Trench Table

Wow, this things looks amazing. I don't know what impresses me more, the skill going into the project, or the speed at which you are getting it done. I can't wait to see how it progresses. Is the board going to get details like craters or is it going to stay largely flat, as we see it now? Looking forward to more!

Im just posting pics up as and when I can. It is not really in accordance to how done the table is... overall each 'step' takes about a day's work to finish, cept the walling. That too me about 3 days worth...plus/minus all the tiny errors and editing along the way. If you look closely, the table frame was done in mid july...

I have a lot of other terrain, such as craters, bunkers etc. I thought of having them built into the table, but then it would make it harder to use all the rest, its just going to be basic 'flat' sand...

Great work there madscuzzy!

As an Iron Warriors Lord this table screams Eternal Fortress. Love to see a pitched battle of IW versus IF on this one. Any battle would be great, carnage ensured with objectives in the middle. Planetstrike is a lot less attractive for attackers on this baby.

And I'll be backing up IronDuke at this one. The skill AND speed put in this project are way beyond most of us (I presume) on the board here can accomplish. Pffff, in the time you put this together I'm still struggling to get one (1) building/ruin finished.

Really like to see this one develop, I'm impressed!

Cheers

Fairly. They are about 1-2kg each, primarily due to the wooden frame and the resin. If made up entirely of foam it's fairly light, but I wanted the strength that the wood offered. If anything, it's more of the size than the weight that makes it unwieldy to carry around.

All in all, I have to admit it is a fairly fast project.

we mixed up a batch of PVA glue, sand colour to texture the surface

Not sure what you mean by sand colour, could you elaborate please? I may want to copy your technique there it seems to look good and be hard wearing.

Actually, a total of say 10kg is not THAT heavy taking into account the kind of board we are talking about.

But I agree, if you have to move it around it does seem a bit bulky... but hey, you've a garage so I guess it doesn't have to move that far :P

This year's Spain GD, a club made a trench table (all in 1 piece). I like your because its modular, but their effect was incredible! They even had a "landing beach" on one side... pretty much like Omaha.

If I remember I'll try to get some link if your interested :)

I am planning more trench designs, namely one with a larger trench or moat, so I can use a nice wide bridge to cross, and some slopes to use.

While the Realms of Battleboard is of the same height, the design doesn't mesh into this very well, but can be played together regardless, if you are not picky.

A friend did a singular long 8'x2' beach landing board before, but up to this day, I have never seen it used, or heard about it being used besides its initial launch. Not too keen on having this board go the route of the dodo, but I do want some options in the future.

Such an inspiring Board Madscuzzy. I've never seen one that looks so much like what I imagine one to be like.

Are you going to incorporate any Battle-damage into the Board? For example, Craters caused by Artillery or perhaps the odd area where an enter piece of the line has been turned to ruin by Artillery? Afterall, trenches cannot escape that potential fate!

Looking forward to more.

As the table will be modular, I'll be keeping stuff like the craters modular as well (I do have a number of them). This will allow me to run many variations of setup, such as placing the DA fortress etc. on them at leisure...:) Ill get pics up when its more done...:o

Oh and shady, the mix is pretty much just PVA glue, sand and some paint (cheap from an art craft store). It is mixed together. You can use PVA glue and sand, but I find that the paint acts as a different kind of binder as well, so it helps smoothen out the mix so its more manageable when applying. It acts almost like cement (not as hard though, thank goodness), but is pretty firm.

The final update. For all intents and purposes, the table is done. While it can always suffer OCDing, it is as done as it is for now...

'Suffer not the unpainted to live...'

I started by spraying the table black...

Then using white spray I lightly misted the table top down to create some quick highlighting and shade.

A liberal wash of a mix of black and sepia (FW artist inks + matt medium and water) pretty much set the base.

The ground area was painted brown+black.

Everything was later drybrushed(brown for the board, greys and khaki for the trench) for highlight. Quick and simple.

Tada!

And some inaugural games to break in the table (but also mainly to playtest the firing steps).

IG vs Marines. Tanks without dozers don't like the trench... and tanks with big plasma templates don't either. Cover saves FTW!

The steps were made from wood strips with plastic rod and rivets added to detail it. The texture was made using ceramic stucco.

This turned out well, and you did it very fast. Good work on the removeable firing steps. I've made mine fixed so far, but I had thought of using just crates and boxes made of resin that I'd acquired or just build some out of balsa. I can build stuff pretty good out of balsa. Consider this thread hyped or at least referenced on my blog. Gotta get back to working on my terrain but I have a lot of miniatures to paint too.

Again good job.

As said, the board looks fantastic, the firing steps are ingenious and very well executed. Did you varnish the tops of the trenches? because all those tanks rubbing over them can't be good for the paintjob.

  • 1 year later...
Once the walls were done, we mixed up a batch of PVA glue, sand colour to texture the surface. As this is a large scale project, we opted to go for a harder, stronger surface than the traditional apply-glue-then-flock method. There are some black areas. This is because we filled up the gaps with putty and textured paint to make the trench 'seamless' (figured since the parts were seamless in sixes, why not all the way?)

I am thinking about doing a similar project (although without the forgeworld bits). Could you please let me know what you used in the mix that you applied to the surface of the board? Is it just PVA glue, sand and paint or did you add anything else to it? Do you still have an idea of the ratio you used?
