Jimmi's Worldeaters WIP

Recommended Posts

Hi chaps,

Again, thanks for all the comments.

Another little update. I've finally finished the tyberos conversion and im pretty pleased with the result........its certainly taken long enough.

I finally got the face looking decent after about 3 different attempts. I eventually went back to Zhufor's bare head and got the tones right at last. The gums and teeth were an utter pig to do but im really pleased with them now. Definately glad i swapped back to this head. The rest of the squad will be helmeted other than one guy wearing the halfmask with teeth. This head was too cool not to include somewhere (on a side note, i got 3 in my forgeworld kit which was weird but pleasant!)

As usual, my pics are a bit dark due to the permanent cloudy nature of yorkshire. Hope to take some pics on a proper camera rather than my mobile soon so i'll swap them out in the future. For now................

and a close up of face

Just to recap, the conversion went as follows.

1)Tyberos body was cut into very carefully so as not to damage the hoses and cables at the midriff.

2)Khorne termi torso glued on in place of original and gaps greenstuffed where needed.

3) Tyberos original shoulder pads were not seperate so i butchered them with a dremel until the forgeworld worldeaters ones fitted. These were glued on and greenstuff applied to gaps as needed.

4) At this point i magnetised the arms with 3mm diameter neodynium mega magnets, just in case i ever want to swap out the weapons!

Thats it other than basing and painting, but ill spare you the pain of explaining the obvious! I just followed my recipes for Zhufor.

Anyway, i'll be moving onto the next guy this week, ive assembled him and am in the process of converting the tyberos helmet to use on him. The tyberos helm is MASSIVE and is nowhere near ftting into the worldeater termi torso. Im trimming and sculpting the tyberos head by removing the ear things and shaving the whole thing into more of a skull shape. Ill then add a few spikes in places before painting it in skull colours. Pics to come soon!

Im also thinking of making some objective markers as a side project to the army.

One idea i have had so far is to CNC a cauldron shape at work and create a base with some FW renegade militia chaps next to cauldron and pile of heads, with the guys putting the heads into the cauldron and removing bare skulls once the flesh has boiled. I think i can do this quite nicely if i make the cauldron hollow and use a mix of skeleton/zombie heads set in red translucent resin. Complicated yes, but cool i think!

Cheers guys

*Retook the photos with a proper camera so they are a bit brighter, and after a 3 hour battle with photobucket i finally got them to upload without stretching or resizing. Now they seem washed out!*

Well, not so much an update as such but its news at least. It was my birthday yesterday and my lovely better half got me the forgeworld Khorne Deamon Prince and herald i had been hinting at. I have to say the detail (and amount of bits) is incredible and im now having to buy a unit of bloodletters to accompany the herald model. ill just use the herald as an extra bloodletter but he looks too cool to not use!

Luckily for me (depending how you look at it) i have several miscasts and thin bits of detail on the torso and arm so hopefully, FW will send me some new bits once they see the pics. Fingers crossed as i'll be able to use the damaged bits to start converting a bloodthirster. I was originally planning to use the Deamon prince to represent a bloodthirster but if i get the spare bits ill build one of each!

Cheers

Thanks for the comments chaps, much appreciated.

@bearingtheword - cheers for the happy birthday. Hopefully the pace of completed stuff will pick up in the next ferw weeks, i have a bit more spare time at the min.

@darksensei - Glad you like the face. The wound is a lovely bit of detail, buts really hard to paint. It looks weird until you get paint on it but looks a lot better with colour. Less like a stroke and more like an enraged maniac!

@tinysam - thanks, im pretty pleased now, its just slow going with my OCD!

Hopefully I will have some deamon related pics up this weekend, although i can only partially assemble the herald and deamon prince as you cant get to some of the detail unless you paint in sub-assemblies! Going to Harrogate GW to pic up some bloodletters on saturday too!

  • 4 weeks later...

Hi guys, just posting a long overdue update on what little i have achieved in the last few weeks. I decided to paint up my herald of Khorne to break the pain of NMM gold.........then proceded to give him NMM gold armour  I had a real struggle to get a result i was happy with on the flesh. It seems a lot harder to paint red flesh than red armour. 3 attempts later and here's where im at.

I tried a new techinque on the base to make it look like the daemon is hot and the icey floor is melting around his feet back to the bare rock beneath. Not sure if its looks to good in the pics and im sure it will look better on the daemon prince.

