Wraiths of Darkness

Recommended Posts

On the colour schemes, I'm not quite getting a 'wraith'-ey enough feel to be honest. I always pictured the concept of a wraith to be somewhat formless, foreboding evil rather than any sort of solid foe. Your colour schemes smack too much of a regular marine chapter.

Couple of questions I'd ask are why you chose those particular colour schemes, why they have the one shoulder pad lighter and why aren't they using traitor equipment if they are actually 'chaos marines'?

Well, the Chaos Marine new painter isn't up yet. I would use the one they have, but it isn't the new tech that was designed to replace it.

You are right on the concept of a Wraith. However, these are Chaos Marines. They still need a color scheme, just because they can teleport doesn't mean they can turn invisible!

The one shoulderpad is lighter to provide contrast to the pure black symbol that I can't apply to the marine.

I chose the color schemes because they were a combination of 'dark' and 'blood' feels. Well, the golden yellow was a poor move, obviously, but still.

Honestly when I think of a wraith I don't get a colour, and I certainly don't get the idea of blood.

To me a wraith is more of an unearthly life-sapping force or entity rather than anything more traditionally macabre like brutal, bloody murder.

The only reason I am making a song and dance about the colours is that the Wraiths personality is so intrinsically linked to this concept of wraith-ness. It's also something very strongly linked to a chapter or legions personality in Astartes tradition. Look at the Blood Angels, the Night Lords, Crimson Fists and so on and so forth.

Marines, even Chaos Marines wear their beliefs, personality and chapter-character on their sleeves, or more accurately on their powered armour. It's less about what 'looks good' and more about an image that sums up the chapters character and who they are in a glance.

Possibly a light grey-blue, a bit like the Space Wolves colour.

Only thing is, that's a bit like the Space Wolves colour, although I'm sure different trim and perhaps parts of the armour in light green or grey will make the wraiths look very different.

I'd run up a couple of previews and shoot them past you, but I haven't got enough time right now, and am going to be occupied with family for the next couple of days. :)

I think a cross between the 2nd and 3rd. I always saw them as a ethereal greeny-grey colour. Very pale.

Seems I got it pretty close then :P

Anybody else have thoughts?

That's one way of doing it. However, I was thinking of more of a grey kind of colour:

I was thinking in terms of a cross between The Auditors in some of Terry Pratchetts' books and the Dementors from Harry Potter - grey, that gives a sense of no warmth, colour or indeed anything. Almost as if just seeing them would suck your soul out.

Not sure if anyone agrees though ^_^

I agree, but there is enough Black color schemes already.

In my opinion I think people are leaning too heavily on just the Wraith angle and hitting it too hard with a "ghost marine" view (if anyone remembers the Ghost marines painted turquoise in one of White Dwarf's articles a few years back).

Too me Wraith lends itself allot more to a lack of colour, or at the very least just a hint of it. Also I think dismissing grey as a possibility just because there are too many black chapters is kinda weird (grey isn't black).

So my two new suggestions:

First one that maintains the ghostly feel using a light blueish grey plus silver (silver fits wraith in comparison to gold which doesn't) with a few bits of black to darken the scheme without overwhelming it.

Astronomican Grey + Silver + Chaos Black

csm.php?bpe=89A9B3&bpj=202020&bp=89A9B3&bpc=202020&bpn=C5CAD1&hdt=89A9B3&hrn=202020&hdm=89A9B3&hdl=89A9B3&ey=31D63F&er=89A9B3&pi=8A8A8A&nk=89A9B3&ch=89A9B3&abs=89A9B3&bt=89A9B3&btd=202020&cod=89A9B3&ull=89A9B3&lll=202020&lft=202020&url=89A9B3&lrl=202020&rft=202020&slt=C5CAD1&sli=202020&srt=C5CAD1&sri=202020&ula=89A9B3&lel=89A9B3&lla=89A9B3&lh=89A9B3&ura=89A9B3&rel=89A9B3&rla=89A9B3&rh=89A9B3&ri=89A9B3&tr=C5CAD1&bg=FFFFFF&rb=212121&gr=8A8A8A&grid=TRUE&

Second a much darker but still blueish grey that still maintains a "wraithy" feel while also lending well to the Darkness angle, and again with black pieces added to break it up from just being a grey and silver scheme whilst still maintaining the overall theme.

Adeptus Battlegrey + Silver + Chaos Black

csm.php?bpe=4F5369&bpj=202020&bp=4F5369&bpc=202020&bpn=C5CAD1&hdt=4F5369&hrn=202020&hdm=4F5369&hdl=4F5369&ey=31D63F&er=4F5369&pi=8A8A8A&nk=4F5369&ch=4F5369&abs=4F5369&bt=4F5369&btd=C5CAD1&cod=4F5369&ull=4F5369&lll=202020&lft=202020&url=4F5369&lrl=202020&rft=202020&slt=C5CAD1&sli=202020&srt=C5CAD1&sri=202020&ula=4F5369&lel=4F5369&lla=4F5369&lh=4F5369&ura=4F5369&rel=4F5369&rla=4F5369&rh=4F5369&ri=C5CAD1&tr=C5CAD1&bg=FFFFFF&rb=212121&gr=8A8A8A&grid=TRUE&

With new painter and slight modifications.

You know when I make those schemes I have the new painter open and I do try my absolute best to mimic the colour shown on the new painter on the Chaos painter.

But whatever. :)

I'm back! I know you guys missed me so much... :teehee:

Heru - I'm not saying that you did a bad job or anything, it's just that the New Painter was put there to replace it for a reason. I really do appreciate your contributions - you've come up with the best schemes for the Wraiths so far. Please, I apoligize if I have caused any offence.

Will work on the Wraiths over the next couple of days.

You know, that second scheme Heru posted is awesome - while the first one is more wraithlike, the other one just looks like a mercenary.

On a different note - DAT, I thought you weren't so big on bright colours, man. What's with the luminescent turquoise?

I know the new shaders on the new set of painters is supposed to replace the old ones, but the Chaos painter isn't updated yet, and still despite lacking the new shaders, the Chaos painter is still the only painter that can really show how the colours overall work on Chaos armour.

(Lacking all the extra trim detailing, and with a ruddy big chest eagle - thus the colours don't complete properly and the metalics don't make as much sense)
