Legions grouped in concert

If you were an Imperial commander in 30K, what duos or trios would you put the Legions in to undo their foes and why?

For example, something Horus did was Death Guard as an anchor and either the Luna Wolves or Night Lords working off that position.

Your choices?

Horus usually teamed up two Legions that specialised in the same field, so that they would motivated to try to outdo each other. A different approach would be to team up two Legions with drastically different approaches so that they would complement each other, but it depends on what the specific task is. Seinding the Imperial Fists and the Word Bearers when you want a world taken quickly would probably not be the best approach.

I would say a trio consisting of either the Ultramarines, Luna Wolves or Emperor's Children as a balanced Legion, the Space Wolves or White Scars as an assault Legion and the Imperial Fists or Salamanders as a defensive Legion might be a well performing overall combination. One Legion specifically for strikes, one for defensive actions, and one to oversee the joint efforts.

Mix of Legions with different modus operendai

Anvil/Hammer mix so:

Death Guard/Night Lords

Ultramarines/ White Scars

Iron Warriors/Raven Guard

etc etc

Obviously all the Legions were capable of fighting in all arenas of combat (siege, hit and run, long range, close up, etc) but going with Legions renowned for certain kinds of fighting works. For the tactically versatile legions, mix and match to hearts content. Everything dies in the end.

The Lion's Dark Angels for their masterful tactics working in concert with the Raven Guard's precision strikes and the Space Wolves as the unstoppable sledgehammer! Awesome.

With the DA anchoring and directing the assault, the RG crippling the enemy's supplies tearing out the heart whilst the SW are the killing blow straight up the centre. The Deathwing and Ravenwing would be a valuable supplement to either the RG or the SW.

Either that or Death Guard, White Scars and Luna Wolves.

can't you just send all the legions? :P I wonder how the enemy would react at the sight of 18 legions of Astarted and 18 Primarchs

more seriously though I'd say Night Lords, Raven Guard, White Scars, Alpha Legion. surgical strikes from every side and even inside ;)

I'm with Raven Guard, Night Lords, and Thousand Sons.

Reason being your making your opponent piss themselves in 3 different ways. One through attacking at any time in any spot, another through just plain scare tactics and the last through otherworldly powers that can summon scary apparitions or turn your soldiers into piles of bone, or against one another.

Duo wise, Ravens and Alpha Legion. They're both so stealthy its amazing. You'd lose the war before you even knew you were fighting.

I'm going with Iron Warriors, Death Guard, and Night Lords. The Iron Warriors would begin and support the siege, Death Guard to compose the main force driving the foe into hiding, while the Night Lords began a decisive and deadly attack from everywhere else. Meyham!!!

To take a world I wanted to integrate, my ideal combination would be:

1. Iron Warriors or Imperial Fists to take the major strongholds and act as an 'anvil' to crush any opposing force sent to attack them

2. The Alpha Legion to disrupt the enemy's war effort and bring them down into chaos, thus stopping them from bringing overwhelming force to break the 'anvil' legion or close down the White Scars.

3. White Scars to compliment the other two by mounting fast attacks of oppertunity on targets left vulnerable by the Alphas. These guys could hit supply convoys, reinforcements and isolated/weak locations.

4. Blood Angels/Space Wolves Once the other three have broken the back of the resistance, this legion would make a devastating final attack from orbit supported by the other elements to bring the enemy into submission

On the other hand, if I wanted to destroy a world utterly I'd just unleash the Night Lords, Alphas, World Eaters and later-stage Word Bearers and fiddle whilst it burned.

If I was to pick the forces I wanted to defend my fortress I'd take the Fists, Iron Warriors, Space Wolves and Emperor's Children

LOL Primarch egos would probably make that more trouble than it was worth

This would be my perfect mix. ;)

Imperial Fists - To bring down any fortifications and stop dead any counter attacks from an enemy.

Luna Wolves - Overall the best Legion during the Great Crusade. Would be used for devestating surgical strikes and overall command.

Blood Angels - To break the enemy utterly, when combined with the Luna Wolves, plus Sanguinius keeps Horus grounded.

One Legion specifically for strikes, one for defensive actions, and one to oversee the joint efforts.

Exactly. :D
