The Legion of Taurus - a Chaos Marine army log

Wow, I am really jealous of your modeling skills, I like the poses on all your guys- I think that is what really sets it apart for me.

I really like the plastic minis, so easy to work with, and glue actually works on it too. I've been doing a lot of metals for my demons, and that is hard stuff.

Edit: Page 10 is mine!

Thanks aNex & djkest! :)

Well folks, back again but with not much news of progress - I've been unable to do much in the way of sculpting or model building as last week my little boy came down with a pretty nasty stomach bug, so I've been looking after him; then at the weekend I came down with it :X and have spent the last four days making frequent visits to the toilet :(

However, it's not all bad news - after selling a bunch of stuff on eBay, I've been able to make (for me at least) a reasonably large order from Forge World. It arrived yesterday which gave my spirits a much needed lift!

First up, the small stuff - to start with a set of Chaos Land Raider Tracks:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c274/firestorm40k/Legion%20of%20Taurus/FW_LR_Tracks.jpg

I got these because I've always intended to add a Land Raider to this army (infact, I've just bought one), but I didn't fancy all the work of converting the tracks like I did on the Rhino, Predator and the (still not finished) Vindicator I've built for this army.

Next, I bought the Death Guard Sorceror:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c274/firestorm40k/Legion%20of%20Taurus/FW_DG_SORCEROR.jpg

He will be converted slightly to be a Lord of Nurgle to lead my horde of Zombies in Apocalypse games!

And finally, we have the pièce de résistance - a Brass Scorpion:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c274/firestorm40k/Legion%20of%20Taurus/FW_BS_ZOMG11.jpg

Now, I know that on this forum, just as on many others, there are a lot of Forge World fanatics who buy a lot of stuff. But until I saw this model I was never really inspired to feel the need to buy any of their stuff. It was always 'oh, another Super Heavy Tank, cool, but I don't play Guard, when would I need it to use it?'

But when I saw this model in their newsletter back in February, I knew I had to have it! For once I felt that Forge World had produced a fine piece that a)wouldn't be too far beyond my budget, :P I might actually be able to paint it to a standard deserving of such a nice & costly model, and c) it's one I can actually use, seeing as I have the rules for it in the Apocalypse rulebook! Even my wife commented how long I was spending looking at the pictures, ha! :P

So I'm going to put this together (though not completely or even start painting it) for an Apoc game at my local club at the end of June; I'll put some more pics up soon when I actually get it out of the bag and check all the pieces are actually there and in perfect condition... I know what FW's reputation can be like for miscasts... -_-

More pics soon, thanks for looking! B)

this brass scorpion is going to look awesome as a part of this army -_-

just remember - wash all the parts in warm soapy water, not once, not twice, but thrice. some people will tell you its overkill but its much better than having "release fluid" spoil all your hard work.

Thanks for the advice - I had intended to do it at least once, but on a model this size it's worth really being sure (my previous FW experience is with Epic Aircraft and Titans...)

So I've had the components out of the bag - to be honest, when I got the package yesterday, I had a glance and kind of thought "gaah, so many components, where will I start!!!1!1!' :o but having actually had a look myself, I think it's managable, ha! :P

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c274/firestorm40k/Legion%20of%20Taurus/BS_Components.jpg

I'm very impressed too - the pics on the FW website don't really do justice to the detail they've added, there are more trapped people in the machine than you can see from their pics!

The size is suitably impressive too - the claws are as big as the thing's torso!

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c274/firestorm40k/Legion%20of%20Taurus/BS_Claw_Size.jpg

My next fear with this was, given FW's reputation for miscasts or bent models, I'd have a lot of work to do repairs/cleaning, but it hasn't been so bad - inly a few bits of bending to straighten out, and the most significant mould lines are going to be hidden by the large armour plating on the main body:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c274/firestorm40k/Legion%20of%20Taurus/BS_Warpage.jpg

There are some fragile parts though, I'm a bit nervous about how they'll survive the assembly and painting process (should be okay after some protective coats of dull coat!); there's already been one casualty - this socket where the legs go; probably my fault for attempting to see how they fit before cleaning and prepping the model! :P

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c274/firestorm40k/Legion%20of%20Taurus/BS_Damage_oh_noes.jpg

So I'm looking forward to getting started on this, but before I can I've some Daemons to work on for COC, and some terrain for the Apoc game at club.

