Their home world lost to flames, the Sons of Pyron crusade to rid the Imperium of Man of all manner of savage, impure, beasts. Not satisfied to simply drive Chaos from their beloved Imperium, the Sons strive to cleanse it with holy fire. They have pledged to burn all that stand against Holy Terra. Where the fire strikes next, only time can tell.

Chapter Badge


The Imperium of Man suffered great losses in the 35th Millennium. In response to the ever growing threat of Chaos and the great losses suffered by Imperial forces, the High Lords of Terra ordered several foundings to replenish the dwindling numbers of the Adeptus Astartes. Under these orders, the Adeptus Mechanicus set about to organize and institute these foundings.

As part of the 17th Founding, the Mortifactors were given the high honor of siring a new chapter of Space Marines. A training cadre was assembled and sent to the volcanic death world of Pyron. There they began the long process of turning the worthy few into Angels of Death, defenders of the Imperium.

On the border of Segmentums Tempestus and Ultima, and near the edge of the Imperium of Man, the volcanic world of Pyron had originally been settled by miners, hungry for the rich resources buried beneath its rocky surface. Soon they had been forgotten. Wars raged and chaos ruled. The miners survived by force of will alone. It was not an easy life.

When rediscovered, Pyron was mined out and had little to offer to the Imperium. To the Mortifactors, however, Pyron appeared to have everything a chapter of Space Marines needed. The surface was dotted with volcanoes spewing forth noxious gasses. These gases made life on the surface impossible, and the hard life in the numerous man-made subterranean chambers and tunnels of the old mines made of a population of stout and industrious people. Perfect candidates for recruitment.

Sons of Pyron Marine

For reasons long forgotten, the Pyronites had developed as a Matriarchal Society. Perhaps, in times long past, through combat or plague, the number, and in turn dominance, of men had faltered and fallen. For centuries women had ruled the different clans residing on Pyron and peace, at least internally, had been the result. The clans worked together to provide for the Pyronites, and in time of invasion, worked together for protection. Pyron itself was a brutal world and living was very difficult, but the Pyronites survived through these clan interactions.

When the training cadre arrived, the Pyronites saw them as a new round of invaders and their hearts were filled with suspicion and fear. They hid themselves from these huge armored men as they had the Orks that had plagued them for centuries. Perhaps in time, they thought, these men would simply move on as had all the others before. But they did no move on. The Space Marines set about to convert a large chamber to suit their needs, and improved the surrounding tunnel systems. They were on Pyron to stay.

In time, the Pyronites became bolder and, slowly at first, they began to make contact with the Space Marines. As the marines scouted and studied the local inhabitants, the Pyronites also gathered information on the universe around them. Tales of the Emperor, the Space Marines and the Imperium spread like wildfire through the population. Not only were they to know the protection the Space Marines would provide from the savage ones, what the Pyronites called the Orks that had plagued them for centuries, but their young would have the chance to join the Space Marines. A chance to have a better life then the hard one forced on them by Pyron and to become more than mortal seemed a great opportunity.

In time the fear of the Space Marines turned to acceptance and later to hope. Life on Pyron was hard and always would be, but now there was at least a chance for something better. It was this environment of hope that aided the training cadre in their recruitment efforts and their numbers grew rapidly.

Games of Fire

Only the strongest, smartest and most able could join and have a chance to become a part of the Chapter now to be known as the Sons of Pyron. Working with the Pyronite Elders, the games were established as an initial test for recruitment. They involved tests of strength, stamina and intelligence and would be difficult for most adults to complete, but only the young would take part in these games.

As a concession to the Elders, both boys and girls would be allowed to compete in the games, though only the boys that performed well would be considered for recruitment. Nonetheless, the Pyronite girls found honor and took pride in simply competing and even outperforming some of the boys. Of course, winning in the games was only the first of many test that prospective recruits would have to endure. The path to become a Son was a long and arduous one and few would find the strength and spirit to move on to the next phase and become Space Marine Initiates.

The Daughters of Pyron

Seeing how well the girls performed in the games gave Master Heronus, leader of the training cadre, a novel idea. The recruitment process for the Adeptus Astartes had always been dependent on letting a child's environment develop worthy recruits. It was a proven method and had always worked in the past, but Heronus saw no reason for it to be the only option.

Although the games and normal recruitment of boys remained the only way for the Sons to grow to a full chapter with any relative speed, Master Heronus began to put his idea to the test. If it succeeded, it would give the Sons an option no other chapter had, and if it failed it could easily be ended with no harm done. Heronus began taking worthy girls from the games into the growing number within the Sons training program. These girls would be taught combat, both hand to hand and ship to ship, and someday man the Sons' fleet of ships.

