The Chapter List Project

Recommended Posts

Ok you guys might remember some time back we were going to move Liber Astartes here to the B&C. But I didn't want it to just be a list of names and founding dates like it was before, it needed to be the resource for Chapter information. So we put it out to the masses to lend a hand:

http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/index.php?showtopic=92998

As you can see, there was some help but not to the level we were hoping for. So I took it upon myself to start going through all the GW publications I could find for info on Chapters. I set the document up and it looks somewhat similar to this thread in the UM forum (though in not such detail):

http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/index.php?showtopic=94943

The document now sits at 145 pages however there are numerous publications left to go through, many of which I no longer have and this is where you guys come in (if you want to).

I'm starting back through the novels I have left but there are quite a few I do not have that may or may not have refrences to Chapters.

So below are a list of publications that I do not have and if you have them would like to ask you to comb through for refrences to the Chapters and list them here:

Warhammer Monthly - entire run

Inferno Magazine - entire run

Boom Studios Black Templar Comics

Citadel Journal -- the full run

White Dwarf issue #s 101, 105, 106, 139

Novels: Please note this is simply the novels I haven't gotten around to going through yet so if you have them and want to add any Chapter info from them please do. A full novel list can be found here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Black_Library_novels

  • Ultra Marine - from the Ultra Marine game (the one with scouts)
  • Tyranid Attack
  • Death Wing Space Hulk Supplement
  • Genestealer Space Hulk Supplement
  • Space Marine -- EPIC game
  • Adeptus Titanicus
  • The square chit games like Horus Heresy and 3rd War for Armageddon

Probably some things I forgot here but those are the main ones.

Currently I have 300+ official Chapters on the list.

The type of refrences that we want to add to the document are things like famous battles, names of marines, names of tanks, recruiting worlds, interesting tidbits on Chapters (like how the Red Scorpions take their recruits the day they are born rather than at age 12 like most other Chapters). The document looks like this for most Chapters right now:

Novamarines [Nova Marines]:

  • Brother Scullion. Member of the Deathwatch during the Cleansing of Pavia. Deathwatch Graphic novel.
  • Picture: C:SMv5 pg. 118
  • Ultramarine Successor: 2nd Founding. C:SMv5 pg. 8, C:SMv3 pg. 47 ( named in Apocrypha of Davio M33), Chapter Approved 2002 pg. 117, Codex: Angels of Death pg. 7, Codex: Ultramarines pg. 9, WD288 pg. 112
  • Have not fought together as a Chapter since M37. C:SMv5 pg. 25
  • Chapter Planet: Honourum. C:SMv5 galactic map

There are a few Chapters I'm not sure about being on the list either. They mostly appear in the "Create a Chapter" articles in WD and HtPSM. They are Chapters that have appeared in Golden Demons but their inclusion in the official articles and How To Paint books makes me wonder if I should count them as official. The Chapters are the Sons of Jagahti, Knights of Dorn, Hospitallers and Emperor's Shadow.

I have not included Chapters from the Create a Chapter Golden Demon competition or the online comps, except for the Yellow Jackets and White Panthers which were subsequently written into the official fluff.

The goal from all this is to a. improve the stickies at the top of the Army specific forums b. improve the current IA articles we have in the Librarium and enhance the eventual WIKI we put up and c. There is no reason anyone should come to the B&C for Marine info and then be told to go to Lexicanum (which is often wrong!).

So any help you can render would be appreciated. Later today when I get home I will start adding the file to another thread. This will be so we can keep questions/answers out of the actual file info. So ask away whatever you might have.

The most important thing as we gather the information is citation. We do not want to be like the various 40k wikis that are plagued with fan fic and "I read in RT days sometime" as refrences. So we need to cite chapter and verse so to speak and from as many sources as possible.

Kurgan, are those WD numbers US?

We can ask the mods for some of those resources or the frater if we can't get them any other way.

I think that we should leave the larger Legions/Chapters until later. We don't want to really double up on the Comprehensive History articles as well.

Well the Comprehensive History articles could always just be expanded -- no need to double up on them at all.

