Fire Angels (2nd Company)

Reeeally nice model here at the last. Grim, menacing and hard to the core. Glad you didn't put anything in his left hand, I think it works quite well and better than had you tried to fill the model up, as it were. This is the sort of stuff that makes me want to start modelling (given that I never really properly started).

Kudos to you sir.

thanks for the nice words all.. work on brom is going steady atm.. although im wondering what to do with his other shoulderpad.. little bit stumped with that one.

anyway heres a picture of the progress and my attempt at fire so far, it looks a bit comic booky but im not really sure what else i could do to make it look "more real"

only a small update today, had a fair few things irl to be getting on with so havent had much painting time..

done a bit more work on one of the sarges, hes slowly moving his way to completion, lots of highlighting still to do on him.. but i like his pose, mainly because he seems aware hes been given the least equipment out of all my sarges, yet still manages to be a badass.

potential jump pack captain model or a vanguard sarge.. not sure yet, needs a lot of cleanup whatever the case but i like his pose again so thought id show him off.

assault sarge.. simple conversion.. will be leading a normal assault squad hopefully with more mk8 jump marines in it.

terrain piece! im working on some test pieces of terrain for my gaming club and for my home table.. quite liking how its going so far, lots of weathering to be done before its done though.. gotta make that sile look all sorts of worn and rusty.

rightio.. update time.

ive been ignoring my PAINting duties for far too long and keep getting annoyed with the current state of the army to boot.. aka non happy fun times.

however i did find a nice quick way to get some of my metallics done and a better shade for the red trim on the armour that closer matches the imp armour book one.. hurrah!

http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd199/typhion/Image021-3.jpg

as per usual my lighting setup/crappy phone camera is making a meal out of whatever models i put in front of it.. but meh, im much happier with the tone on the metals now, theyre less flat than before and about twice as easy to do.

(model air gun, model air steel at an angle, protect, oil wash, protect, highlight..)

and yes thats easier to me.. so sue me.

the dude with the fist is from the sang guard box (its the relaxed version of the death co heads) the 1st one is as already explained a space wolf head thats been modded.. seths head is smaller and more rounded and has less detail.. which is dumb seeing as its metal.

rightio.. after a lot of faffing and a little bit of image editing due to the photo being too dark, i have a picture for y'all.. its nothing super amazing but its as close to "in real life" as i could get at 3 minutes to midnight with one bulb, a torch and a camera that predates dinosaurs.. oh and awfull editing software.. let it be known gimp is crap and i want photoshop back :P

heres a comparison pic from imp armour..

anyways i need peoples thoughts on the metals mainly as they have been the bane of this project for me. (seriously did not think id hate painting metal this much.. im longing for templars or star phantoms at this point.. at least i knew white was a ball ache!)

once ive managed to scam my way to getting a new camera you can be assured of a huge slew of fancy pictures from every angle going.. but as long as im using something that is closer to a rock than a good camera.. well yeah.

nah, loths arm is meant to be blue (im pretty sure some of the "other" codex chapters kept their schemes apart from one blue arm) and i didnt want to waste paint airbrushing the sword blue to just go over it at a later date with a different colour... lazy for the win!

its currently sitting in a bath of nail polish remover though as my kitten knocked a pot of dwarf flesh over onto the arm.. rather glad the rest of the loth model wasnt attatched to it at the time.. stupid kitty.

thanks for the comment on the metal, ive been umming and ahhing over it for quite a while and thinking about what else i can do to it etc to improve the armies overall look.

That metal looks fine, imho. If you were to be an obsessive perfectionist then perhaps a slightly more blue-ish hue to the metal would bring the model closer to the picture but, really, the trouble wouldn't be worth it. It's good as it is. :P

Your Fire Angels are coming along greatly Lorenzen! You have some great conversions and I especially like how you are doing wear & tear on them.