Heres a few pics so far. I still have to paint his eyes and retouch the teeth, as well as painting the gold on his head armour. Ive not touched the sword yet!

http://i1091.photobucket.com/albums/i388/jimmimellows/DSC_0170.jpg

Other notable progress includes assembly of 7 bloodletters to go with this guy, i've converted the tyberos helmeted chap ready for paint (pics soon) and ive done a load of custom bases for the deamons.

The main body of my daemon prince was miscast in several places. Forgeworld sent me a recast which was worse than the original. When i rang for a third bit, the guy got a huff on and told me to send all the batches of bits back for examination (i think he thought i was ebaying the bits or something). So no spares to build a bloodthirster now :) They contacted me today and said they need to build a new mould as the latest recast was also rubbish so now i have to wait 3 weeks for my new bit. Cant argue with the service but the speed is terrible and it'll be about 2 months from getting my miscast birthday pressie to actually getting it sorted. Not happy, although Simon Kirkham has been very responsive and helpful, he's even been examining the bits as they get recast. Hope i get compensated somehow!

Thanks Tanith Ghost. Im not planning on making the herald too different. I think the gold armour and the huge size difference is enough, the herald is quite a large model compared to a normal bloodletter.

Tarvik, glad you like the base. I wasnt sure it looks the same in the pics as in real life. Ill post a tutorial at some point. I need to get a proper lighting setup for good photos though. Keep an eye out for a tutorial in the near future. Glad you like the recipe.

Now, news on the models. Bizarrely, the day after forgeworld told me i'd be waiting 3 weeks for new bits, i got another email. This one said a new kit had been despatched and would arrive next day. It did, so now i have a daemon prince built up. Annoyingly, i didnt get my original miscasts returned by FW so i cant build my original prince as a bloodthirster. Ill have to try and use all the spare bits on a different body. On the plus side, i now have a second herald which im unsure what do do with. I dont really want to ebay it as its a very nice little model. I cant see an easy way to convert the pose to create a twin for the other herald!

Heres princey, i chopped the original resin chain from his ankle and extended it using a proper bit of jewelery chain. Sorry its not so easy to make out on the pics. I used a 60mm round edged resin base from fenris minatures. I textured it using greenstuff and a rock. I only have a little greenstuffing to do to a few gaps and bubbles then this guy is ready for paint. To be honest other than a warped axe which was easily fixed in hot water, this kit went together easily after the bits were deflashed and cleaned and i think its my favorite model ever. Im having to resist painting this in a an effort to get the termis and bloodletters done first. Im struggling it has to be said.

Ive also included a couple of pics showing the latest terminator progress. Its by no means anywhere near finished.

In terms of conversions i got rid of all imperial bits, resculpted the hip plates with green stuff and plasticard strip. I added a lot of spike to places to make it more "chaosy". Im avoiding using more than a couple of bareheads in the whole army so i converted my spare tyberos helmet. I had to file off the neck bits and ear things and filed a bit off the helmet too just to allow it to fit in the worldeater torso. I think i got away with it as the helmet looks quite skull shaped now. I added a few spikes and am pretty pleased with the end result. It fits the rest of the model nicely i think. Im buying extra FW termi world eater heads from ebay for the rest of the squad i think, i want them to look fairly uniform in some respects.

Hopefully more pics to follow soon.

Thanks

*EDIT* Dont want to get in any trouble over advertising, however, it may be useful info for some people. I've been waiting 5 months to find somewhere selling the mutilated torso from the Forgeworld Renegade Militia upgrade kit. Good news is that there are some on ebay. I have just got one, there are 4 left. Snap them up while you can cos they are not around very often! Result!!!!

Jimmi for your prince there are you going to give him wings? I've been thinking about buying that model as it looks awesome but if I did I'd want to give him wings so I could use him in game.

Ah, now I get it. That herald is the FW one. For some reason it didn't click. Well that's another reason to get that prince/herald combo I suppose....

Im not sure about the wings yet. I wanted to add wings so i can use the model as a prince or a bloodthirster, i even planned to make the wings magnetic . The main problem i have is with finding a suitable set of wings. I'm not keen on the idea of large wings such as from the balrog model. I'm also keen that the wings are folded and pretty ragged looking.

I might just cop out of WYSIWYG in regards to wings, i guess i can say his movement is represented by his daemonic speed or something. Its not like i play in tourneys so i should get away with it.

