ODM returns

Here's my new project. Let's peak inside the door. What could it be?

Why it's my DA Stormraven of course. Will it ever see the playing field? Does it really matter?

Here's the first WIP shot. I did the interior's lighting before assembly, hence the red spray paint. Anyway, it'll be a gradual project, but I have to say assembly got me quite excited. the kit really fits together well.

Looking at them again – they remind me of Owen Rees' near-black DA. D'you remember them?

Cheers

I

Do we remember that army... Here is Owen's first DA army - Strike Force Resolution - that debuted in the WD Bat rep against necrons, where he used the "Weaken Resolve" combined with a land speeder and other units to wipe out a large unit of something. The necrons got smashed I think.

ODM: You capacity to produce miniatures at such a prolific rate is the envy of any galactic dictator wanting to build another army of conquest. I have absolutely no idea how you manage to paint so well, so neatly and so very crisp in such short periods of time. me thinks you must suffer from bouts of mania when you get these done!! ^_^

As always i love the way your "Tweety Bird" ... er.... Stormraven.... is shaping up! Look forward to the finished product!^_^

Ah happy days... thanks for posting that link SG... that army was teh original inspiration for me choosing the DA. Strange, but even over the years very few come close to it.

Great stormraven ODM. Love the red inner glow.

Thanks Isiah.

Making a little progress now.

In order to close them up, I need to get the cockpits done. I got the pilot's cockpit and surrounding details done tonight. He's a Ravenwing Techmarine. Servitor will be tomorrow.

Here's a shot of what the nose cannon, sealed cockpit look like. The finished version will be green, but I do that last.

Now, the other bit I finished tonight was the front and back ramp. Here's how they look.

And finally, here's a shot of the Stormraven on the base, which is also done. Don't worry, it'll be green in the end.

I like it in the black as well. With some red detailing (to harken back to the original color scheme) and maybe some Ravenwing icons, looks like it would fit perfectly the way it is. Not to mention, you've already got the Ravenwing Tech-Marine.

While I agree that black would look good, it doesn't fit in with my idea for the way the heraldry works. In my head, the stormraven would come from the Chapter motor pool, like a thunderhawk, and not be from a specific company. And if it did come from a Company, it would have to be the 4th Company, as it's a transport vehicle, not really a gunship. In which case, it should be green.

I do however like the black look. As my Deathwing are black, I've painted their assigned landraiders black, and it gives a pretty good idea of how this thing would look in the end.

I'll think about it some more, and maybe stay away from working on any details that would force a decision until I'm happy with my answer.

Thanks Peter.

Here's the next progress. It's probably hard to tell, but I got a ton of work done in that I got all the metallic areas based and washed. This was a pain, but it's done. I'll paint the metallic highlights next, then it's on to the color stuff.

Looking good as always ODM.

I agree and would go with the Stormraven being assigned to the armoury (BA org chart says as much) - it may be a transport, but it is still named "gunship". Oddly enough, the BA have their Thunderhawks in a completely different spot, "Fleet Command". I like the treatment suggested above.

That said, wouldn't the Tech Marine also technically be part of the armoury? I could however see the armory providing the Ravenwing with Stormraven support and in that case it could have a Ravenwing pilot, but would he be a Tech Marine?

Yeah, I think it'll be Chapter Armory, so no company markings, just general DA ones, albeit with the campaign badge that appears on all my vehicles.

As for the techmarine, GW has the techmarine parts used for the pilot, so I switched them out for DA techmarine parts. Then I decided that the Techmarines with Ravenwing experience, or seconded to the Ravenwing for speeder maintenance, would be the best pilots, so added the Ravenwing element.

  • 2 weeks later...

Well, it's been a while. Real life has been very busy with me, but I've finally made some progress. Not much to see, but actually a bit of work done. All the metallics are highlighted and complete. I'll pick out all the details like lights and logos next, and then it'll start to look like something.

Thanks Isiah.

Here's the next update. I completed all the little details and icons. Next it's on to the main color painting.

And I finally decided what to name this bird.
