Howdy.

My battle brothers, even when the winds of stuff happens hits, it is still possible to make a little progress.

So last night aside from running around all day and then playing chauffuer all evening I still found a nice little 40 minutes to do a few things.

1) Got the LRC primed, paint gets slapped on tonight! Hooraay!!

2) Found my 2nd Scout squad, some repainting and washing was done to them. I don't like the old black warpaint pattern on them, nor the skin tone so I am going to redo them with a darker skin tone and more "Maori" type tribal marks. I really like the idea of feral looking marines and I think given the RT fluff this works well.

3) Applied a wash a badaab Black to the 2nd half of the tactical squad and drybrushed the Pig Iron onto them.

4) dug up my AOBR terminators and modified them to become assault marines. Very simple actually, I took a 1/16 drill bit, drill a hole into the lighting claw arms and then pop them onto the AOBR bodies. I think I will run a 6 or 7 man squad, with 4 or 5 LC & then the rest will be TH/SS. This leaves room for a chaplin to join them.

I am curious though, does anyone know if there is any information about their homeworld or initiation practices. I like the Space Wolve fluff, and I thought it would neat to work around this type of idea. Innitiates, coming from feral headhunting tribes, must prove their worth by killing another warrior of some fame or killing some savage predator, all taking their heads and maybe a pelt/skin/horn/tooth/claw as a trophy & proof of their accomplishment. I have not gone much further than that, but it does open a lot of possiblities for different kinds of creative bitz to appear on the army as well as endless names for sgts and characters. Thoughts?

Repainting begun and washes applied.

These guys are going to have the IH insignia painted over and be reworked to fit in with the rest of the army.

Baddab Black & pig iron drybrish applied. Next is a wash of Devlan mud and another drybrush.

- Iron Hands Lament, <all apologies to Geddy Lee>

Looking very good Gar. I really want to see the LRC. Also, right now I look at my guys, I look at yours and I am having paint scheme envy. Yours is so simple, yet in that simplicity is an elegance. I think these guys are going to look awesome when you get done.

Cheers,

and i would have to agree with that :P the most brilliant part that i've seen is the use of the city building doorway skull line... :P one of those it was in front of me all that time and i didn't see it type things, anway congrats on a good army and theme.

look forwards to the completion.

Howdy.

So it has been a day over 2 weeks and not a whole lot of progress since my last update, for a variety of reasons.

That being said I have made some progress with a few things.

The LRC is almost done. I have worked up all the metallics, now all that needs to be done is the skulls, and some spiffy detail work to jazz things up a bit. I am thinking I want to add some Litanies on one of the sides or on top, but I was also thinking that a plaque on the lower ramp door would be cool. In reality it would be a piece of sheet styrene with etched lettering, but it could look really cool if done right. Not sure about it yet, but I am thinking about it.

The tracks also need to be finished as do the weapons and driver/commander.

Additionally, I am thinking that the LRC needs more depth on the metallics. What I have looks good on the marines, but I think around the edges and corners I should go back and wash/darken them up so the contrast is more stark. Thoughts??

made a little progress on the scouts. I drybrushed more of the P3 pig Iron and the washed with Devlan mud again. They are just about ready for the final drybrush and then weapon details and skin.

The other tacticals all recieved their base coat of P3 Pig Iron and then a good solid wash of badaab Black and are drybrushed again ready for their Devlan Mud wash.

Also, I bought 2 of the newer Chaplins with the skulls for helmuts, one with the Plasma Pistol and the other with the power fist. These guys are going to added in to the army, and I think the most appropriate command additions to the army.

So anyhoo, I am just over 2 weeks from when I started, and have not been able to really get much done over the last 6 days. So I am going to continue on to finish this army. I am seriously considering turning this into a full blown Apoc. Army. I am really enjoying seeing things get done and I would like to have an army of close to 4k points. I am pretty sure I can manage this easily with the number of models I currently own and I may leave my Crimson Guard marine army for more of a GT type of army where I can get bonus points for well painted army. But I can take my time with them and still have a good looking army for day to day use. Thoughts??

Anyhoo, on to the pictures.

Desktop shot of models in progress. Ignore the FOW germans. Those are not going to be proxy Vanquishers :)

HOWDY

Well my brothers I am back from a far too long hiatus. Needless to say I was not slacking, just working out of town and away from my paint desk.

However while I have been back for just under a week I have made more progress on tactical squad 1.

I am pretty happy with the way they have turned out and am lookig forward to getting the next 4 or 5 tactical squads done as well as the tanks, drop pods and other assorted marine goodness. Of note there are no decals. All the numbering and lettering is freehand. I have been an opponent to decals since the "great dark angel incident of '96".

Anyhoo, while these are not painted to golden demon standard, I think they will look good on the table and they are not a commonly seen army so there will be a little interest in them as oppossed to the more commonly seen big 5 ( UM, BA, DA, SW & BT).

So on to the pictures. Comments and critques always welcome. Thanks!

Looking good, keep up the great work. I really like the tatoo on the sergeant's face and the writing on the chainsword looks good. The helments look great with that little touch of blue wash you did.

Thanks guys! I am glad ya'll like them.

I am hopeful tonight I will be able to get a little more done on my scouts.

Things on the agenda are to finish up squad 2, get the scouts finished. Start the 3rd squad and the assault terminators, which are already primed and ready to go. Next comes the Vanguard assault and regular assault squads, and a couple of devastors.

Then I have 4 drop pods, 2 more dreads, another landraider, a predator, 2 razorbacks, 3 whirlwinds and 5 rhinos to assemble. I may add more to ot than that but that is ambitious enough for right now I think.