*Look over at shelf full of primed black Astral Claws. Turn back to laptop to look at previous Fire Angel image. Jealously begins to rear its ugly head...

hah.. you should see the giant pot of nail varnish remover i have a load of stuff in atm, your primed models are probably in a better state than most of my stuff atm...

the weathering was pretty easy on the whole.. oil washes ftw!* the rest is just a streak of model air steel (amazing paint seriously) and a streak of black on top of that to neaten it up and act as the actual battle damage.. then weathering powder round the legs..

* the oil wash was just an eyeballed mix of black and burnt umber with a whole lot of white spirit over a satin varnish coat.. much easier to work with than gw washes etc imho.. then when you're happy with it. BAM another coat of satin varnish so you can paint with real paints.

A whole load of stuff huh? I will be looking forward to seeing you work even more of your art on the Fire Angels! :P

As for my guys, they got done with their paint-strip spa day awhile back. I was just happy that I could 'recover' so many of those marines from when I first started the actually hobby. It was like being in CSI and noting what armies they had served in by the layers of paint on em.

I like the sound of these oil washes. I will have to look into that because Badab Black and Devlan Mud only does so much. I was thinking of using the blue wash like I have seen on a fair few Grey Knights...but its too clean and shiny for guys who have been in the suck for 12 years. Also, the weathering powders look quite nice, I wonder if there is a grey one so it looks like dust from collapsed hives (still debating to place them fluff-wise in the Palace of Thorns or Hive Dominar).

I cannot remember your previous post so my apologies if I overlooked it, but have you given thought to using the paint-chipping sponge method on metallic armor? I was thinking of doing something like this to make what appeared to be small dents and dings...but I am unsure of it.

ill give it a go on the next guy.. if it doesnt look right he'll go back in the tub.

i bought a whole heap of oil paints from a crappy art store near me for like £3 and theyve served me well.. ill try and post up some pics of whats going on and show how workable they are for you if you want..

as far as forgeworlds powders go they do a grey "ash" colour one and a soot one which are quite funky.. dunno what colour "dark iron" is.. i dont have it, so cant give you any advice on that one..

but mig probably do a decent dusty grey urbany one.. they do a bazillion different kinds of rust and khaki.. so they probably do greys too.

anyways its sleepy time for me.. need to go into town tomorrow and buy supplies and interview clothes.. joy!

well in keeping with my illegal termie captain, i thought id make some illegal assault termies too, because we all like termie command squads even if we cant use them right?

http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd199/typhion/S5030032.jpg

standard bearer is made from a space hulk termie with his arms and head chopped off.. banner is a mutilated red scorpion one thats been heated up to get the fold in it and had the fangle symbol sculpted where the scorpion once was.

http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd199/typhion/S5030033.jpg

super easy apothecary made more awkward due to me being greenstuff obsessed.. everything is stock plastic bar the tabbard which is greenstuffed.. i have a real liking for this guy, though im not sure what head to give him.. decisions decisions..

basic trooper with spongey weathering is still to be done.. have been getting a tactical squad ready for detailing rather than doing one model at a time atm.. so there shouldnt be too long a wait on that.

*edit*helps if the pictures are the right way round..*

well apparently my camera has decided to crap out on me.. but ive got some blurry pics for you all to squint at.

http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd199/typhion/S5030041.jpg

this is the power armoured version of the company champion (termie armoured one will have lightning claws instead of his power weapon and "parrying blade) screw combat shields! and his mate who will be armed with a power weapon and storm shield.. because claw and shield looks drivel.

http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd199/typhion/S5030040.jpg

then we have the standard and apoth.. i only realised a moment ago that the bionic eye on the banner bearer switches sides.. so much for continuity i guess.

then we get to blurry tac squad pics..

i tried to use the sponge weathering technique i was talking about in my last post on the beaky marine and personally i dont like it, its good for small chips but it leaves me with flat weathering without the highlight on the bottom edge that i think is a requirement on metallic armour to look right.. which means hes going to end up taking far longer than id planned.. the heavy weapon is missing because i havent decided on what im using yet.. and one normal marine because i cant find him.. guess its desk tidying time. (the helmetless guy will be the meltaman eventually just for completions sake.)

That looks awesome!
