Steve Irwin's Dark Angel Force

Steve Irwin

Recommended Posts

Hi chaps,

Well my 2 week suspension has just finished and I have been busy painting and taking pictures of several starting squads for my 9000 pt Dark Angel Force. B)

This will consist of (when finished) a full Battle Company, one full Veteran Squad with Drop Pod, three Dreadnoughts, three Whirlwinds, three Predator Annihilators, three Vindicators, two Land Raiders (Deathwing styles!), one Land Raider Crusader (Deathwing styles!), three Deathwing Terminator Squads, six Ravenwing Land Speeders six Ravenwing Bikers, one Attack Biker, and all the selection of our juicy Dark Angel characters!! (whew...) :P

Anywho, here are the first of hopefully many pictures that I will keep adding to this topic in the future, just as long as I can be bothered to keep myself motivated (with a little help from you guys too!!).

I just hope these pictures work... ^_^

Here is my 5th Company Master, the nice classic Dark Angel Master. This was actually my brothers (he is like, 30 now), but he isn't really into 40k anymore...

Here is the first tactical Squad...

And their Rhino, this was my first Tactical Squad and Rhino I painted up using the new paint scheme I found on 'The Fortress of Unforgiven', the link is here: http://fortressofunforgiven.homestead.com/...2MoF_009_A.html

(If the link is not allowed, please remove it instead of suspending me again, its not very nice...)

Next up is the Devastator Squad, with extra Plasma spice!

Here is their Rhino.

Oh, and here is a W.I.P of my next Squad...

http://i698.photobucket.com/albums/vv344/Steve--Irwin/WIPDarkAngelSquad.jpg

That’s it for now, these buggers seem to take a really long time to paint, and I haven’t mastered the art of speed painting yet (damn!). Anywho, I hope you enjoy the pictures, and hopefully you stick around as there is more to come!! (Here’s hoping...)

Cheers

Very nicely painted army - a really good contrast you've got going between the robes and the armour.

Are you planning to weather the Rhinos at all? They look great as is, so I would understand if not!

Well thanks for all the great feedback peoples, nothing but positive! Much appreciated!! :D

As for the Rhino’s and the suggestion of weathering, I decided not to; my thinking being that my 5th Company was fresh from the Strike Cruiser in orbit, and about to engage the enemy for the first time.

I like the idea behind armies with weathering, suggesting a long drawn out campaign, but I also liked the idea of my Dark Angels being able to get the job done quickly and efficiently!

Anyway, I hope to start painting the next Tactical Squad today, just need to base them, and then undercoat them. The finished Squad should be within a week’s time... wow I’m slow!

I guess I can post W.I.P pictures...

Well, if you're taking WIP pictures, why not turn them into a tutorial? You could then submit it to the Librarium to be immortalised for all time!

Hmmm, I have never really done a tutorial before... If I did do one though, I feel I would just be stealing work from the link above, although, all I did use from the tutorial above was the Dark Green Ink wash, and a couple other things, I had to change a lot of it you see, as I didn’t have any other paints other than Games Workshop paints.

Yes, a tutorial is an interesting idea, it’s also whether other people need it or not, as most tutorials are published after requests are made, aren’t they?

Anyway, I will think about it.

They look great so far! I particularly like the Rhinos :) very clean and consistant style acroos all the minis too.

Thanks!! :) I'm just looking forward to seeing what it all looks like lined up and finished; the eight Rhino's will have their Dark Angel Chapter Icons on, and the Marines standing in front of them looking resplendent (and shiny :) )! Its what keeps me painting sometimes thinking of that. But my god that is going to be a long time away... ^_^

Looks really clean, I like it. Any advice on how to do the winged rhino decor? If it ever gets warm hear (ha) and I can spray again (for primer) I can start mine. I like the crisp lines on your vehicle chapter iconography, I can only hope mine comes out nearly as well. Cheers!

Thank you all so much for your positive comments!! :D I must say they are motivating me more than the pictures of Rik Turners Blood Ravens and Matt Hutson’s Space Marine Chapters that I got out of a recent White Dwarf... :P

As for advice on how to do the sword and wings on the Rhino, well, there is not much advice I can give, other than use a steady hand, and keep referring to the Codex picture; although that picture is at an angle, and I did have problems myself of actually being able to see the icon properly.

I will take some pictures of my Rhino icons strait on, so that you can see where to paint. Other than that, a steady hand would be well advised.

Hmmm, you could always draw on the icon in pencil first, and then colour it in with the white paint! Using the pictures as reference; and then rub out the pencil when the paint is dry...

Anyway, a couple options there for you. I will post the pictures later today! B)

Ok, sorry for the double post guys, but I promised atra angelus pictures later today, and here they are!

Anyway, I hope they help, I think one of them is a little blurred (I need to buy a tri-pod!!), but you can see where the outline is quite easily I think anyway.

It also I remember doing an outline with the Skull White paint first, and then coloured that in, but you can use the pencil if you like, whatever suits you best! :pinch:

Good luck!!