As the first of these girls began to reach maturity, Heronus moved on to the next phase of his plan by adding adult men to the games. The men who excelled in the games would of course not be eligible to become Space Marines, as they were much too old to take part in the conversion of their bodies using the geneseed, but they were perfect for Heronus' plan. Winning for these men gave them the opportunity to lay with the Daughters of Pyron. In this way, finding worthy recruits was no longer to be left to random environmental chance, for the first time since the Primarchs … Space Marines were bred from worthy parents and trained from birth to be ultimate warriors.

Both boys and girls were produced by these unions. By the time the Sons were up to full strength, with recruits raised in the conventional way, the first of the true Sons and Daughters of Pyron were ready for training.

Pyron's Sacrifice

The 36th through 38th Millenniums found the companies of the Sons spread through out two segmentums fighting the forces of Chaos. No battle was too small or too large, and the Sons reveled in combating the enemies of the Imperium. Late in the 38th Millennium Pyron once again found itself under attack by a large force of Orks. The Sons were wont to return to protect their home world, but duty had called them far away and they were forced to put out a general call for assistance for any chapter in the area.

By the time the first of the Sons companies were able to return, they found Pyron a smoldering rock devoid of life. It appeared as if every volcano had erupted at once. In orbit above their home world was an Imperial cruiser. Thinking the Imperial Navy had caused the destruction of their home world the Sons flew into a rage and prepared to attack them. Only the quick report by the Commander of the cruiser held their vengeance and revealed the truth.

Ruins of Pyron

A small Imperial task force had responded to the call for aide only to find Pyron in flames, its surface covered in molten lava. Messages intercepted from the fleeing Orks claimed the planet itself had pushed them back. Rather then fall into the hands of the savage ones, Pyron's volcanoes had all erupted at once. All that remained was a lifeless planet. The task force pursued the Orks, leaving only the cruiser to guard till the Sons return.

As more and more ships of the Sons returned, the crew of the cruiser were witness to the great lamentation of the marines. The Sons' Chapter Master, two full Reserve Companies, as well as many of their Scouts and the young Sons and Daughters still in training all had died defending the planet. It was only the intervention of Pyron itself that had finally stopped the Ork invasion. For a full week the Sons and Daughters wailed in sorrow over the loss of their brothers and sisters, their people, and their world. They vowed never to forget the great sacrifices all had given to stop the Orks.

After the time of weeping had ended, the Masters all gathered and it was decided that there would be no new home world for the Sons, for no other world could replace Pyron. The Master of the 1st Company assumed command of the Chapter and set it on a course of vengeance. Dividing the Sons' into five new companies, each with reserves and scouts, the new Chapter Master sent them out with two distinct missions. First, to destroy the alien forces that had caused the death of their home world, and second, to cleanse other worlds as Pyron had done … with fire.

Following the great sacrifice of Pyron, it became necessary for the Sons to find alternate worlds to recruit from. In the Chapter's crusade to battle Orks, two of the companies discovered worlds that, though they would never replace Pyron, would provide suitable adult males for the Games to continue.

The Feral World of Ryntor Secundus was first encountered by the 2nd Company as they chased a Warband of Orks from the Blood Axe Clan through the system. The Warband escaped after suffering great losses and splintering into much smaller groups.

The Sons returned to Ryntor Secundus, having taken note of it in their pursuit. The small planet was covered by lush grasslands and freshwater seas, it also swarmed with large reptilian creatures. The humans tribes of the grasslands had reverted to roughly Stone Age technology and hunted the reptiles for food. The Sons found it to be suitable for recruitment, and lay claim to the planet.

The native humans saw the Sons and Daughters as gods. The 2nd Company established a Savannah Fortress for their use, and the natives began to flock there to worship them. They also eagerly take part in the Games to be allowed to lay with the new goddesses.

The 5th Company discovered the Feudal World of Ulrati while searching for Orks. The numerous kingdoms were at constant war with each other, making for a large warrior population suitable for recruitment in the Games.

The Sons began building their fortress on the rocky slopes of one of the planets highest mountains between two of the larger kingdoms. Almost immediately they found themselves under attack by the native Warlords' armies. The Sons quickly established their dominance as Supreme Overlords of the planet, and made their official claim to Ulrati for recruitment.

