Commissar Molotov
Obviously I meant "too much black" in my last post... :o For reference I was looking at the Assault Squads on pages 18-19 of the latest Marine Codex - though the Marine on the Second Edition box cover (and the cover of Codex Imperialis) has a white stripe on his bolter, and you could look to Spikyjames' Assault Squad for inspiration. It might imbalance the model, it just struck me that it possibly seemed a little over-dark. Discard it if it gets you nowhere! :nuke: Seeing him alongside the rest of the squad might help put him into context. El-Diablo
Spiky's assault squad is a good example of how to do it - the red stripes are dark enough to add a detail, but don't detract from the rest of the figure. Plus its the same red he's used as a spot colour through out the squad. I like the idea, but im not quite sure white would be the colour to do it with - can't quite think what would work, as you said when the squad is done it'll be in context, so that's probably when i'll do it. Im sure its the black helmet thats done this. Damn black helmet! ^_^ Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/131157-sword-bearers/page/6/#findComment-1790256 Share on other sites
Commissar Molotov
I think it's a good thing that he's got a backpack banner. I once read a post (I believe it was by Commander Y, many moons ago) where he talked about something called 'triangle theory'. I have no idea if it's something he coined or if it's something real. Basically he said that the eye finds itself drawn into the centre of triangles. If you take that picture and cover the banner, the eye gets drawn downwards - because the three points of the triangle are the breastplate and the two lower legs. The banner helps open it up a bit, but I think the eye ignores the black. The banner helps to broaden the eye's horizon a bit, but I think you notice the white sword on the banner before you notice the helmet. Not sure if that's a bad thing, I'm just ruminating. If it was a more conventional helmet i would've suggested extending the white stripe down the helmet and picking out the sword in a bright colour, but I don't know now. I think we're just encountering the trouble because the model's your first Veteran Sergeant (well, your first helmeted Sergeant). If you were to look at the Ultramarines, Veterans have white helmets, Sergeants have red helmets, and Veteran Sergeants have red helmets with a white stripe. If we look at transferring that to the Sword Bearers, it would seem that Veterans have white helmets, Sergeants have black, and Veteran Sergeants wear black with a white stripe (which could look interesting on Terminators!) I don't know... random thoughts. Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/131157-sword-bearers/page/6/#findComment-1790277 Share on other sites

Im getting flashbacks to the chaplain now. ;) Looking at the figure now im drawn towards the breastplate and from there, the head, based on the triangle formed by the black chainsword, bolt pistol and helmet. Depends on what angle your viewing the figure from really. On a regular helmet i'd probably go that route, I think it would of spoiled this one though. Vets with white helmets would look pretty striking..... (which could look interesting on Terminators!) Which are being worked on as soon as the tac squad is done! If I get a bit of painting block tomorrow i'll probably start cutting stuff up, though I do have a contest entry for throneofskulls that needs some attention. Hah, I forgot I'd spoken to you about it with your Chaplain (but then it did help to improve him!) - I just looked at the model again and I can see what you mean about the eye being drawn to the breastplate - though that's partly because of the chest eagle, I think. The eye does tend to ignore the helmet. I don't know... as I said, when looking at the rest of your army you've used a lot of black so it might fit in well. It's definitely not something you have to lose sleep over! :) On a regular helmet i'd probably go that route, I think it would of spoiled this one though. Yeah, I agree. Are we going to say that the sword on his helmet is some sort of honour (the Niveus Mucro?) or the Chapter's equivalent of the Iron Skull? My original intention was to have vets with black helmets and the vet sgts with the white stripe, but now im not so sure. Vets with white helmets would look pretty striking..... It'd be very striking in the army as you have it now - with not that much in the way of white. I reckon it could look pretty cool. Are we going to say that the sword on his helmet is some sort of honour (the Niveus Mucro?) or the Chapter's