Pre-Heresy Stormbird Troop transport

Recommended Posts

Finally got some cheap troops from ebay and slapped some paint on them. first batch are done and temp. attached in a depolyment type pose. I really can't decide if I should go with the jet effect on the backpacks or not. Watcha think chaps?

Just tacked on for now and left one unit clear so you can compare

Appreciate any input

This is really a great conversion, and as usual some very nice painting to back it up. I am a little torn on the effects on the jump packs. On the one hand it looks a little odd seeing the ones without it just falling out of the transport because the ones with the effects make it harder to see the wire holding them in line, and on the other hand I just dont personally care for the jet effect.

I think the jump pack guys at the front should have the flame effects, with the guys at the back appearing to have just left the transport and be free falling. If this was "real" there would be a split second delay between leaping form the craft and the engines igniting!

Overall an absolutely exquisite project, my fave on B&C so far!

You must have some technical or art background, cause this piece is

'Personally I think the jet effect isn't really working cause the color looks off. They look a bit like carrots right now.

I agree chaps, the giant carrots were just not doing it for me. Blue/white I think is much more asthetically pleasing and keeps with the blue tones, watcha think? Think I will also just add them to the lower marines on the stack on the finished display to represent that split second freefall as they go overboard!

Still looks absolutely great!

One of my definitive all time favorites on the B&C. :)

Still not sure about the flames though. - I actually liked the orange ones better than the blue.

Orange is more realistic and a nice complimentary colour to draw the attention more towards the Marines, that are relatively small next too the Stormbird.

But a superb project either way!

Keep it up! :tu:

Just wondering: - What WD issue and Uk or Us, is the image from?

I don't like the jet effects. They seem too over the top. If you consider that a jump pack is similar to an aeroplane's jet, it would cause distortion in the air, but not massive flames.

You could get a small bit of clear resin, making the air just behind the pack look distorted. If you can pull off this amazing conversion, that should be in your reach :) .

But as far as the painting goes, well done.

It just struck me that in the Mentor Legion Index Astartes article, one can see an image of a Marine having his armour fitted.

In the background of this image there is a lead-glass window showing a Marine and a couple of flyers looking a lot like the flyer in the image that Daeothar put up.

This also seems like it is a smaller version of the Stormbird, so at one time Marines had several aircraft based on this type of design.

Love the project. I have one of the same toy I have been planing on making into an Imperial Fist stormbird (When and if I ever get the time).

As for your work all I can say is WOW. Someone above had posted that you should have the marines in the door and having just jumped with no flames but the marines hitting the LZ would be at full burn. I think this was a great idea and you could even put a few marines with flames just starting up. This would give the model a very real and action feel, instead of a stactic modles most end up making.

Whatever you do its going to be amazing and I can't wait to see the final work.

Now just tell me when you strat taking commissions ;)

Taken all the comments on board and I think we seem to be singing from the same chapter Astartes

Captain Mike, I did consider than but had to abandon the idea due to technical difficulties - Technically I just couldn't be bothered! Not really going for the realistic effect to be honest though, more the comic book approach much the same as the rest of the Crimson Ultrawings in fact I am happy enough with them now to add a few among the assault troops and probably on the marines zooming around Odin's legs :D

Anyhow, incremented the jets to a full burn on the lower models and added a few muzzle flashes. Just waiting on some more rocket packs from ebay now which I will use as retro's on the Rhino being slung out the back!

Exactly!!

Although there, the cockpit area looks more like a Mi-24 Hind helicopter, but the tilting fans are there. Looks like artists have been influencing eachother all the time, with the same basic design floating around, and only details differing. I had been planning to post that image here, but I have been putting off scanning that page in my red compendium (or is it the yellow one? Can't remember now) and there you are, cutting me off at the pass. ^_^

I wonder now if there are any more images from that era floating around...

Graymantle: if I'm not mistaken, that particular image is form UK WD 95...

Thats so dope!

I think it looks quite like the the picture, and since its smaller, it deserves to have its own differences. The guys coming out the sides are wonderful, but as said before, I think the guys just coming out of the ship should be freefalling for a bit. It makes a bit more sense.

Down with the carrots!
