BA Army Expansion + Chapter Fortress

Good morning there!

AM, your minis look awesome. Your yellow is extremely smooth, the gems look great and the poses of your marines is fitting perfectly. :(

A question, if you don´t mind: Did you use a brush or a pen(or something alike) for the writing on the dread´s banner? I´ve tried to write on those banners for a thousand times, but I´ve never been successful or even close to your work. Thanks!

Snorri

Cheers for the positive comments lads, much appreciated.

Chop chop!

I see you have the painting whip today then  They're definitely coming: Baal Pred in a week or so; Tac upgrades are practically done along with the Jump Priest but my pics are reliant on the generosity of a mate with a decent camera...

I originally thought DC parts on Regular jump troups would be too much but you've proved me wrong! You have a great assortment of arms helms chests but lack of shoulderpads and legs are the perfect mix.
Looking great as always! Not tooooo much bling-bling, just how I like 'em :)

For me you both hit the nail on the head - trying to get a balance with the new bling. It's been helped by having to go back to my original models and add replacement parts here and there, and sometimes the original glue bond is so strong that it inadvertantly prevents me from going over the top :D

And you're dread, everytime I see it :eek

Blueprints for his "brother" have now been drawn up and completed, and I'm just negotiating with all the other men and vehicles that are waiting to get done for a time slot for him. My painting schedule for the next couple of months is dictated by a couple of local tournaments, so you'll also see a Jump Libby, some Dread part conversions and some de-packed DC and Chaplain too. After that, I have a bit more flexibility as to what to do next...

Hey Snorri,

All my lettering (banners, scrolls etc) is done with a GW standard brush, and always one with a good tip. For the larger stuff, like the Dread banner, I write the text on a piece of masking tape the same length and size as the bit that's going to be painted, and I stick it on the model as close to the scroll as possible to use as a template. This helps with getting the letters in the right place and of the right size.

I start by doing the main lines of the lettering, not too thick usually, but enough to get the word down. After that, it's just a question of thickening the lines as you want them, and applying the serifs to the ends. I find I sometimes make a mistake with some of the straight lines and curves of the letters, so I usually touch them up with Bleached Bone - which helps to brighten the lettered area and it defines the words more as well.

For "older" scroll work I usually letter in Scorched Brown, but the DC Dread banner was done with Chaos Black.

Cheers for the positive comments.

Thanks for sharing that, AM. Will try this as soon as possible.

Ok, I seriously don't know what's up with our club basement but it must suffer from localised warp storms or something. Every time we take photos the "feel" of them comes out totally different from the last time... but that's probably something to do with the lighting being reasonable at best, and a bag of rotting Nurgle testicles at worst

Anyway, some more update pics of finished stuff more or less.

2nd Company, 4th Tac Squad:

The regular guy was actually done before the new releases so sadly he doesn't share the bling, and I haven't thought how to change him yet. The Sgt still needs a back banner but I'll do that after a couple of local tournaments are done. I particularly like the leg armour of the Meltagunner as the blood drop matches the squad marking really well.

WIP JP Sanguinary Priest:

He's actually finished now but this is as far as I got when I had the chance to have the photos done. He looks pretty wicked with his JP on, and I'll post another pic at a later date. It's a bummer the lighting is so poor as the Priest and the Tac Sgt in particular, look a lot smoother and pop a lot more in real life. They're close to some of the best stuff I've done to-date.

I was trying to mimic the armour style and iconography of the original Corbulo model, and may continue with that when further Priests are added.

Baal Pred:

No way near as good as Picster's awesome Baal Pred (by which all future Baal Preds should be measured :D ), but I'm pretty chuffed with it.

Next up is a current Dread sporting a brand new Frag Cannon conversion (and CCW), a JP Librarian conversion, and hopefully I'll have time to finish off my DC Dread Drop Pod...

(here's the top-down pic I finally got done, showing the saltires on the shoulder armour...)

