Steve Irwin's Dark Angel Force

Good progress with the minis and especially nice to see the Epic marines (I played Epic before I got into 40k proper).

Looking forward to seeing the pre-heresy armour.

Oh, and good luck with the essays!

Cheers! <_<

The Epic Marines are pretty difficult to paint (despite the ease that people hark on about!), I have no idea how I’m going to paint the eyes!! :)

A friend and I down at our club were thinking of starting up Epic, and I’m already learning how to play Battlefleet Gothic (well, on and off), and I was inspired by this Fleet here:

The Pre-Heresy stuff is always cool to paint, I have already done a Pre-Heresy Death Guard Marine for my 5500 pt Death Guard force, again used as a mascot. I may have to post pictures of that army at some point...

Anyway, thanks for the reply!

Steve

The Epic Diorama looks excellent so full marks for that. Overall I really like your 'shiny' armour approach - although I know it's not everyone's taste - as after all what self respecting Astartes would go into battle with mucky plate eh? Keep it going :o. Remember, you have a page waiting ...

Thanks for the input!! :P

I feel that the shiny armour helps make the Dark Angel Power Armour look more dark and sinister, which I think is more in character for the Dark Angels themselves, although I wouldn’t advise it for other Chapters...

I’m going to continue tomorrow, starting with the metallic areas first, then moving on to other little bits, such as the Imperial Aquila, ect.

It shouldn’t be long now before they are finished... :)

Cheers!

Steve

You know Steve, these look really, really good.

I have one thing that might help you with your wings and things. Now, I grant you, there are a few times the technice won't work, like on the doors with a half dozen mini-steps in them, but here goes:

Cut yourself a template or mask in one of either two fashions, depending on your ultimate paint preference. Either in the fashion to paint white first, then lay it over and paint down your green around the white, or cut out the area where you want your white to be.

I find that 3x5 cards work exceptionally well for this. Conversely, if you're only going to use the design once, masking tape cut out on a board prior to laying it on the model works really well.

It is, after all, easier to use the straightedge on a truly flat surface instead of a vehicle with all its bumps and lumps. It also (provided you paint lightly and not huge runny drips, and I don't think YOU do) means you get much crisper lines.

You know, that sounds like quite an interesting idea. It would save me so much time too, as the winged sword and wings on the doors take several hours by themselves!!

Also, panting them on eight Rhino’s is not a very motivating thought... :eek

I may try this technique on a piece of scrap plastic first, just to see if I can do it properly, then I will move on the Rhino’s.

Thanks for the tip!! ;)

Steve

Yup, just cut out the design BEFORE you put it on the model :D First time I did it (about, oh, 15-20 years ago) I hadn't thought about what it'd do to the plastic underneath.

The nice part is, you can just tape it down too, and if you have an airbrush, hours become seconds.

Excellent work, great paintjob. Love the way your making them look dark, makes them look far more sinister.

Keep up the great work, and take your time painting. Don't feel you have to rush to get them painted, or feel that the painting is something to be done because it has to be. Make the process enjoyable, open a music player on your computer, or charge up your ipod/mp3, or even put a favourite film on in the background, I guarantee, makes the painting much more fun. Alternate the items you paint, a unit first, then a character and then maybe a tank, that way your not painting infantry after infantry, which can be the biggest reason why people hate painting. (Trust me, this piece of advice comes from painting close to 100 Cadians in quick succession with just 2 sentinels to break the monotomy :P :tu: )

Good luck and I'll be subscribing to this thread :P

Thanks! It took me a while to find a suitable 2nd paint scheme for this force (as this would be my 2nd Dark Angel army), and after coming across the particular paint scheme on The Fortress of Unforgiven that uses Dark Green Ink, I was hooked!! I think that’s all I use from that scheme now...

I never thought of painting miniatures in that way before; I always thought of it as a chore, something that had to be done before the next club meeting so that I could use them on the table-top. I have a rule you see, if a particular miniature isn’t painted, then I won’t allow myself to use it on the table-top; so I press myself to finishing my models... :D

I really like your advice though, for the past month or so, I have been painting Tactical Squads and Devastator Squads. I think next up I should do a Deathwing Squad... that should be quite a nice release, while playing music, which is another great idea (I can’t believe I never thought of it!). ^_^

Hehe, I don’t envy my mate then, he just started Imperial Guard and plans on purchasing around 120 infantry... :P

Well I thank you for your support!!