The WD #s are "universal" until WD 200 at which point they are US. So if you are in the UK add 1 to the # and if you are elsewhere in the world (like Canada) good luck figuring out the #s at all. :(

As for posting, I'm going to initially just cut-n-paste out of my file into a post/thread in here for you guys to start picking over. I figure after that anything that someone wants to add they can just edit into that post (yes everyone can edit posts in this forum now -- at least Lex and Codiciers) and mark it out in another color. Then next person comes along with more info and they edit that in in another color -- that way we have quick seperation of what is "new".

The goal here is several fold:

1. Restore the old Liber Astartes website, at least the official GW Chapters portion. If later on we decide DIYers can add to the "list" in someway we'll make a seperation and put most of the onus on the DIYer to put their info together.

2. What I feel to be the most important goal: There is zero reason that anyone should come to the B&C for Marine info and then be told simply "go to Lexicanum". That reply torques me off to no end. We are the resource site for Marines and that means we need to provide as much quality information as possible to our readers.

This will, in effect, be a constantly on going project. We will always be adding to these files and really there should be a web of interlocking links and such by the time it is over. Chapters, Characters, famous worlds/battles and so on.

The admins are talking about reinventing the old AD project as well to get some extra help for all the various projects on the board and this would certainly be something that falls into that.

Well I'm definitely looking forward to this and I agree with you on point 2, some people just ignore the Librarium and the resources they have avaliable to them on this site.

Also, do you have info on all the Chapters in your list Kurgan or are there any you haven't or can't find any info on?

Well I have all the info based on what I've read through (though I freely admit there are probably things I have missed). That is why I provided that materials list in the first post of this thread. Those are resources I have not got information from at this point. So if you have those and want to run through them for info, by all means please do so and added it to the appropriate Chapter entry once you see those posted.

Ok I have the list in place and the info that I have put together so feel free to start adding as you see fit.

The final post in that thread:

http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/index.p...t&p=2061780

Is general notes and other Space Marine related info. This could be helpful either for the Chapter list or just general Librarium Articles. Feel free to add to that as well.

In order to save folks the hassle of having to sort through two seperate groups updating 2 seperate threads I've moved the Chapter List thread to the AD forum. That is a forum shared by all staff level members for various board projects. You will still have the ability to edit posts within that thread to add info as necessary.

Yes, yes I know I'm obsessive and crazy, nevertheless if there's any info from any of those books that is required simply shoot me a PM and I can look it up. Actually I should have Traitors Hand around but I think my bro lost it, so I'm gonna try to get the Last Chancers and Cain Omnibus'. The only Blood Raven material I don't have is the short story printed in their Omnibus and I have the novels all seperate. Oh and that's just from the list Kurgan posted earlier, it's not entirely complete, I have the newest Cain book, Heroes of the Space Marines and there are a couple other books I noticed not on the list. Oh and the Inquisition War Omnibus isn't on the list, I got that too.

I also have the:

3rd Edition Rulebook

4th Edition BFM Rulebook

5th Edition BFBR Rulebook

3rd, 4th & 5th Edition SM Codexies

3rd & 4th Edition Blood Angels Codexies

3rd & 4th Edition Dark Angels Codexies

Witch Hunters Codex

Daemon Hunters Codex

3rd & 5th Edition Imperial Guard Codexies

Eye of Terror Codex

Armageddon Codex

3rd & 4th Edition Chaos Space Marines Codexies

Insignium Astartes

Index Astartes Volume III

Horus Heresy Artbook Volume III

Cities of Death Codex

Planestrike Supplement

Chapter Approved 2004

3rd Edition Tau Codex (Damocles Gulf Crusade Info)

And less than a dozen White Dwarf Magazines so my collection there isn't so good.

It is a shoulder pad image, painted marine and the fluff blurb of:

The Purge despise life in all it's forms, and have waged war against mankind and aliens alike for 3000 years, in an attempt to exterminate all life from the galaxy.

pg. 27

I can scan the images in later today for you.

