Kildrech Crusade Modeling Diary

Thanks for all the comments guys, the army is approaching completion, only a couple dozen to go, and good thing to because I am starting to find it hard to keep motivated.

There are indeed a LOT of Forge world models in the army, I fell in love with the Mark II & III. The Iron armour is just rediculously awesome and I think it fits the BT ideology down to an absoloute t. Having the front armour bulked out and rear armour vulnerable it is the perfect fit for frontal charges and no retreat!

In total there are 50 Iron Armour models (4 x 10 man Crusader sqauds & 2 x 5 man Assault Troops squads), 15 Crusader Armour models (2 x 5 man Fire Support Squads with some alternate models, Lacannon, Plasma Cannon, Missile etc). In addition there are probably the equivilant of another 5 Iron armour models canabilised to make up various other models throughout the army. I have about 15 Iron armour left over which I will be selling.

All up I bought:

80 (16 packs) of Mk III Iron Armour

15 (3 packs) of Mk II Crusader Armour

1 Character Upgrade pack

3 Special Weapon packs

2 Storm Shields

2 Black Templar Dreadnoughts

4 Close Combat arms (in anticipation of a Furiuso update, and lo and behold the Durandal emerges!)

2 Lascannon arms

2 Assault cannon arms

5 Heavy bolter Razorback turrets

5 Lascannon razaorback turrets

3 Tempests

Effectively I was exceptionally lucky with the sale of some armies, I picked them up rediculously cheap some time ago and when I sold them they were in high demand and I made a lot of money on them. I set this money aside for my new Black Templar army. I worked out prices and numbers for plastic marines and wrote up the overall list of what I would need.

Then just as I was about to buy them, the Australian Dollar went through the roof and the British pound dropped through the floor. Effectively I was able to upgrade the entire army to Forge World equivilant for the same price that I had originally quoted for plastic. Since the money was already set aside, the army list set, I thought 'hell, why not' and decided to go the FW path.

There have been some downsides to the FW models, the poses are quite limited, the shoulder pads dont fit the decals on them, and the tabards arent easily attached. However what you get back in return (the medieval helmets, the studded armour, the massive shoulder pads) easily outweigh the cons.

From there I wanted to spice up the rest of the army (the terminators etc) and so started searching for some extra little bits for conversions and founf Maxmini. They have been fantastic to add a little bit of difference to the weapons and suchlike.

All in all it defintely wasnt a cheap army, but, I was luckier than most and it wasnt a crippling expensive one either. No regrets, and hopefully the painting will bring the Templar theme across to the models nicely.

So short answer, I guess, the army cost around 1,000 pounds (since I bought everything in sterling, including all the normal bits and suchlike), thats for everything, the vehicles and the infantry.

There are only a few things which I am thinking of adding, maybe some Drop Pods for my Dreadnoughts, maybe some attack bikes if I can get a good conversion (hate the GW SM bikes) and whatever new models are released in our next dex.

Cheers

all right, first test models are done, a Neophyte and Fire Support Initiate.

These were to test the colour scheme and general battle wear on the power armour as well as a few other little things.

I am pretty happy with the way the Neophyte head has turned out, I think it fits really well.

The Initiate is a Fire Support Initiate who is currently doing Penance (they are forbidden from carrying a CCW and must stand back and shoot as punishment), so he does not have any Crusder or Purity seals. Also we discovered that the GW decals do not actually fit on the FW pads, so I am trying to get measurements from the armourcast guys as to what their smallest Iron Cross decal measures, we need something about 3-4mm.

I was thinking of having the Purity seals with red and blue wax on the Crusader Initiates and Sword Brethren to add a little bit of colour to them.

Even so im not a big fan of Mk II and III just wow brother, wow!

I wish I coul paint like most of my brethren here, everytime i see you models im kinda ashamed for my stuff :D

Where are those capes from, you used for your plastic Sword Brethren?

Also sweet Crusadebanner!

For Sigismund, Dorn and the Emperor

Thanks for the compliments on the models, although I cannot take credit for the painting, I am absoloutely lousy with painting and did not want to ruin an expensive investment by dipping them in black paint. So they are being painted by someone who has done a fair bit of work for me and I trust his painting style, skill and interpretation.

Yeah I am a little annoyed that Forge World dont support bulk buyers in a better way, they wouldnt offer me any form of discount wwwhhhhhaaaat so ever. Considering I was going to buy what I did PLUS a full Death Korps of Krieg army all at the same time (probably around 2,500 pounds worth) I was hopeful that they would do something for me. Even if it was 5% off, man even if it was 2% off I would have been happy. But nope, nothing, not one pound. So they lost 1,500 pounds worth of sales in an instant.

Hopefully more pics of models coming over the next few days. I have been waiting on a final shipment of parts to finish my Sword Brethren, Terminators and Assault Troops off and hoping it will arrive today.

As for the cloaks on the Sword Brethren, they are the Commanders Cloak off the Commander kit. Picked up a heap of them from various ebay part sellers relatively cheap. Its unfortunate that they are all the same but I think they look much better than my attempts to Green Stuff the back part of the tabard myself.

Oh I bought them, I would be a heretic otherwise!

Just they haven't been painted yet because I was hoping to build some custom arms but that never happened, so I have forwarded the regular arms plus some FW DCCW arms through to Steve for painting. I am looking forrward to these two getting done as I reckon the FW BT dread done as Druandal's will look awesome!

Ι Want to complete your crusade fleet..... brother!

Would be nice looking....and sure deadly!

The only thing missing from the list which I really want to get eventually are some drop pods. But they are on the cards, pending some sales of my other gear. I am probably going to get two to start with (for my Dreads) and then maybe get some more if I find I like the drop pod attack method.

I was tossing up between the Forge World Dreadnought Drop Pods, or get the standard GW Drop Pods and then get the Pre-Heresy style drop pod add ons from Chapter house, foudn here.

I am thinking the Chapterhouse drop pod doors would fit real nicely with the style of the armour, the only thing is whether you can make the GW Drop Pods to fit Dreadnoughts? Anybody know?

The main banner has been completed and I recieved it in the post this morning. Going to be attaching it to the Emperor's champion as soon as I get home to see how it looks and take a photo, but I couldnt wait and had to post it here. It has turned out exactly how I wanted it and all credit to duskfrost for such a superb intepretation of such an abstract request!!

Have you given any thought to adding a Chaplin dreadnought? Rules in IA Apoc' Two. I am considering using one of the furioso's.

My gaming group isnt a big believer of IA rules as it opens a bit of a can of worms, we also don't use unique/named characters/units. They have given me the go for the Durandal, and if the new codex ever comes out with additional style Dreads than I will probably get another few.

Very little has been done, lots of stuff in life interrupting and stiiiill waiting on a parcel form the states with the last of the bits.

However I have done my Assault Troops and they have changed since the original inception. Rather than using BT chainsword I have equipped them all with relic blades in a similar vein to my neophytes, they will be painted as standard steel weapons. However the power weapon will be the same blade but held with a power fist like the Initiates and will be painted as a power weapon. There arent any chains either on the weapons, intentionally done, I didnt think it suited jump pack troops to have chains hanging off them or tabards.

I am also getting Storm Shields for them in the form of the Bretonnian Men at arms shields, hoping to have a nice riot shield look. Still waiting on them to arrive though.

Just a recent update.... Looking at getting the below Keep to accompany the Crusade and the fluff of the Crusade which revolves around the Crusade reactivating a Keep and being besieged.