More pics soon, thanks for looking! B)

Hello, back again - I've not done a huge amount since the last update as I've been giving the Brass Scorpion multiple soapy washes to get the release agent off. This lead to an unfortunate incident on Wednesday night when I had to do a bit of impromptu plumbing - I thought I'd got every bit out of the sink, but as I pulled the plug I realised there were a few small components still there! :o :( A bit of messing with the plumbing later, I had rescued two of the three bits. The lost one is one of the four spikey blade things that goes round the Demolisher cannon.

So I was a bit gutted, but this isn't a total disaster - I don't think leaving off these spikes will spoil the look of the model really, and besides the rest of my Chaos army has doen okay without loads of spikes adorning them...

But time for a pictoral update! I've been working on the Lesser Daemons (or Daemonic Minions as I refer to them in my army list  ), mainly doing horns, but smoothing over gaps and sculpting over Khorne symbols.

Here's another wip pic - the ones at the front are mostly done - I'm not totally happy with the shape of the heads on a few of them, so I'll be adding some kind of spikey crest on their heads to improve the look and shape.

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c274/firestorm40k/Legion%20of%20Taurus/Daemons_Next.jpg

There are four I've still not started at all, but I hope that within the next week I'll have them all ready to prime and start painting.

Although I detest the heretical, your demons with the horn treatment look really, really good. I might even go so far to say that they look better than the originals.

If I was ever going to do a bad guy army, it would have to be Khorne if only for that Brass Scorpion. It looks like an amazing model and should really set your army apart.

Looking forward to seeing it painted <no pressure :P >

Cheers,

Thanks wokkers; glad it's not just me who's had this mishap... <_<

Why, thank you very much! They're not quite up to what I envisioned, but they should look alright when they're painted... I hope! :P

Ha, well it is going to get assembled imminently - but I'll take my time painting it as, after spending £150 on it, I want to give it a paint job worthy of the price I paid for it...

Hello, quick update as I'm just after some honest feedback.

I've been carrying on doing the sculpting on the Lesser Daemon's horns, and as I said I'm not happy with the shape of some of the heads so I thought I'd give them some crests.

Today I had a go at adding a crest - what do you think, does this work, or does it look more like something from the top of a Cockerel's head? ;) ;)

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c274/firestorm40k/Legion%20of%20Taurus/Daemon_Crest_Test.jpg

Thanks for any feedback/suggestions! :)

Yay! It lives again!

I quite like it - adds a little bulk to the head which had looked a little lop sided.I wouldn't do the same one on all of them, but I would certainly add something, just to give the heads some bulk back.

How's the big brute coming?

I think "some" might be nice for a little variety, but I wouldn't convert all of them.

Thanks for you comments guys - I have decided to do just that, infact I've finished the sculpting on them and I've given about 2/3 of them crests like these. Now I just need to check them over for mold lines, put some sand on their base, and they're ready for some paint!

How's the big brute coming?

I take it you mean the Scorpion? ;) I'm going to start on that this week, once the Daemons are ready for painting... B)

Hello, time for an update :) those of you who have been following CoC III will have seen the completed Lesser Daemons ready for painting; due to the British weather I've not been able to get out and prime these, hopefully tomorrow... <_<

Anyway, whilst I have been unable to do anything with them, I have been able to start assembling the Brass Scorpion. Tonight I got it standing. Well, it was either that or watch Britian's Got Talent... ;)

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c274/firestorm40k/Legion%20of%20Taurus/Scorpion_Stands_3.jpg

And so everyone can get a feel of the beastie's size, some comparison pics:

Wik Tänk:

...älso wik Defiler:

...älso, älso wik Marines:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c274/firestorm40k/Legion%20of%20Taurus/Scorpion_Stands_Marines.jpg

Tomorrow, time permitting, I'll post pics of it with the claws - I've assembled these, but Im not sticking them on yet.

My plan is to prime and paint the model as you see it, then paint the claws and the armour plates before sticking them on.

Don't expect to see it in that state for a while though, I've a bunch of other stuff to do before then, but I wanted the model to be in a usable state for our Club's Apoc game on 20th June.

More pics soon, thanks for looking! B)

Nice Job on the scorpion are you going to give his "head" horns as well? Also I was hoping to see the Nurgle Sorcerer stuff done... Is he going to have horns as well? With Loads of greenstuff? *ahem* sorry for all the questions!