I highly recommend getting this model as long as you love prepping parts before you paint. Its bigger than the standard GW prince and the detail is amazing. The bonus is the herald model which i really like. The only thing is that the model requires almost all of the spikes glueing on so be prepared for a lot of trimming, losing tiny parts then trying to find them from the carpet and glueing things in place using tweezers. I had to heat the axe in hot water and bend it back to shape and there is a lot of craft knife work involved in de-flashing the model. I used 3 scalpel blades and nearly had my fingers off a few times so beware. Also, if you do order this kit, make sure you inspect the area around the belt for thin or non existant details. There may be some of my original bad batch about but i doubt it. Forgeworld were fine to sort out any issues however so its not really an issue i guess.

*EDIT* You just resparked by interest in wings and ive been trawling through bits sites for ideas. I just found some Fantasy Chaos manticore wings and im wondering if they might be the right kind of scale for what i wanted. They could be a little more folded to be perfect for what i want but they might just do. What do people think?

I think the manticore wings would be awesome for him. I've been thinking of using them myself for a prince conversion I did awhile back. There are a few bitz websites that sell just the wings too. Oh and as far as dropping parts in the carpet, I do that all the time now and end up finding or stepping on them weeks later. ;)

I might have to purchase a set then, i found a few on ebay. They can always go in my bits box if they look wrong. Had a good night of painting tonight and nearly finished the latest termi. Just need to finish his arms. Pics tomorrow hopefully! Glued a couple of the spikes with impaled skulls that i had spare from my 2nd daemon prince, onto the tyberos conversion as trophy racks. It looks ok so i might use the rest of my spare spikes in a similar fashion through the rest of the squad. Pics tomorrow too!

I managed to paint a bloodletter reasonably quickly too so hopefully i can churn that whole squad out quickly then get back onto the termi squad. I want to finish that before i start painting princey. Still unsure as to how to paint my bloodletter swords too, i think ill paint them all last once i get some inspiration.

As for the bits in the carpet, my dog has a good habit of finding them..........and then eating them. Or more often than not, i drop them when ive applied industrial strength superglue and they stick to our already half ruined carpet. My missus hates it but we live in a tiny little cottage so i have to do all my modelling on a tray in our main room!

To be honest, thats my favorite part of the model, a huge chain thong would be enough to drive anyone in to an insane rage. No pics tonight i'm afraid, it should be the next day or two. It got dark before i finished work and the light inside is just too terrible.

Evening chaps.

I managed to get a few photos of my work so far on the 3rd termi and my herald. Photo's a bit dark but i'm struggling to get better ones. I need to do arms on the termi and a few highlights to the helmet and gold touchups. Im planning on adding my mutilated torso as a trophy for this termi, it should look pretty gruesome.

Herald needs a few gold details painting, the gold horn tip needs some tweaking and i need to figure out a way to do the sword.

Pretty happy with these 2, im getting slightly quicker. The pics dont look as good as the real thing IMO but they never really do.

i like the contrast between the snow and armour, but unless they are fighting in those very rare times when there's no snowfall OR wind (very rare in winter) they'd have more snow building up on their armour.

(maybe you could have a daemon using someones intestines as a scarf or something)

  • 1 month later...

Righto, i think its time for a bit of an update. I wouldn't say i have achieved a huge amount but i'll post my latest progress. Pics as usual do not do justice but they are the best i can get in yorkshire.

my 3rd terminator is as good as done, i just have to finish the lightning claws, and skull on his shoulder pad! I used the mutilated torso from the FW renegade militia upgrade kit. I really like the bit and waited ages to get it.

http://i1091.photobucket.com/albums/i388/jimmimellows/P1070854.jpg

http://i1091.photobucket.com/albums/i388/jimmimellows/P1070853.jpg

http://i1091.photobucket.com/albums/i388/jimmimellows/P1070851.jpg

My herald dude is now done. I may add a couple of fishing line drips to the sword or corpse somewhere at some point, im still debating it. Really happy with this model.

http://i1091.photobucket.com/albums/i388/jimmimellows/P1070836.jpg

http://i1091.photobucket.com/albums/i388/jimmimellows/P1070849.jpg

http://i1091.photobucket.com/albums/i388/jimmimellows/P1070845.jpg

and a nice little close up of the corpse. The eyes were a bit of a bugger but im pleased with how they came out.

http://i1091.photobucket.com/albums/i388/jimmimellows/P1070841.jpg

Now the main reason ive done very little painting is that ive been dabbling with a bit of sculpting and more conversions on the rest of the squad. Ive opted to go with helmets for the rest of the termis so i got a few more from ebay.