The Sons did little to reform the warlike nature of the native inhabitants, they only claimed the mountain and valley below and forbade any fighting between the kingdoms on their lands. When their Mountain Fortress was complete, the Sons sent out proclamations to all the kingdoms announcing the Games. Warriors from all the kingdoms travel to the Games, competing in combat to win favor of the Sons and the chance to lay with the Daughters.

Aspirants that fail the tests to become Space Marines are considered impure and slain. The surviving Sons would become exceptional Space Marines and the Daughters would be the sisters and mothers of future generations of the chapter, as well as manning the fleet of the Sons of Pyron.

Sons of Pyron Veteran


For the most part, the belief system of the Sons of Pyron was spawned, in one way or another, from Pyron, its sacrifice, and the savage ones that caused its destruction.

The Sons of Pyron are quick to show compassion to other humans but equally as quick to crush the savage aliens and any that stand against the Imperium when they are encountered. They strive by their actions to mirror the purity of the Emperor. They also believe that sacrificing oneself for purity, as Pyron did, is a most honorable death. The Sons do not allow compromise on this matter, one is pure or one is to be cleansed.

The Time of Mourning

The anniversary of the Sacrifice of Pyron is a day of reverence for the Chapter. Those seeing a Son on this day will find them quiet and reserved with a solemn tear on their face. Duty seldom allows the Sons to morn in peace, and those finding themselves in combat against the Sons on this day, find the Sons of a single mind … purify with fire, without mercy.

The Impure

Having a nemesis that is anything but pure, not animal nor plant, has led the Sons to despise any form of impurity or alien. Hatred of the Orks has led the Sons to be severely Xenophobic, hating anything not human. Only the cleansing fire can rid the universe of the impure.

The Emperor holds the title of Most Pure in the beliefs of the Sons, and all strive to move closer to his example. The loyal Primarchs hold the next level of purity in their beliefs, and are called the Children of the Most Pure. They see themselves, and other Space Marines, as the Pure Ones. But some Chapters they find to be less then pure. Those that have fallen to Chaos are to be hunted and cleansed, and those whose geneseed has become tainted or warped are not above suspicion and to be watched closely.

The Cleansing Flame

Only the Cleansing Flame can remove the taint of Chaos and impurity. Whole populations under suspicion have found themselves facing the Cleansing Flame at the hands of the Sons of Pyron. Their fervent burning of the impure has made them a favored Chapter of Inquisitors desiring to see worlds cleansed by flame.

A Pure Body and Mind

Recruitment for the Sons has been refined to the point of perfection. Recruits are no longer found, they are bred and trained from birth to be ultimate warriors. Children born to the Daughters of Pyron are closely examined upon birth for any defect, physical or mental. Failed aspirants and those found impure are slain lest the impurity spread.

Throughout their lives, the Sons and Daughters are watched and tested. Impurity is not tolerated in any form. As a result, the Sons of Pyron are the most fit, the Daughters the most beautiful, and both are warriors beyond reproach.

The Honored Dead

As a Mortifactors successor, the Sons also continue to honor their brothers that fall in battle. The halls of the ships of the Sons fleet are lined with the honored dead. Chaplains preach to their marines that death will unite them with the Emperor. In death, the Sons believe that they are taken to the Halls of Victors and sit at the feast table of the Ultimate Warrior in the afterlife.

Due to their xenophobic nature, the Sons do not share the Mortifactors practice of taking the skulls of their enemies as they are seen to be impure and unworthy of such honor. The cleansing flame is all that they deserve, and all they receive.

Sons of Pyron Terminator Veteran


Since the original order to divide and hunt down the nemesis of the Sons, the separation has become a set in stone fact. Over the years the Reserves and Scouts were incorporated to become part of the five Battle Companies. The Sons of Pyron now exist as five Battle Companies of 200 marines. The Masters of the companies meet regularly to discuss tactics and the state of the Chapter, and though they are all ultimately commanded by the Chapter Master, they each operate independently in their search for the impure.

Though the Sons vowed never to have a home world to replace Pyron, the need for replacements has meant that two of the companies have taken planets as permanent bases for recruiting strong men to father future marines and train them till they are assigned to one of the Battle Companies.

Fleet based companies come to these two planets to be given fully trained Space Marines and Daughters of Pyron to crew their ships.

I - The First Company of the Sons of Pyron is commanded by the Chapter Master and aboard their Battle Barge, Strike Cruisers and support craft patrol the space around the burning husk of Pyron.

II - The Second Company of the Sons of Pyron maintains dominion over the Feral World of Ryntor Secundus in Segmentum Tempestus. Their Strike Cruisers and support craft patrol the space around the Ryntor system between Bakka and Colchis.

