The Primarchs - Artwork

Eerie beat me to it but hes describes as black haired in 'A Thousand Sons'. Plus it doesn't say in the Index Astartes article that his hair is of any particular color. I'd prefer if his hair was black though. Like i said, its not a deal breaker.

Every painting, image, and miniature of Sanguinius to come out of GW or the BL has always been blonde..... (and it's not like we're especially short on images of him)

How did Abnett get that wrong.

I'll assume McNiell was just being his regular herp derp self, but Abnett? Madness.

Sanguinius is blonde.

Thou shalt not argue.

By the way, can anyone identify that pink arc of light behind Angron? Is it some warpy stuff coming from Magnus or what is it intended to be? I in general have certain problems to tell where one armor ends and the next one begins with the leftmost four of them.

Canon vs. canon bro. I'm not going to argue, and Sangy's hair IS probably blond, I just prefer black. I really like the pic is the point.

SQUEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!

Horus and Fulgrim - look a little odd, Horus looks like a boxer with a flat nose, and Fulgrim just looks menacing, more like an evil chap.

Sanguinius, Mortarion, Magnus, Angron - Sangy looks as expected as does Mortarion, Magus looks.. well... red... and Angron looks like a sunburnt old grandad, lol.

Khan, Lorgar, Dorn - Definately the lookers of the bunch, they look every bit as i imagined and expected, sexy as hell. :D

I have to admit it is a shame that the Emperor isn't in shot, or even a hint of him somewhere like a "golden glow" off to one side or something.

That is a FABULOUS image of them all. It portrays these Primarchs exactly how I pictured them. The way Horus is imagined here fits with artworks that GW have done in the past and his facial expression as well as Fulgrim's allude to some "plan" they have. Awesome.

Angron looks pretty messed up (but he really was anyway) and you can see the implants in his head. He's also not smaller than the others, he's just leaning forward against the railing and roaring in salute. In fact this ensemble photo does a fantastic job of showing some very specific characteristics of the Primarchs.

I only noticed Mortarion when I followed the GIANT SCYTHE down to his hand.

I know the story had the remaining Primarchs elsewhere, but I would LOVE to see artwork in a similar vein done for them, as the artist has a very good handle on illustrating the characteristics of those pictured.

This would make a great mural BTW.

Um, I don't know about that

Horus, is he a mongoloid?

Proportions, did they just get thrown out the window? Or is that balcony really a mile long?

Yes more then likely it is. Remember the Admech ground down a mountain range to make the viewing stand. As for the primarchs mortarions head look's flat and small the rest look o.k

Are we sure Mortarion is even there? Really, he looks like he could just be a continuation of Magnus. I'm not kidding.

I don't understand why Lorgar is angry, or Fulgrim looks like a primarch version of the Brain (would that make Horus Pinkie?).

Other than those minor issues with the art, it's very nice ;)

I agree, a bright glow landing on Horus or something would have made it look amazing!

I think your blind mate.

You can clearly see Mortarion's hood and the green plume of his breath escaping upwards, also you can see his hand on his scythe, which you can clearly see resting on the ledge and if you follow the handle up to the top of the close up picture - you can see the scythe blade curving back out of shot.

Horus being made Warmaster is more than likely the reason, although saying that we don't know if Horus was declared Warmaster before or after the Astartes march past.

Just noticed as well that Horus' left hand is on Fulgrims shoulder, obviously sharing a moment of "guess the future". ;)

Mortarion's head is hidden under a hood and partially obscured by Magnus' hair. Can't really gauge it's size because you can't see any of the detail about it.

As for Lorgar's expression, it would seem to me that he's not into all the pomp of the event and sees it as showy/disrespectful.

As for Fulgrim, correct me if I'm wrong, but was he not the first Primarch that Horus pulled to his side? That would explain their heavily implied connection in the painting.

Edit: I REALLY REALLY would love for this painting to be made into a Wall Scroll. I would buy one in a heartbeat. It's that cool.

Magnus has always been portrayed as having red skin. I don't know why people are bothered by this.

The size of Angron is...interesting. Has his height ever been referenced anywhere? Because looking at this picture makes me think of him as a little ball of endless fury.

Didn't Rogal Dorn grow a mustache?

Would've liked to have seen some of those scripture tattoos on Lorgar's skull that's been quite prominent in descriptions of him.

I'm curious why Horus is depicted in Terminator armour when he wore a suit of artificer plate up until well after the events of Davin revisited? His Terminator suit was a gift from Kelbor Hal to seal his pact with the Mechanicum of Mars (so was given to him not only after his wounding on Davin, but also well after Ullanor).

Eh, true enough, but even that looks like it could be part of Magnus's shoulderplate, and the hand on the scythe honestly looks like Magnus's. Though it's hard to argue with the scythe :o

My favorites of the bunch are Mortarion, Angron, and Dorn. The rest are just whatever, could take it or leave it personally.

I really like the image of Mortarion because he is the freaking Lord of Death and his scythe looks sick. He's mostly hidden, but still all the awesome. Angron because as another member previously mentioned, he looks like a little ball of fury... fury to the 100th power with a splash of insane gladiatorial savagery thrown into the mix. I love how his small little paw is crushing the railing. And Rogal Dorn looks every bit like what I expected, a true son of the Emperor. Though he's kinda sunburnt like the rest. I assume it's just the quality of the image. And that's another thing... why the hell are the initial leak images always awful quality? ;)

Presumably, I also like the Thunderhawk fly-by parade thing they got goin' on.

Damn, the Primarchs are cool. Thanks Neil Roberts.

I used my crappy paint-skills to mark out the four of them for better differentiation. Angron is significantly smaller than his brothers in this picture. Even if he was not leaning forward. That he stands between Magnus and the Khan, who are both really tall doesn't make it better, but even between Lorgar and Dorn he would still be the shortest.

For Mortarion I included the column of green smoke billowing from his cowl. Not part of his body of course, but kind of belongs to him.

Agreed, possibly the intention was to have Angron fully leaning over the balcony. Either way, something is 'off' about him. I also feel Mortarion is too hidden away and could either have been left out (giving Sanguinius more attention) or given him a more defined pose. Otherwise top stuff - picture of the month.

Titans could've been bigger :)

How much bigger were you hoping for?

Who do you think is taking this picture?

Vulkan. Duh.

Guilliman directed the picture.

Ferrus built the camera.

Perturabo didn't want anything to do with a picture that had Dorn in it.

Russ was too hungover to show up.

No one invited Jonson.

Brilliant. :)

Not taking back a single bit of my admiration for this cover, a few minor remarks:

- Dorn should be bigger. In the account of the fight between him and Konrad Curze, the latter is said to be found hunched like a gargoyle on top of the giant's heaving chest, or something like that.

- Magnus should be bigger.

- Angron should be bigger.

- The wings on Dorn's back and Fulgrim's shoulder should look a little less flimsy, gives a poor image of the Imperium's artificers.

Mortarion's presence, position and 'invisibility' makes perfect sense and is in tone with his character.

Again, this is awesome. Yes, maybe Sangy is less well-made, maybe a few faces look off, but drawing 9 super-detailed beings is an extenuating accomplishment.