First up is reaper autocannon/heavy flamer dude. I really am not fond of the standard reaper autocannon. Its just too big and looks weird in my opinion. I decided to make a "sawn off" style version by shortening the barrel. I drilled it out to make it look nice too. Now i dont really like the spikey bayonet and im going for chain weapons for most models so i grabbed a job lot of the FW chain bayonets off ebay. I replaced the spikey bayonet and it went on pretty well with minimal greenstuffing needed. It also matches the shape of the FW chainaxe perfectly which i used for the models other arm.

http://i1091.photobucket.com/albums/i388/jimmimellows/P1070862.jpg

http://i1091.photobucket.com/albums/i388/jimmimellows/P1070860.jpg

http://i1091.photobucket.com/albums/i388/jimmimellows/P1070859.jpg

As with the rest of army, the arms are magnetic so i will be making a heavy flamer loadout for this model too. I'm using the FW lufgt huron heavy flamer arm once it reappears on ebay. I'll have to dremel off the shoulder pad and replace with a WE equivalent. For now, ive made a righthanded chainaxe using the lord zhufor axe arm, although i think the model looks knarly using 2 chainaxes!

http://i1091.photobucket.com/albums/i388/jimmimellows/P1070865.jpg

I wasnt happy with the legs on my 4th and 5th termis so ive started to resculpt them. The 4th termi shown below uses space wolve termi legs but i wasnt happy with the wolve buckle to his belt. I scuplted the pattern in to a skull and then had a bit of practice doing loincloths before adding one to the model. I may add a last layer to the loincloth but its pretty much done. Ill also add some spikes to the greave panels.

http://i1091.photobucket.com/albums/i388/jimmimellows/P1070866.jpg

The 5th termi uses a pair of chaos termi legs but i just couldnt stand how horrifically bad the original legs looked. Ive removed all the detail from the lower legs and am halfway through adding ridges around the shin pads followed eventually by spikes and studs. Im happy so far, i think it looks miles better. I think the problem with this particular set of legs is that the originally shins are out of perspective for moulding reasons and one leg looks bigger than the other. At least my mod has fixed this issue.

http://i1091.photobucket.com/albums/i388/jimmimellows/P1070869.jpg

I think im downsizing this squad to a 5 man retinue for now. Im getting bored of terminators and 8 in a squad is just a points sink in the games i play. I can always expand later if i see fit. At some point i will be making 4 pairs of chainaxe/combi melta arms as alternatives for the lightning claws. That way i have the option for either a combat squad (heavy flamer/4 x lightning claws) or a more shooty squad (reaper/ 4x combimeltas)

Heres a slightly out of focus squad shot so far

http://i1091.photobucket.com/albums/i388/jimmimellows/P1070872.jpg

So i still have to finish this squad and 8 bloodletters, as well as a deamon prince (which i'll be giving optional magnetic chaos manticore wings), before i need to buy any more models. I'm optimistically hoping to get a contemptor dreadnought and a MK3c demios rhino for chrimbo so there will be massive sculpting work to do on those. For the contemptor, i'm planning on using an old FW blacklegion dreadnought "skull" head in place of the loyalist one, and ill be using a running pose with a fleeing death korps trooper (one of the running heavy weapons team chaps) about to get cleaved by some kind of knarly weapon. Not sure which gun to have, although arms will be magnetic for obvious reasons, and ill be adding chaotic trim to all armour panels as well as trophy victims. Seen as i have a spare herald from my FW daemon prince, i think ill use the little dismembered corpse hanging from the contemptor. Should look good as long as i have it hanging from a chain in some kind of dynamic pose! As for the rhino, im still plotting away.

Anyway, enough of my insane ramblings....

Jim

I love the reds and golds you have done. They have so much warmth and depth (especially the gold.)

I know that the bases the Khorne Terminators are on, but aren't the daemon prince and blood letter bases too big or too small for gameplay, or is this just and army that will sit on a shelf?

Thanks, glad you like it.

Im more of a modeller and casual gamer, but ive made sure the bases are the correct size just in case i ever play against any rule Nazi's. The herald is a lot bigger than a standard bloodletter and came on a 40mm base. The one its on is just a round lipped 40mm base. The prince came on a 60mm base and although it was hard to find a 60mm round lipped base i eventually managed to, although they are resin rather than plastic.

Although the army will never get used on a weekly basis, ive tried to adhere to all the base size/wysiwyg/fluff and all the rest of it in case my pace of gaming ever picks up ;)

Where did you get the round lip bases? I have always preferred them over GW's flat sided bases. I know that the medium base that Privateer Press uses on their models are the correct size for 40k gaming, but the large bases are far too small.

The herald looks like it is the size of a normal blood letter. Thought it was a lot smaller.