Cheers blackblade, I won't be adding horns to the Scorpion, though it'll be in the same colour scheme as the rest of this army (though the banding will be red); as for the sorceror, I'll start him at a later date - he won't get horns either - fluff wise, this army have allied themselves with Khornate and Nurgle warbands, I'll explain the reasoning for that at a later date... :)

it certainly is an imposing sight. very nicely done sir :D

Thanks mate :)

off topic: britian's got talent....you could mute it and just have a perv on the female judge :P

Ha, well, I would if she were my type... Now I would be, and indeed do ;) when we watch the programmes of this tv presenter ;) :P It's my wife who's the fan of the show, though last night I think she spent more time watching me precariously balancing the Scorpion on its legs then I think she did the programme..!

Looking good Firestorm - shame about our weather at the moment, but nevermind. It's still chucking it down here in the midlands at the moment, which means my Prince is on hold for now... as are the WGTDA. Still, I can't wait to see you get cracking on it or the Daemons.

And Britains Got Talent (Anywhere but here)?!? Oh well, we all have our painting vices... if it helps, mine are Power Metal or heckling MP's during Question Time...

waaaaaaay off topic: agreed

Veering further off topic: if it were movies, it'd have to be this actress... :D

Aaaaanyway ;) back again, some more pics to update. Firstly, I've been (quite sporadically) painting the Daemons... I say sporadically, I base-coated them about a week and a half ago, and only today started on the dry-brushing  To be honest, I haven't been doing much else inbetween, I've just felt a bit despondent when it's come to my hobby of late. Which is really bizarre as I've loads to do within a time frame, and I've just not felt any motivation to do it...

Any-hoo, pic - base-coated daemons:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c274/firestorm40k/Legion%20of%20Taurus/Daemons_pip_1.jpg

And dry-brushed ones; when all 20 are like this I'll give them a wash, and they'll be about 85% complete.

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c274/firestorm40k/Legion%20of%20Taurus/Daemons_pip_2.jpg

Aside from these I've got to make a few pieces for an Apocalypse game I'm running which will conclude the Campaign I've been doing at my local gaming group. This is going to be in July, I've got quite a few things to make for it.

To start with, here's one of 3 objectives - a pile of dead marines which the Imperials must rescue from the Legion of Taurus!

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c274/firestorm40k/Xergev%20Prosecution/Dead_Marines_wip_1.jpg

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c274/firestorm40k/Xergev%20Prosecution/Dead_Marines_wip_2.jpg

When I was working on this I was very worried that it'd look like some sort of bizarre Marine orgy, or strangely homo-erotic at the very least, but I think I've managed to avoid those reasonably successfully

Right, that's yer lot for now, I'll post more pics if/when I do owt...

Thanks for looking! B)

Nice so far, what chapter(s) are you painting them as?

If there are many chapters, i'd be very pleased if you chose my Sons of the Dragon for a couple of them :D

Anyway, loving it so far, keep up the good work!

Thanks Arenis :) The chapters that will be on the base will be the ones used by players taking part the campaign I'm running, so Imperial Fists, Black Cross (erm, black armour), Ice Novas (dark blue), and Avenging Eagles (Black armour again - they're part of the back-story of the campaign so I have to include them! I won't be able to paint it for a few weeks, but hopefully it'll be done for the game on July 18th...

I've continued painting the Daemons, they've had their final wash prior to doing the last details- I'll post some pics later this weekend.

In the meantime here's some WIP pics of a Character for this army, he's been referred to a few times in various fluff and he's one of the central characters of the Legion of Taurus. I actually started this conversion before Christmas, but finally got round to sticking his upper torse to his legs and basing him last night! Still a bit of GS work to do, but here he is so far:

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c274/firestorm40k/Legion%20of%20Taurus/Charkaradon_wip_1.jpg

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c274/firestorm40k/Legion%20of%20Taurus/Charkaradon_wip_2.jpg

I'm a little bit disappointed with him as I wanted to pose him slightly similar to the classic Inquisitor Eisenhorn figure, but couldn't get the arms to go back far enough (I'm not that clever!). I think he looks like he means businiess though...

With all the stuff I've got to do for this campaign I've to make, I doubt I'll get him finished for the game on the 18th but I can still use him like this.

Anyway, more pics soon, thanks for looking! :)