equivalent of the Iron Skull? The Niveus Mucro is a honour awarded posthumously to Sternguard - since this guy is ex-sternguard (due to the loss of legs, adds a little too much weight to a jump pack with bionics) I figure he'd get it. Im sure the sword icon would appear elsewhere, its just working out how it would fit. It'd be very striking in the army as you have it now - with not that much in the way of white. I reckon it could look pretty cool. It's worth a go, I think the terminators would make a good test bed for that. Going to be a pain to do though. Posting about 30 seconds before going to sleep isn't a good idea. Heru pretty much got it. If he's no longer a Vanguard, he's effectively a dead Vanguard, and so gets the honour. May just ignore it though, its getting a little complicated. I'd like to get it in somewhere but I think that may come when the fluff gets done instead of writing it piecemeal. Sigvatr
This was a completely useless post and added nothing constructive to the thread. Please, no trolling here. Cheers Tagsta, glad you like 'em. The MkV is growing on me, I wasn't too keen on it at first but it fits really well into the squad. As for whats next, i've got 3 more tac marines to finish the current squad, then i'll be onto a terminator squad and redeemer/crusader with magnetized sponsons. There's only so many tac marines a man can paint. ;) :) Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/131157-sword-bearers/page/6/#findComment-1790893 Share on other sites
RWJP
This has to be my favourite army on the B&C by far... Fantastic work, and i'm looking forwards to the Terminators! As for the old armour, i'd like to squeeze 1 of each in somewhere, if not more, though im not sure Mk1 will make it. I'll either use the old metals or convert them from plastics. The Mad Hermit
I bought one of the 'Armor Through The Ages' kits so I could do some of the older Mks. of armor, myself, as I have zero confidence in my abilities to convert anything. That said, this thread and it's corresponding WIP are the first threads I check when I log in to the BnC. I must tell you that Sgt. Arlan inspired me to such a degree that I went and bought the Iron Hands bits just to make use of those bits (which until your most recent sgt. I never thought I'd ever see a use for). The resulting veteran sgt. I'm building would do any Iron Hand proud (loads of mechanical parts... hopefully i'll get to post WIP pics soon). So, yes, once again, thanks so much for inspiring me to actually do, well, anything really, with this hobby for the first time in months and months. Can't wait to see more Sword Bearers! El-Diablo
The armour through the ages set is great, although a little expensive compaired to how much the figures used to cost seperate. There should be more coming soon, i've got another pair of tacticals on the go, then the squad is pretty much done. Thanks to Prot for sorting out the troll. Brother Caedrius
Its been a little while, but i've finally got something new to show off. I had a bout of crap varnish last week that resulted in a load of bloodletters going in the strip so I thought i'd carry on with a rhino that was gathering dust for a while. After seeing the new marine stuff im getting excited about power armour again. I will do more daemons, honest. Now I want to paint marines again i'll do some work on them first. Rhino APC 'Courage' Squad 1, 3rd Co. Sword Bearers http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y57/El-Diablo/Sword%20Bearers/Rhino11.jpg http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y57/El-Diablo/Sword%20Bearers/Rhino12.jpg http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y57/El-Diablo/Sword%20Bearers/Rhino13.jpg http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y57/El-Diablo/Sword%20Bearers/Rhino14.jpg Im going to do a chaplain next, i've not done a single figure for a while so it will be a nice break before I start on another tactical squad. The usual C+C welcome. That is some seriously AWESOME weathering detail there fella! Absolutely BADASS!!!!!! El-Diablo
Glad you like the weathering, though there are better examples than mine. I've been a bit ill the last few days so i've not really got anything finished (apart from the Relictors tutorial I did for Mol), but I have managed to finish another pair of Tactical Marines for Squad Arlan. Just a heavy Bolter left then its time for a group shot. http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y57/El-Diablo/Sword%20Bearers/Finished14Dec.jpg Link to comment https://bolterandchainsword.com/topic/131157-sword-bearers/page/6/#findComment-1807827 Share on other sites