There was another user on here who did the Silver Skulls and pumped out an entire company... I cannot remember for the life of me who it was. They did it disturbingly fast too. They did a dipping method, though. Spray painted silver, black wash, shake, then details, done.

I really love your force. The GS symbols are great looking. When I saw the first post, when you said you were going to finish this army in two weeks, I thought to myself "Ugh, it is going to be another one of those crap armies." I was wrong.

I can't wait to see some more stuff, mate.

OK so HOWDY

Thanks for the comments guys.

Intially my plan was to get about 1000 - 1500 pts going for a local tournament. Given a simple metallic scheme and limited choices 2 weeks did not seem like all that daunting of a task.

Most of the marines are McCrag or AOBR single pose marines. They're cheap and easy to assemble and easy to paint.

But as I got to going and reading what little fluff there was, this has kind of taken a life of its own. Once I got going with the headhunter theme and putting trophies on the models, I started really getting into it.

As a result, the plan has changed and I am looking at doing either a full company or near full company so I can drop it down for Apocolypse games.

Currently what I have in mind and in possession for this project

(60+ tactical marines, all McCragg or AOBR marines)

(20 assault marines with Jump packs)

( 20 scouts, mix of metal & plactic)

(20 + Devastors each with heavy weapon, I have lots of weapoon options)

( 2 full command squads)

( 10 Vanguard with Jump packs)

( 10 stern guard, new models)

(20 other assorted veterans, not sure how these will fit in yet)

( 15-20 terminators)

( 2 commanders, 1 PA & other TA)

( 3 chapplins, 2 PA & one terminator)

(2 Librarians, bot PA)

( 5 drop pods)

( 4 dreads,3 metal, 1 plastic)

( 1 FW venerable dread)

( 1 FW regular dread)

( 3 whirlwinds)

( 2 predators, one old Annihilator pattern, one current)

( 3 razorbacks)

( 6 rhinos)

( 3 landspeeders)

( 10 bikes, I got them in a bitz bin so those may be a while)

( 2 Landraiders, one regular, 1 terminus pattern)

( 2 techmarines with full servitor complement)

There is more that I have, but this is what I am thinking will be my Silver Skulls army. I think it is sufficient for planning. I can certainly add to it if I want to, but I think this is a big enough sized force I can do most anything with it.

I don't now how many points this comes out to, but I think it is more than 1500 pts. :D

@Alpha,

I am thinking more people are in the same boat as you and thinking this is going to be a 5 minute drybrush and dip army. I think I will change the topic title so folks don't think this is some half-baked spray paint & dip force. I am glad that you like what you guys approve!

Amazing LR man, i friggin love it, and how did you get the death on that sarge's chainsword look so neat?

I am also rather fond of ther LRC, glad you like it.

Well, I thinned my paint so it was not to thick, but not so thin I had to go over it more than once.

Used a fine tip brush. Not the GW brand, but on made from Kolinsky sable, still anything with a very sharp/fine tip should do.

I put my hands to gether almost like I was praying, with my left hand holding the figure steady and my right hand braced against my left so my brush would stay steady and then just did it.

Hope that helps.

it also does'nt hurt that it is mostly straight lines either. :HS:

Howdy.

So with the holidays and life and work and family I continue on the venture to actually finish an army and not start a new one.

I have almost completed the Scouts. They need the heavy bolter figure finished up, should be done this weekend. But the rest of the squad is complete. I am a little disappointed with the pictures, but these are not for Golden Demon or anything so... well I think they look good enough for a wargaming standard. I put a half tactical arrow on their shoulder pad. I figure snce they are not full blown marines yet, they have not earned the full rank, but they at least were selected so that has got to count for something. Then a squad identifier of "A".

Also complete is the 2nd tactical squad. I am pretty happy with how they have turned out. I am still trying to figure out a good skull mask for my sgts. So far what I have is OK, but not quite 100% where I want it to be. I think if I work in some black and emphasize the jawbone it will be just right.

I also thought it would be fun to go old school and put some weapon designations on the figures like in the old RT book. So I added a couple of bolter symbols on the shoulder pad by the red tactical arrow, made up something for the melta guns and power fist sgt. I also included his rank as best I could recall. My RT book is buried in my gargage somewhere and it was cold and I plain did'nt feel like digging it out.

On the sgt I did some free hand scroll work on the power fist. I think it is barely legible, but it is suppossed to say " Strength' and " Honor" I hope you guys can read that, if not. next time I will have to use smaller words I supposse. :)

Anyhoo, I hope you guys like what I have so far, next on the plate is my 3rd tactical with some 'Gears of War" type combat blades, a chaplin and my assault termies.

Now onto the pictures. C&C is always welcome. Thanks!

This is the type of thread I really like. A quality army, quality paintjobs, some good thought given to theming and conversions, and above all good progress. Congrats mate, this army is shaping up very nicely indeed.

Thanks a lot for the comments. I very much appreciate your thoughts on the theme, painting and direction.

@Asmodeus'

Call it a moment of mirth. I liked the idea of not being too terribly serious with everything and it seemed appropriate to put something like this on there. Call it moment when the Techmarine was'nt looking and Brother missile launcher sneaked the Imperial white Sharpy. :HQ:

@Alexcrute @ Draakur

Thanks for the praise. One of things I am most pleased with is that even though this is a metallic army, that it is still getting some decent attention and that it is turning out to be a pretty neat looking force. The dark metallic bodies with the bright shiny silver helmets is certainly eye catching, and it looks different enough that most folks won't immediately assume these guys are iron warriors.

My progress for last night was I got some more conversion work done on 2 whirlwinds and a a rhino. I also began painting on my chaplin. I have today off so I am hopeful that I can get a good bit of progress done.
