Raven Guard Shadow Force Ovis :)

I didn't think it was possible, but with that subtle highlighting method these guys look even darker and more menacing than my Raven Guard, impressive B)

Thanks Master :P Actually in reality they're pretty close to yours (I've compared your photos to mine using black of the bases as reference colour); on the other hand it's all in the photo editing, I always tweak some levels/brightness/contrast controls to make them look decent, as I don't use flash, so between this and your monitor settings they can gain some extra grimdark menace alright :)

True, looking closely the black probably isn't much different but the way you've chosen to use black for the joints between armour and to use dull metallics for the chest eagles and so forth, compared to my metallic & white solution, does give them an even grimmer edge I feel. I've always painted my Marines in bright colours so I had to add some colour or go crazy but I like the result you've gotten with an even more limited palette than mine. As I said, it's nice and menacing, the way RG should be :o
Armour joints I paint actually also metallic, it just doesn't show in the pictures as they're mostly visible from the back. I used to paint them dark grey but finally decided to go for metallics. I know that "canon" chest eagles should be white, but dull metallic ones look much heavier and, as you've pointed out, give +10 grimdark :P Many of my friends tell me that my models look monochromatic and dull, in not exactly good way, but I've always liked them subdued. I think too much colour on Astartes models tends to make them look like spilled box of candy instead of a bunch of fanatical, humourless killers in half-ton powered armour :) It's a matter of scale - if they were a foot tall, you could get this badass heaviness out of them with realistic battle damage, airbrush techniques and extensive weathering, even if they were checkered in black-red-yellow :) On 1 inch models it's much trickier.

Lo and behold, Shadow Captain Korvydae himself!

This is the model that convinced me to collect Raven Guard, I just love the level of details on him and the almost steampunky machinery and tubings on his head. I have followed the color scheme from the FW website, only painted the jump pack all black because I hate painting white on black and simply had enough with what there is already. The face is not almost-white because first - I simply don't know how to paint it like this convincingly, second - he is pale enough to me.

As usual I can't get the colours right on the photos, so you've got to take me on my word when I'm saying that the edge highlights are way less subtle than it looks here. Also he shines a bit too much to my taste (Purity Seal), but not so much to risk ruining him with dull matte Army Painter spray with it's evil frosting tendencies.

Anyway, here it goes:

C&C welcome as usual.

Lovely :P

I might have liked a green laurel or something else to draw the eye a little more to all the lovely details at that level but it's a very well executed paint job for a cool model.

I think the face is fine, pale doesn't have to mean grey/white by any means and the eyes look good with whites too. Again, great job on a great model :D

New goodies courtesy of Librarium Painting Challenge ;)

First - terminator squad. I've employed a new highlighting technique - Adeptus Battlegrey applied on the very edges of armour and an ABG and Chaos Black mix on less accented edges. I think it brings out the textures without spoiling the shadow-matte effect.

Second - Rhino APC. I've made the top hatch operable, unfortunately one of the hinges broke while drilling, I had to replace it with GS and it didn't endure very long, so the right panel does not open smoothly all the way. On the bright side - I'm really happy with the battle damage and weathering effects, I wanted it to look like an armoured transport after some time in the field, not a plastic toy right out of the box (and I had to justyfy somehow buying all those FW weathering powders ;) )

Looking at it now I realize I forgot to put on smoke launchers, I'll have to fix it...

you have got lots of great stuff! :P

The Termies and Rhino have turned out really well Ovis, it's great to see you and RG2010 complete your vows and add to the ranks of the Raven Guard! I'll keep your Rhino in the back of my mind when I'm working on my RG Rhinos over the next few months, mine won't be weathered but you've done some lovely work on those FW RG parts that I'll be referencing when I do mine :)

It's been a while, but here's another update of my Shadow Force gallery. Raven Guard Sternguards, 3 combi-meltas and a heavy flamer. I didn't want to do it like everyone else and give them a termie HFlamer, because it looks to cumbersome to me. Instead I've decided to use standard imperial pattern heavy flamer - seeing as the IG uses normal flamers, bolters and even storm bolters identical as SM, I didn't see a reason for SM not to use IG heavy flamer. The promethium tube is made of a piece of rubber casing from a headphones cord.

A new one - Land Speeder Storm. I used only the pilot and the gunner because 1) I didn't like the other models (those troglodite faces!), 2) I wanted to keep it "empty" as a transport for whatever squad it will carry.

Both scouts have their gorilla jaws trimmed. I have also repositioned their heads a little back to give them necks; I used little balls of GS atop the torsos, which after pushing the heads into them made nice uniform collars, just as OOP metal scouts have. It really does wonders to them.

BTW - just out of curiosity, if I offered commision painting, would you be willing to try me?

Anyway:

Amazing paintjob, looks just perfect to me. :tu:

Beautiful. I like the little modelling details as well, such as that all beakie head tactical squad, the posing, the skull on the sergeant (referencing the Corax picture, I'm geussing?) and how you did the Land Speeder scout's necks. The only complaint I have is the powerfist, but that's a personal dislike of scout powerfists, and these are otherwise flawless :jaw: Almost reminds me of Eggroll's Blood Angels for some reason :)

Basically these are FW Raven Guard veteran kit pieces, so there was not a lot of modelling on my part. I just made point to assemble them all from elements of MkVI armour. Converted pieces are the heavy flamer and combi-meltas, which I made combining Umbra pattern boltguns nad pre-heresy meltas from FW kit.

and how you did the Land Speeder scout's necks.

Yes, that's what I like about them most :)

Thanks for your kindness dear sir :)

After a long hiatus here I go again with some new models I've painted during that time ;)

A Caestus Assault Ram. Frankly I didn't enjoy painting it and just wanted to finish it as soon as possible, so there's not a lot of detail on this one, though I think the white raven on the prows makes up for that. I painted it employing a rather interesting technique - I've covered both prows with masking tape and I've cut out the shape from a template already on the model. There are of course cuts visible on the model's surface, but only if you look really, really closely.

Venerable Dreadnought. It is a FW kit that comes with a quite splendid banner, which I didn't use because the whole thing would be difficult to transport in my army box. Besides I've accidentally broken the shaft. I'm having second thoughts though and I think I will find a way to make it detachable and still use it.

Both weapons arms are magnetized. He might use some grit and dust on his legs, but I'm going to do it wholesale on a larger number of models in the future with an airbrush.

Brother Librarian. Usually deployed as an Epistolary, though he has Lexicanium's markings on his shoulder pad - quite perplexing, as it's originally a Chief Librarian Sevrin Loth model :) Notice the Chapter symbol on his other shoulder pad - it is a little resin bit cast especially for such uses.

C&C welcome (especially the nicer C) :)
