standard heads to one or two guys to add some more variety.

As said before, take whatever ideas you like. The backpacks were a royal pain though. Drilling all the holes to pin everything was pretty boring after filing and pinning 35 plague marines, not to mention shaving down the old metal termie trophy racks to fit standard backpacks.

Thanks for all the comments, my land raider is in the process of being built and I should have some pics up soon.

You're not the only one that does business this way! I've got a few thousand points of Dark Angels that I'm assembling before paint as well. The minis look great, everything should look fantastic by the time you're done!

The backpacks are Skaven Globadier backpacks with the Skaven symbols filed off and some spiky bits added to them.

I know we're only supposed to showcase power armor but hopefully it's ok to post my LaTD stuff for Apocalypse.

An infantry squad I built awhile back:

Great work and some excellent conversions. I am not usually a lover of power-armoured heads on termies, but these chaos ones seem to work jus fine :).

Thats really impressive, I was really inspired by how much you're customizing each piece. I really like your idea for the obliterators, it will make each individual one stand out more far more in a unit. As for the terminator back pipe things, I've never liked the look of the plastic tubes just stuck on the nurgle troops. I'd say only use one or two and mold them to look like something, maybe really ornate steam whistles would looks good next to the skaven backpacks. I couldn't find a good picture of one, but the kind that looks like a castle tower with a cone for a roof. That or an ornate exhaust pipe like on coal powered trains. Just anything that isn't a series of 8 pipes, your army begs for something different.

I've been working on my Land Raider over the weekend but it's taking longer than expected. The results so far I think are pretty good. I need to do alot more to get it finished, mostly just greenstuff and the tank commander. I've got a few WIP shots so any comments are criticisms would be helpful at this stage since I can still rework pretty much any areas I need to.

Wow, those Latd rock :(

....and heres the next question :) What heads are those ?

Pig Iron Productions Kolony Militia heads. They are available in the UK and US, so depending on where you live I could tell you the best place to get them.

I felt I needed to do conversions for basically every model because the fluff for CSMs makes me think they wouldn't all be so uniform and would have individual trophies and stuff. While making each model unique I also wanted the whole army to still have a unifying theme so hopefully I achieved that.

Oh lord, I maybe should have made it more clear about the tubes/vents on the backs. Those pictured were simply the frame and hadn't been greenstuffed other than to be held in place. I did do one complete with greenstuff but it didn't turn out as well as I had hoped and was extremely tedious, so I scrapped that approach and am still currently debating how to go forward with that part of the models. I partly want to leave them as pictured so I can simply be done but I don't think I could live with all my plague marines having spikes and trophies and leave the termies with nothing. I'll probably just suck it up and take on the tedious task of sculpting the vents with greenstuff.

Oh mk, I didn't think they were just going to be left in that state, I just hope they are very different looking from other nurgle terminators. I suppose it was more personal taste I was speaking out of, something about gaping holes on the backs of men sorta grosses me out (+1 for nurgle) and I find aesthetically unpleasing. The head lamp areas of that landraider look awesome! they're very chaotic

I've gotten a bit more work done on the land raider. I ran out of greenstuff and had to go pick some more up today to finish it. As it stands, I'd say it's about 90% done. I need to finish the tank commander and add a a little more decay on the armor. Sorry again for the crappy photos. I always seem to be taking pictures at night. :D

I have also started work on my power armored Lord. I had already done some work on him previously so he shoudl take all that long to complete. I should have some photos of him up in a day or two.

The land raider is near completion. I've added the last of the greenstuff I think I need and I just have to dirty up the tracks with some flock/pva mixture, which I'll probably do later tonight. I'll have pics up as soon as it's done.

In the meantime I got some significant work done on my power armor Lord. I just need to do some minor gap filling and do the base and he'll be done.

its been said before but i must say it again...Wow. your breadth of work is just astounding and its no small project you have there. im just impressed at your discipline and work ethic as i often get side tracked with other things instead of concentrating on building the various parts of my 3000 pts + Dark Angel/Fallen Dark Angel army. but i agree with your plan. im the same as i want all of my army assembled and built before i start painting properly so they have a coherent theme and look. i will be following this thread closely. hope you can get more done before xmas takes over your time. best regards.

Wow, thank you for the compliment. I've been really pleased to get so much work done on it lately but I must admit I'm by no means disciplined. This army is my secondary army which is currently sidelining my loyalist marines which stand now at nearly a full company. Then there is my nurgle LaTD to accompany these guys in Apocalypse games which are mostly sitting in a big box still on sprue. :D Those unfortunately I will only be able to showcase on other forums since they aren't power armor. Anyway, the point being I do get very much distracted on other projects but seeing as I spent alot of money on this army I figured I should at least get them all assembled quickly so I can play some games with them! :D