I will be following your topic closely too, so no slacking over there either!

Cheers!

Steve

Hey kids!

Another update of my W.I.P Tactical Squad, and the last one for about a week or so, as I am leaving for Belgium today to see my Brother!! :o

All I have done is the bone (Imperial Aquila, skull insignia, purity seals, ect), and I think 5 or 6 of the Bolters.

I really haven’t had much time to do anything lately, which is quite annoying, but hopefully I will when I get back in a weeks’ time! ;)

Enjoy! Oh, and don’t take any notice of the five Plasma Cannon toting Marines in the background, they are for later... :P

Steve

Coming along nicely.

I must say, I'm impressed by your motivation. I have never managed to churn minitaures out at that speed!

Hehe, I am honestly surprised by your comment! I feel that my painting progress is really slow compared to some of the other work I have witnessed on the Bolter and Chainword…

I am still in Belgium visiting my brother for Easter weekend, and will travel back to the UK next Wednesday, so like I said, no updates until around then, but stick around anyway!

C&C very welcome!! :tu:

Cheers!

Steve

  • 2 weeks later...

Ok, update time.

I have been a little tied down this half term due to the fact that I was in Belgium for a week, thus allowing me to do only a little bit of work.

The Veteran Sergeant’s robe is all done, along with all the purity seals, eye lenses and ammo pouches.

I only really need to do freehand Squad, Company and Chapter icons on six of the Bolter Marines, then paint their bases then they will be finished which is nice to think about, the icons won’t take too long to paint either (having got lots of practice in now :P ).

Anyway, here is the picture of the updated Squad, some of the newly painted stuff may be a little hard to see, as the models are just standing on my desk, and I’m not using my light-box.

http://i698.photobucket.com/albums/vv344/Steve--Irwin/WIPDarkAngelSquadNo5.jpg

Well, I hope you like, it’s not much but I should be able to get you guys another update pretty soon of the finished Squad. Then all I have to do is the Rhino... ;)

C&C always welcome!

Cheers!

Steve

Loking good SI keep it going. Be careful with putting too much light highlighting on the bolter casings as they are starting to look grey. But I do like the extensive use of the bayonets that you have modelled, look very good indeed.

Cheers

I

I agree about the bolter casings, although it may even out once there's more colour and tonal variation on the other minis.

However, if it does become an issue, you could try:

Using a 50/50 Black/grey mix for the highlights.

Using a wash to darken them down a touch.

Thinning your grey paint with a little water so the highlights are more translucent.

It’s interesting to read what you think about what I have done so far, but I am surprised that my Bolters are coming across as a little grey. Is this the case for the other two squads as well?

You have to take into account that these guys are just sitting on my desk, and I haven’t really put any effort into taking the picture at all (maybe it’s some strange lighting effect...).

Thanks for the heads up anyway Isiah and Gillyfish, I will take what you have said into consideration. :)

As for the squad itself, the Squad, Company and Chapter Icons are all done, now I just need to base six of the Bolter Marines and they will be finished. Then I need to paint up the weapons on the other Marines. Pictures to follow shortly, hopefully... ;)

Cheers!

Steve

As a new 40k player, I have really enjoyed learning from you in this thread. Thanks!

I’m pleased to be of assistance!! ^_^

Hopefully later on at some point after I have finished about half of the Battle Company, I will post up an actual step by step guide, of how I painted my Dark Angels, if you so wish?

