Scythes of the Emperor and other actual scale bits...

I take it you approve then?

Got some more done. It looks overly simple at the moment but once it gets going it will look the business. ;)

Just got the arm to build now then I can begin sculpting once a few other bits are out of the way on other models. The lascannon arm will be based on the original design as close I can get it but with two barrels on the end.

I've hit a bit of a snag with the dreadnought. As I've been doing it from memory I decided to see how it measured up against the real thing. As you can see below I need to redo the legs and the armature for the lascannon.

I need to clean up a few other areas and also straighten the head and the back.

So I've removed the lascannon arm and begun cleaning up the torso. I've left the legs in place whilst the torso dries.

Having only come into the hobby 8 years ago, I have to admit, i'm liking seeing the old school stuff, and as always Doghouse you never fail to impress me! Just one question that I meant to ask you beforehand when you were doing your truescale marines - how long did it take you to be able to sculpt so well with the GS?

Edemia

Well I'm still learning but it's only fairly recently that it has really started to click into place. Having been involved in forty kay from day one we never had proper kits for stuff so conversions were a required skill. I guess I started with GS conversions about eight years ago, basically it was just filling before that and using stock parts.

My first proper venture in sculpting were my White Scorpions marines because I wanted plastic scouts which weren't available at the time and put berets on all my marines building an entire army in a week as you can see from these really dodgy pictures.

Which ultimately led to my first attempt at rescaling marines.

Over the years I've done bits and pieces and gradually built up to pretty much full sculpts.

Here's the log that started it all: http://pbase.com/doghouse

It's all about practice really, if I'd stuck at sculpting rather than bits and pieces I'd be a lot better now. Best way to improve is to start with conversions and build from there. It's just a matter of practice. :)

I've put some tips together in some bad quality youtube vids as well as you can see here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EExgS2uibUU

Thanks mate! :)

Got a bit more done and have begun working on the armature for the lascannon. I'm going to do a straight copy except for the extra barrel of the old one. I've added plastic rods for the arms and legs but in the case of the arms this will allow me to swap weapons as need so I'll probably make an assault cannon, old school missile launcher and maybe some bits to allow other variants like the Iron Clad.

The sculpting on the Dread is great but I hate the Dread type. (I'm talking about the metal one, btw.) I just don't like the style... :(

But anyway, that's just me. Otherwise, great work as usual :tu:

Cheers guys! ;)

Vodunius: What you have to remember is that it's an actual scale dred and even the regular dreadnoughts are bigger than the plastic kit. I used that same picture from the 40k compendium to work out the general size so an actual scale marine will fit inside. :jaw:

Battle-Brother Ludovic: Yeah it's a matter of preference really. At the time it was brilliant but it's incredibly dated by today's standards. Hopefully I'll be able to breath a little life back into the design. :tu:

Update

Got a bit more done. I've started on the legs and have started the armatures for the feet.

I've got some more done to the dreadnought in the meantime. The armature for the arm is now in place, it looks a little long but this will include the length of the hand.