III - The Third Company of of the Sons of Pyron patrols the outer edges of the Imperium aboard their Battle Barge, Strike Cruisers and fleet of support craft.

IV - The Forth Company of the Sons of Pyron operates its Battle Barge, Strike Cruisers and fleet of support craft between Pyron and the border of Segmentum Solar.

V - The Fifth Company of the Sons of Pyron maintains dominion over the Feudal World of Ulrati in Segmentum Ultima. Their Strike Cruisers and support craft patrol the space around Ulrati between Colcha and Red Ox.

Young Daughters of Pyron train alongside their brothers who are destined to become Space Marines. The young women continue to train and as they mature begin to lay with the men who have excelled in the games to produce future Sons and Daughters of Pyron. After birthing two children, they are transferred to the fleet where they fill the role of the serfs of other chapters. Older women return to either Ryntor Secundus or Ulrati where they raise, and alongside their Space Marine counterparts, train the young ones.

Other then their preference for fire based weapons, the combat doctrine of the Sons of Pyron is dictated by the Codex Astartes and remains inline with other Space Marine Chapters.

The Geneseed of Roboute Guilliman by way of the Mortifactors was used to create the Sons of Pyron. It remains pure with no defects apparent.

“Let them burn!” The most used battle cry of the Sons relates to their belief that only fire can cleanse impurities from body and soul.

“For Pyron!” Another common battle cry deals with their reverence of the Sons' fallen home world.

EDIT: I like it, I reall do! And the idea of having the men and Daughters have children together to make stronger youths for the chapter is great. :wacko: The only thing is that Tyranids were not known until the end of the 41st Millenium. You have to find some other Xenos.

I'd volunteer the Blazing Sons if only for the fact that they are Blazing Sons where your guys are the Sons of Pyron, or fire, with extra fire heaped on top.

 

Though my guys hang out around the galactic north so it might not be terribly convenient. Everyone loves having their chapter tied to someone elses. Makes them feel like theirs is more legitimate. You might get a few more volunteers before the day is out and have half a crusade on your hands!

Well all the maps I've seen show Ultima on the right ... or east, and with Tempestus being beside them in a clockwise direction then that puts them south.

 

I'm looking at one of the maps that B&C has in the Making a DIY Chapter aids section.

Well maybe my guys are just straight 'up'. I don't know, I always thought of them being in the galactic north but I only had a vague idea of where that would be in reality. Time to put a pin in the map I think.

If I'm right, the 15th Founding was in mid to late M34. The 21st and 22nd Foundings were in M36.

This debate has been had before, but three battle barges seems like a lot. That's as many as the Chapters of Legend possess, and they're all ancient. I find it hard to believe that a later founding would possess more than two, and I think even two is stretching it. Battle Barges have enough power to rival Imperial Battleships, and are not something the AM just hands out. Indeed, a fleet of the size you are indicating your marines have is gonna make a lot of Navy Commanders nervous, and it treads the danger zone of the separation of powers.

The Lexicanum has a bit more info and shows the Dark Founding (13th Founding) happening early M36 and the Cursed Founding (21st Founding) happening in M36 as well. So it seems that, unless someone decided to number them out of order that the 14th through the 20th Foundings must also happen sometime in M36.

You're of course right, this debate has been going on for a long time. The Codex: Space Marines shows the model SM Chapter as having 3 Battle Barges and says that Crusading Chapters are sure to have more.

 

Since loosing their home world the Sons of Pyron are considered Crusading ... so the number is well in line.

I don't know about your hypothesis, that's an awful lot of Foundings for that one Millennium. Perhaps I could see the Lexicanum article you used?

 

I've looked at that B&C timeline before and just this morning. As I said, it has no clear dates on most of the Foundings.

If I'm right, the 15th Founding was in mid to late M34. The 21st and 22nd Foundings were in M36.

 

Okay, B&C has no clear dates on most of the Foundings. The Lexicanum has a bit more info and shows the Dark Founding (13th Founding) happening early M36 and the Cursed Founding (21st Founding) happening in M36 as well. So it seems that, unless someone decided to number them out of order that the 14th through the 20th Foundings must also happen sometime in M36.

I based my Founding dates off this: B&C Timeline (see post 3).

I don't know about your hypothesis, that's an awful lot of Foundings for that one Millennium. Perhaps I could see the Lexicanum article you used?

 

I've looked at that B&C timeline before and just this morning. As I said, it has no clear dates on most of the Foundings.