Some advice I've had on the freehand which helped me was to do just what Steve Irwin did and paint the outlines first. The other thing is to use features of the model itself to help you position them - things like door hinges and the like, which are at the same height on either side. That should allow you to paint your line reasonably straight before filling it in.

Even then it can be tricky - so it's a testament to Steve Irwin's skill that he's pulled it off.

Any more in the works?

Thanks for all the C&C, keep 'em flowing in!! ;)

Any more in the works?

Yeah, well I have painted the next Squad and their Rhino in Dark Angels Green, and then I have applied a Dark Green Ink wash over that.

I hope to apply a highlight later today; that will consist of 50/50 mix of Dark Angels Green and Snot Green, painted along the edges of all the armour plating.

After that’s done, its home free, as I find the armour as the difficult part of painting my Dark Angels you see.

I can post W.I.P pictures of the Squad and Rhino later today, if I can force myself... :)

I like the combat blade bayonets.... for ye without true grit, its a rather nice converion :)

As for the combat blades, I thought that Space Marines don’t really have any kind of close combat weapon on their person, and so they would be pretty screwed if they got into a melee, so, Bayonets a go go!!

I also liked the idea of having something attached to every single one of my Bolters in the entire Battle Company, and on the whole, it would look cool, so I’m gonna go for it.

Cheers!

Well, I finally got my act together and decided to post another W.I.P picture for you guys!! B)

http://i698.photobucket.com/albums/vv344/Steve--Irwin/WIPDarkAngelSquadNo2.jpg

Basically, it’s just the Squad and their Rhino painted Dark Angels Green and given a Dark Green Ink wash, nothing special, but it’s always nice to see picture progress.

I hope to get this Squad and their Rhino finished before next Saturday evening; which is when our next meeting is, and then I will have a legal Dark Angel force (yay!). :P

Anyways, I gots me some highlighting to do!! :)

Hey people,

I think it’s time for an update, as it’s been a while since my last...

Ok, not too much to show this time round, as I have been bogged down by three History essays!! <_< But hey, I still managed to get some stuff done! :D

On to the pictures!

First is the updated Squad, all resplendent in their sexy Mk 8 Errant Armour, and all highlighted!! Yeah!

http://i698.photobucket.com/albums/vv344/Steve--Irwin/WIPDarkAngelSquadNo3.jpg

The highlights might be a little difficult to see in the picture, but they are there, and they took ages to do (15 minutes for one Marine, and about an hour for the Rhino!! :o ).

Next up is a little treat; I was going to save them until they were finished, but I decided not to. One, because I wanted to see what you guys thought of them, and also this post might have been boring with only one picture in it, sooo, here we go...

The first is an Epic diorama of a Dark Angel Squad and its Rhino Transport, as you can see it’s painted up the same way as the rest of my Battle Company. Its still a W.I.P...

http://i698.photobucket.com/albums/vv344/Steve--Irwin/DarkAngelArmyMascotsNo1.jpg

Next up is a Rogue Trader Space Marine (from the RTBO1 set); I got this guy from an old forgotten box in the corner of the house (there was a whole bunch of them in fact!), stripped it of paint, and decided to paint him up Pre-Heresy Dark Angel syles.

http://i698.photobucket.com/albums/vv344/Steve--Irwin/DarkAngelArmyMascotsNo3.jpg

Finally, here is a Space Marine I built in the style of the Rogue Trader Marines (even using one of their Bolters!), and he will be painted up Pre-Heresy Dark Angel styles too.

http://i698.photobucket.com/albums/vv344/Steve--Irwin/DarkAngelArmyMascotsNo2.jpg

(By the way, these are all meant to be mascots for the final army, cheering them on from the side-lines!!)

This is the Pre-Heresy style I wanted to do, just to make it clear, as I see many Pre-Heresy Dark Angel pictures around the internets of Dark Angels with black Power Armour and a white Chapter Icon, but this picture is taken from Rogue Trader (which I happen to have a copy of), and it clearly shows Dark Angels with a red Chapter Icon, so that’s what I will be going for. In other words, this is how I will be painting my two Pre-Heresy dudes! :P

http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/mediawiki/images/1/1b/Dark_Angels_black.jpg

Well, that’s all for now folks, I need to continue painting that Squad, the armour and highlighting is all done, so its home free now!! :)

Hopefully more updates coming soon, so watch this space!

Oh, and C&C are very much welcome!! ^_^

Cheers

9000 points? The old bait and switch routine I see! <_<

Anyway, nice work so far. I like your greens, especially on the Rhino. My Rhinos are always very streaky... not a very good painter, which is why I don't think I've ever posted any of my minis! :)

Heh heh

Yea the 9000 pts is on its way... :)

My Rhino's take a long time to paint; mainly because I apply two (maybe even three) thin coats of Dark Angels Green, rather than one thick coat. On top of that I apply a wash of Dark Green Ink, but Games Workshop don’t make that anymore, and so I stocked up at a local hobby outlet that sold the stuff, I have 6 pots of it now!!

You could try that, then you may come up with better results!

Happy painting! <_<
