Wow, very nice minis there! I love your style of painting it looks crisp and bold but not comical- any chance of a step by step showing your methods? Also what colours did you use for your Green and Yellow marines?? I am definately subscribing to this thread!

can't wait for more

Cheers

hey all, i thought i would throw up some pics of my slow progress. im working on my assault squad an my next six man squad. enjoy

http://img65.imageshack.us/img65/5089/picture038xb2.jpg

i want the squad to look like they are just taking off. once they are finished painted and off the their paint stands it will look a little better

http://img442.imageshack.us/img442/9523/picture039nb9.jpg

next six man squad that will go in a razor

http://img377.imageshack.us/img377/7852/picture041xa9.jpg

i know it looks like a heavy flamer, but it will only act as a assault flamer. seeing that there are no rules for a heavy flamer in a squad. i just did it for looks

http://img253.imageshack.us/img253/8575/picture040hy8.jpg

the flamer was for my fireworrier that i was working of but i changed my mind

http://img227.imageshack.us/img227/5594/picture037dm3.jpg

he was going to be a golden demon entry but i decided against it

so enjoy, steal, comment.

golds: i start with dwarf bronze and paint the whole item with it. u can use any dark gold you want this one just works best with me. then i ink it with flesh wash. i dont know why but it gives it a clean and weathered look. then i highlight it with shining gold then burnished gold. after all that i will go with a very bright gold ( i use a reaper paint called brass ) to line the final highlights. for larger areas i would go back and black line with black ink for more depth.

but thats it, try it

good luck

hey Sugar-free,

i watched your soul takers(sp?) thread from way back and also this one, good to see it back in action!!. your painting is of a very high quality and the colors are superbly matched to each other(someone else here said you had a good eye for color and i would have to agree :HQ: )

thanks for posting these up here, they give me incentive to get back to my own stuff and to also strive to paint better.

cheers mithril

p.s on your templars brown tabards/cloaks can you list the range of colors used from start to finish please -_-

Fantastic stuff. Your Black Templar's are some of the best I have seen. Don't rush your other models because you want to finish them. Put the same amount of attention that you did into your first model all the way to the last.

I would hate to see this army rushed. Great stuff, mate.

I just tried that leg conversion on one of my marines, and it doth ROCK!

After a little GS in the back, it will be fine! I've been searching for an ice age on a easy way to make walking marines. This will do the trick nicely!

Thank you for sharing.

thanks alot mithril. that really makes me feel good. the same thing happened to me. i saw the molds that Pusle was doing and got right back in the swing of things.

Alpha: good looking out.! i did rush those assault marines and i was worried i was going to fast just to get it done. well not any more. i so agree with you. im going back to one guy at a time. good eye mate.

Thunder: it is easy and it works. just use some green stuff to fill in and you have a walking marine.

but it can get alittle expensive, buying all those running legs

for all. how i do my black, reds, and clothes.

all of them are over white undercoat that i have inked black to give them a dark look.

black highlights: my first highlight is with a mix of codex grey and black. you want a dark contrast. then i use codex by itself. then mix codex and fortress for the next highlight. after all that go back with fortress and just hit the high point to bring it all together.

reds: the base is scab red. highlighted with the foudation-mechrite red. then blood red. then i mix blood red with blazing orange. finally i use just blazing orange.

cloth: the base is graveyard earth. then graveyard earth/dessert yellow. then just dessert yellow. then dessert yellow/bubonic brown. then just bubonic. its up to you how bright u want it, so u can keep mixing up to get the affect you want.

after everything i paint i will go back and use black ink to black line it. EVERYTHING!

just a quick discription of the colors i use

hope it helps any

Wow excellent work sugar-free !

Your painting makes me want to break out some space marines to paint. I really like the way you do black and your colors make the model just pop. The red is vibriant and the cloth matches the rest of the model. I only have one question for you. Have you made an army list or a list of things your going to paint? I just want to know what I can look forward to in the future.

yes and no. im not going to do drop pods. all tanks and troops. with a dread or two. maybe some bikes. but again not very sure what im going to do. i will be doing a 14 or 15 man troop squad. might be walking. might be riding, again not sure.

i do take suggested lists though

have at it

ok, here's one of them. still not done, but thought i put him up. now i know that his templars should be red, but i think im going to keep them black. i like the look too much to change it. i figured that painting the rims red would be fine. what do you all think?

Great stuff Sugar-free :) thanks for listing your colors(it will come in handy).

i like the little red/white shield on the jump pack and lower greave,it really adds character to the model and the use of red purity seals is a neat trick!

the test fire lord you did is very stunning(i know some eldar players that have fire dragons that would be very jealous of that paintjob :P )

i see from your painting that you undercoat in white and then ink the entire model in black ink,is that undiluted ink straight from the jar?and the gold eagle on the marines right shoulder..is that a standard bit of gubbinz? if so,what frame is it from please.

cheers Mithril

hey all! im going to try a step by step to answer some question u all have. hope it helps?!!?

that eagle is a gw bit, but im not sure from where. i cut most of my stuff off the frame and bit it out in my bins. sorry

to start: i do undercoat everything in white. u can use black for some of the stuff that i do, i just like to use white because u get a brighter and cleaner color when u use white. i use black ink as a undercoat after if i want a dark color. yes; it is straight out of the jar, but u can water it down if you want. just don't dip it. i paint it on just like i would paint a first coat. i spread the ink out over the model. example: the fire lord, the red has a black ink undercoat and i used 2 coats of yellow ink on the yellow armor over white undercoat. like this marine. i inked everything black but the shoulders because i want them to be a pure white.

http://img389.imageshack.us/img389/5180/ssca0004ln3.jpg

after i have the model inked i always start with the armor first. so put a light coat of black on him. then mix black and codex to get a dark grey. it's like 70/30 codex to black. the highlight is for transition, it's not going to stand out that much.

http://img184.imageshack.us/img184/1039/stepbysteppics005hv5.jpg

then i use codex by itself. u do less of a highlight with this. again, a transition from your first highlight. pull from the edges, but leave alittle of your first highlight showing.

http://img61.imageshack.us/img61/8991/stepbysteppics010hb3.jpg

then i mix codex and fortress together 50/50 to get my third highlight. like a drybrush, but only hit the edges of the armor. then i take a fine brush and use alittle of the fortress grey to just hit the highest points of the model to pull it all together.

http://img73.imageshack.us/img73/3121/stepbysteppics020bj0.jpg

as u can see i then go back with black ink and do some black lining to clean up the lines and to darken up larger areas. if you think the model looks too dry brushy, then water down black ink and cover all the armor with it. just make sure you really water it down or you will loose all you detail.

i don't know if this helps at all, but hope it does alittle.

out.