As for now, I just wanted to post up a few pictures of what I have left to construct/paint, just for :cusss and giggles!! :D

First up we have the Deathwing element of my Dark Angels (they look painted don’t they). These will be stripped of paint, and re-painted sexy uber styles!

http://i698.photobucket.com/albums/vv344/Steve--Irwin/DeathwingTerminators.jpg

Here are my Deathwing Land Raiders, these plus the Terminators make a juicy 1750 pt force! The far one unfortunately cannot be stripped; it’s too big a model...

http://i698.photobucket.com/albums/vv344/Steve--Irwin/DeathwingLandRaiders.jpg

Next up are the Ravenwing, with Melta galore! Oh, and um yeah, that is six Land Speeders... ;)

http://i698.photobucket.com/albums/vv344/Steve--Irwin/RavenwingForce.jpg

Here I have already constructed two Whirlwinds and two Dreadnoughts, this was prior to me realising I desired a 9000 pt force, and so I didn’t think to not make them...

http://i698.photobucket.com/albums/vv344/Steve--Irwin/ConstructedWhirlwindsandDreadnought.jpg

Here be the 5th Company Veterans and their Drop Pod, all resplendent in their close combat glory, sort of anyway. They may not be as hard as some of the new Marine stuff, but they look so much cooler!!

http://i698.photobucket.com/albums/vv344/Steve--Irwin/DarkAngelCompanyVeteransandDropPod.jpg

Command Staff, allowing me to choose from a fair few different types of Chaplain and Company Master, and the Command Squad of course, you may be able to see the nose of Sammael’s Jet Bike in this picture (he will be stripped of paint too, poor guy  ).

http://i698.photobucket.com/albums/vv344/Steve--Irwin/CommandStaff.jpg

Here are the future Veteran Sergeants for my Battle Company. One or three will have to be stripped of paint, but that should be ok.

http://i698.photobucket.com/albums/vv344/Steve--Irwin/FutureDarkAngelVeteranSergeants.jpg

Last of all is the big pile of unopened boxes, the yet to be constructed stuff; and why should I make it all, it’s just going to sit there tormenting me (with all the above stuff too), so I shove all this away while I’m painting my current Squad/s.

http://i698.photobucket.com/albums/vv344/Steve--Irwin/SpaceMarineBoxSets.jpg

If you see any painted stuff, don’t be confused, I’m not sneaking Dark Angels behind your backs. They were from my old Dark Angel force, from several years ago; I intend to strip the paint from all of them, and re-use them in this force.

I hope to get all this done by September, but that deadline is looking all the more impossible every day. <_< Ah well, posted picture progress of the finished squad members should be up by later this evening...

Enjoy!

Steve

Wow, that is a lot of stuff to paint, especially by September!

Still, you've made good progress, so even getting some of it done will leave you with a good force.

Do you have a painting plan or will you paint whatever you fancy at that time?

Do you have a painting plan or will you paint whatever you fancy at that time?

Lately I have been trying to paint at every spare moment, as I seem to get very easily distracted (I mean, I’m on the computer now, whereas I could be painting!! ).

It’s very annoying, and I don’t really know how to help the situation; I can’t get into the mood, and paint for hours on end like some other people, it’s just short bursts with me, and then I’m up and about again...

Odd. <_<

Steve

Okay then, here be the scheduled update for tonight.

The Squad had six of its members completely finished, the other four still have little bits left that I can finish tomorrow. See if you can guess which four... ;)

Enjoy!

http://i698.photobucket.com/albums/vv344/Steve--Irwin/WIPDarkAngelSquadNo6Picture1.jpg

The natural lighting in my area has in fact gone (it was like, 9:45 in the evening  ), and so the quality of this picture might be somewhat reduced, if so, I apologise.

The final touches to the Squad should take no longer than an hour tomorrow I think, then it’s on to the Rhino, and those blasted icons... <_<

Cheers!

Steve

Steve what if you drew out the icons onto sheet styrene, paint the area white, then using the styrene cutouts as a template, spray over them?

It sounds like a good plan, but the fact that white paint could get where I don’t want it is pretty off-putting. I much prefer to do it by hand, and to have the insurance that white paint won’t go everywhere.

Plus I just cannot be bothered to cut out the shape in polystyrene... ;)

Steve, I see what looks like a plastic marine from your 5/Co with twin LCs. Where'd that second LC come from?

Those Pair of Lightning Claws would come from the Assault Terminator boxed set, cut off at the wrists, and attached at the elbow of the Power Armour.

Hope that was helpful! :)

Cheers!

Steve