Just putting together a potential announcement thread for posting in News, Index Astartes and Lib. Discussions. Nowhere near complete, just thought I'd make a start on it.

The Librarium's Chapter Datafile Project

The Librarium is currently launching a new project. The Chapter Datafile Project aims to present the B&C's users with 100% accurate and fully referenced information on all the chapters in official background. From the Yellowjackets to the Absolvers, we are putting together information on every single chapter from all eras of the game. What we plan to do can be seen here and here. We currently have a huge list of references and information to sort through to collect into articles. This project is another of the Librarium's initiatives to ensure the B&C continues towards its goal of becoming the premier Space Marine resource site.

So how can you help? Currently, there are some gaps in our collection of references. We are missing these sources:

Warhammer Monthly - entire run

Inferno Magazine - entire run

Boom Studios Black Templar Comics

Citadel Journal -- the full run

Rule Books:

  • Warhammer 40k 2nd edition rulebook
  • Codex Imperialis (part of the 2nd edition rule book set)

  • Ultra Marine - from the Ultra Marine game (the one with scouts)
  • Tyranid Attack
  • Death Wing Space Hulk Supplement
  • Genestealer Space Hulk Supplement
  • Space Marine -- EPIC game
  • Adeptus Titanicus
  • The square chit games like Horus Heresy and 3rd War for Armageddon

If you have these books, any relevant information on Space Marine chapters would be greatly appreciated. The type of refrences that we want to add to the document are things like famous battles, names of marines, names of tanks, recruiting worlds, interesting tidbits on Chapters (like how the Red Scorpions take their recruits the day they are born rather than at age 12 like most other Chapters). If you're not sure of whether or not the information is what we want, please post it up anyway. Better to be safe than sorry :D

When giving information, please cite fully the book/novel/codex and the relevant page number. We are aiming to provide full references for all Datafiles. Please be aware that information posted will not be added until confirmed by a second person.

Well like I said I have the majority of the novels and codexies and can start working through each for the details. First and foremost I just finished:

Emperor's Mercy by Henry Zou

In it is the Chapter the Stone Gauntlets. The only information given in the book is that their armor is described as "dusk-red" and that's it. The Chapter is only represented by a single envoy to the Imperial War Council and then he only appears once, early in the book to applaud the elderly Inquisitor's speach and later in the book to drop a couple words and that's it. No combat, no history, no nadda.

There's also a bit about a Chaos Space Marine Warband called the Blood Gorgons but... eh.

We can give this a go Sigs but we tried it that way once before. Got maybe 2 dozen responses and then nothing. Hence why I started doing it on my own.

The post can double as an appeal for whatever help is available and an announcement of our plans to blow Lexicanum out of the water.

Has the marine got a name? And is there any indication that they're involved in the campaign or were they drafted in just to applaud the Inquisitor :HQ:

Bad fluff or too little?

What I posted was all the info there was, other than him simply being an envoy to the "Council of Conclusions" aka the Medina War Council, he has no name, no other descriptions, no other marines are mentioned and he has less than a sentence worth of dialogue. The Blood Gorgons get a few mentions as participating in the final Warzone but the Stone Gauntlets... nothing. I would have thought they would take part of the final blitz to kill the Chaos Warlord or something but... nope. It's unclear what a marine was doing there and if there was a Company from that Chapter, where they were or what they were doing.

So yea they were drafted just to applaud the Inquisitor it seems.

Bad fluff or too little?

A bit of both, they're just there to be referenced a couple times in passing and for one of them to chase a couple of the Inquisitors for a short combat scene but no background is given and the only bit about appearance is various vague descriptions about red armor but other than that there's only a short mention about "feeding" in context on the flesh of people.

Anyway I'm going to be in PA till Thursday, when I get back I'll start with the Anthologies and go through them for relevant Marine Material and start posting it here I suppose. Then I'll get to the longer novels. Re-reading everything is probably not gonna be practical but finding some of the more obscure references that were just a sentence in some books may be difficult then. I remember most of the books that have marine Chapters referenced but not all...