Thanks for looking and comments always welcome.

It's all great, but I'm not too sure about how great the moldy stuff on the Baal works.

^_^ It's meant to be mud, but it's the one area I didn't put a great deal of effort in. It looks a little more coherent first hand, and not quite so green-ish as the pictures show, but again the lighting dulls a lot of stuff like highlights and so on. It's not mould - we look after our vehicles

They're close to some of the best stuff I've done to-date.

Jeez Man!!! These models are smokin hot.

Thank the Emperor, for my eyes would burn if your club's lighting was any better.

Really great stuff.

also,

I think if you blended more staining and weathering into the armour around the moss on the Baal (maybe some drybrushing is all it needs, spreading/ streaking it out a little more would soften the texture. Right now the mud seems a bit chunky.

Cheers DoD, and believe it or not, there is some drybrushing around the muddied areas. You're right though, it probably needs a bit more work than I've given it so I'll go back to it at some point soon. It's why I always favoured a clean look to my models as I haven't really got weathering and battle damage down yet to a decent enough standard. I keep saying I'll dedicate some time to getting better at it, but the next project then calls to me like the spirit of the Primarch ;)

Appreciate the advice.

Looking really good the only thing I don't like about yoru Baal is that its got all that bud but no paint chipping seems a bit wierd.

A muddied battlefield wouldn't automatically cause chipping to the paintwork, but I see what you're saying. I'll give the area some more attention after I've got one or two other things out the way.

  • 1 month later...

Ok, after a bit of a delay, here's some pics of new and completed stuff. First up, Sanguinary Priest Brother Targal with JP, finally finished.

Next, Brother Librarian Koris, with JP. The Sanguinary Guard Angelus Bolter is a counts-as Bolt Pistol, and the top of the staff came from the Sanguinary Guard Chapter Banner.

5-man DC Squad, without JPs, as I was trying to eke out as many points as possible for my recent tourney list. I decided to mix and match a bit more with the Sang Guard box set and I'm quite happy with the results.

Brother Amael.

Bloody Hell your stuff is awesome!

Quick few questions:

1. Where is the BA metal big thingy from which is on the Dreads base?

2. How did you top the standards staff (dread angel thing)

3. The 4th Squad Sergeant. HIS CHAINMAIL IS AWSESOMELY MAGNIFICENT! Did you make it yourself or is it a part.

Really diggin your stuff m8, keep it up!

Many thanks :)

1 - It's an OOP FW scenic base, which I picked up on eBay.

2 - It's from the WFB Empire General kit, with some DA helmet wings, an Eldar Singing Spear tip, and a blood drop from the old Lemartes model, converted with it.

3 - Definitely not my work, my GSing skills suck. It's part of the model and he was a limited edition Gamesday model.

Dude! If I had been drinkin beer at the moment I saw the DC it would now be dribbling down my beard and into my crotch!

That power sword is just awesome in particular! How did you do that?

   Genius!

It's basically 5 colours, straight-up, with no washes, and thankfully the part itself is pretty forgiving in terms of getting decent edges and whatnot.

- Regal Blue all over.

- 1:1 Regal Blue / Ultramarines Blue to start defining the "light'" areas. I try to keep the paint quite thin and fluid to try and blend the colour better. I usually also start with a quick drybrush of each colour over the raised parts before doing the blending.

- Ultramarines Blue, and covering less of the "light" area than before. Thin and fluid again.

- 1:1 Ultramarines Blue / Space Wolf Grey, as above but less of the area again and with an initial drybrush (edges only).

- Space Wolf Grey, as before.

- A very light Skull White drybrush to the extreme tip and any other extreme edge to finish off. This bit is very minimal.

It can be tricky doing it without overlapping onto a previous layer, so I often have to touch up with a VERY thin bit of the preceeding colour to cover blemishes and smudges. Takes me a while ;)

Hope that makes sense...
