Scythes of the Emperor and other actual scale bits...

Doghouse

Recommended Posts

the new "Legends of the Space Marine" book has a short story with some new background material for the scythes, it's a cracking read you should check it out.

i'm a huge scythes fan myself since the days of advanced space crusade <_<

Yay! Doghouse is back! ;)

This is awesome stuff you've got here...what? you're doing 'nids as well? Wohooo!! :D I'm suscribing to this thread right away!! :D

Keep up the godly work! ^_^

Cheers guys! :)

Paladin7221: Definitely mate. :( I may do them in a black and yellow scheme similar to the Scythes but with red berets as I think that might look pretty cool and distance them from regular storm troopers a little.

Cornelias: Cheers for the tip mate. Funnily enough I stumbled across Vash113's thread in another forum here on B&C with the info so need to read that story now.

For the game on the day the scenario was going to be a single Scythes strike cruiser comes to the rescue but is too late emerging in the midst of the destruction of their home world.

As they emerge from the warp guns blazing they clip a hive nod ship. With the survivors fighting for their lives on Miral the newly arrived marines attempt to rescue their brothers the psychic distress cries of the wounded hive ship begin to interfere with the strike cruisers systems shutting them down.

Whilst a small force is dispatch via thunder hawks to aid their brothers on Miral a strike force of Scythes and Inquisitorial Storm Troopers attempt to board the wounded beast via boarding torpedo and destroy it's energy cortex so that their Strike Cruiser can escape.

Battle-Brother Ludovic: Ah but not just nids, there will be zombie like mind slave Orks and Scythes marines that have become infected hosts for all manner of nasty parasites and grubs. Think along the lines of the Flood in Halo and that should give you some idea of what I'm doing with them.

I'll post some pictures of the zombie marines here at some point when I get start on them but the orks will be in a thread elsewhere being that they are foul xenos. :FA:

The hive ship itself should be pretty impressive as well with all manner or ducts, corridors and digestion pits.

beautiful conversions and painting... before getting my SW army I was surfing the net for several sources of info about painting, conversions (I´ve been in this hobby for years but never 40k)..and one that more impressed me was your posts and tutorials about truescale marines, conversions etc, Doghouse ...so for me is a pleasure to hear from you again.. I´ll follow this plog.

I´m going to make my SW a bit taller and slender than the bulky GW ones, but sure not as amazing as yours...

Thanks mate. :D

If you start a thread I'll be sure to check it out. ;)

Just a quick update of sorts, I'm currently updating the Actual Scale tutorial right now as I work on the first squad so any one that is interested can check it out in the tutorials section. ;)

Edit for link: http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/index.p...p;#entry2379060

Nice one I checked it out earlier and left some comments. Very nice work mate. ;)

I'm on to the next marine now which I'm using to update the tutorial at the same time.

Actual scale marines are an excellent opportunity to create every model as a character in it's own right. This guy will be the veteran of the squad that leads the second combat squad when the squad splits before battle.

As the Scythes of the Emperor are reduced to a single battle company I'm making him into a veteran of the first company and will be giving him a white helmet to reflect this. I'll also be leaving the crux terminatus on the shoulder pad.

I still have to bulk out the greaves and torso a little more before I can start adding the arms.

Quick update

Got the bulk of the model in place now and will begin sculpting the chest detail before moving onto the arms. The bits of plasticard on the feet will be trimmed to fit the soles of the feet once it's dry.

Thanks mate! :(

I haven't read the Heart of Rage yet but I'd imagine that was the case. In ASC mind slaves are captured prey that are host to a small parasite that burrows into the brain stem of the victim which allows the hive mind to control them.

For those that are interested you can follow the progress of the xenos element of the project it can be found here:

For some reason it won't let me link directly to the thread which is a little annoying but if you take a look in the project logs forum and it'll be in there under Advanced Space Crusade Project.

Quick update

Well the Actual Scale tutorial is now finished but I will no doubt go back and clarify a few points along with refining a few techniques but there is enough there now to help you make your own Actual Scale marines.

Made a little more progress on the veteran.

Edit: Forgot to mention that for the 40k side of the project that will hopefully evolve into an army I will be using Codex: Space Wolves. The idea behind this is that I think that it is the best way to represent them and I have an excellent idea for a HQ unit to lead them.

As always great work Doghouse.

as always looking great man, glad to see we both returned to the fold ;)

really loving the way these are coming out, you plan to do anything charging or similar? could be rather cool with such bulky marines ^_^

looking forward to seeing more painted!

Cheers guys! ^_^

Battle-Brother Ludovic: For the yellow I start off with Tau Sept Ochre for the base coat. I then add a little skull white, something like an eighty/twenty mix of Tau Sept Ochre and skull white, leaving the base coat in the recesses. I then use really watered down Scorched brown in the recesses and along the underside areas with Gryphonne Sepia wash to create some shading.

Towards the edges I then use a sixty/forty mix of Tau Sept Ochre and Skull white before finally highlighting with a forty/sixty mix of the same. It's pretty much adding more white to the base coat and shading with brown washes.

It gives it a sort of golden look which works really well if you prefer grittier looking colours.

Keyoz Devastrius: Cheers for that mate. No idea why it wouldn't let me link directly to the thread, probably a browser issue on my part. ;)

Blindhamster: Yeah definitely, great to see you back again mate. ASC is pretty much creeping around in corridors without much in terms of wide open spaces and then sudden bursts of rather brutal combat so I'll be trying to get some sort of SWAT type advancing poses going on as I progress.

Cheers mate!

A belated congrats on the win as well mate. :)

Quick update

I've added a Mk VII style trim to the shoulder pads but not sure if I like it or not. What I'm thinking might be a better way of doing the shoulder pads is just to remove the bit that sticks out on the bottom edge of the terminator pads rather than muck about with all this GS work. The main problem with using terminator pads is that they may seem like a great idea but the problem is that they aren't really the right shape as they are rounder and flatter than the regular marine shoulder pads.

Thanks mate! :tu:

Over the years I've had loads of people as for advice on how to build these guys but most are put off by the green stuff work.

As a result few try to make them. ;)

Now I have taken this all on board and updated the tutorial so that anyone of any skill level can build one in less than half an hour and have posted this in the tutorial here:

http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/index.p...p;#entry2382277

Whilst waiting on some bits to cure I have managed to make a start on the Mk I dreadnought.

Most will have probably seen the Contemptor pattern armed with two close combat arms and two twin linked bolters, which in rogue trader days also had a jump pack and a force field. I'll be making a version of the Fury or Furibundus pattern Imperial Battle Armour as it was originally known but with a twin linked lascannon.

I've begun to knock together a basic armature using foam which I will sculpt over to form the dred. I've rescaled it to accommodate an actual scale marine, I will be using the smaller legs of the two variants that were used.

Great stuff mate.. as always :)

Love the big bulky feeling these guys have to them, and the colour-scheme looks really nice.

And about the latest pic:.. :eek Holy :cuss !! Going to be sweet ^_^

Deff keeping an eye on the progress here.

Cheers!

Thanks mate! :P

I know what you mean, the RT era dreadnought is one of my all time favourite models and the chance to make an updated version was too good to pass.

Got a bit more done and he's starting to slowly take shape. I seriously can't wait to start the GS work on him now.
