So another little update and a question...

Firstly the update.

Heres Amael's Mantle as it currently sits...

http://i1194.photobucket.com/albums/aa365/MadDocNZ/40K/P1000810_close.jpghttp://i1194.photobucket.com/albums/aa365/MadDocNZ/40K/P1000809_close.jpghttp://i1194.photobucket.com/albums/aa365/MadDocNZ/40K/P1000808_close.jpg

Apologies for that last pic not the clearest...

Heres Amael's combat shield sculpted entirely from scratch...

http://i1194.photobucket.com/albums/aa365/MadDocNZ/40K/P1000811_close.jpg

And heres a dry fit of Amael's sword to give a rough idea of how it'll look...

http://i1194.photobucket.com/albums/aa365/MadDocNZ/40K/P1000815_close.jpg

Lastly the question.

Should I go with asymmetrical spines on the Mantle, spines on the right shoulder rather than lower down the leg like on the left? Or just mirror the position of the spines?

Basically this...

Instead of this...

Or both the same position.

Hey this is coming along very nicely! Love the sword - it means business! Are you sure he's just a Champ? Isn't he like a Successor Chapter Master or something? :)

RE: spines - go asymmetrical!

Can't wait to see this guy painted... What color do you envisage for the mantle?

Nope, just a Brother Champion. ;)

RE: spines - go asymmetrical!

I was thinking asymmetrical, its good to have someone else support that direction.

Grey-white fur while the patches of scale (which sadly aren't really visible in the pics), spines and talons will be blue-black with the fangs in dirty/aged bone.

I'm just curious about what the Mantel/Pelt is supposed to represent? It seems as though it'll be an amazing piece once done.

But I am wondering it its a Wolf Pelt? Or???

No not a wolf, its a Legion era Relic, the pelt of one of the Great beasts of Caliban held within the Chapter Reclusiam. Its inspired by the description of Corswain from ADB's excellent Savage Weapons, and loosely based on this artwork...

I would rather go more or less symetrical.

Don't forget that it was a beast ie:living animal => the elbow, knees, shoulders of each animal are symetrical in position and size.

But you can break one spine to represent the furious fight between your marine and the beast (and maybe make a jewelry withe the piece of broken spine on the belt?)

My thinking for the asymmetry was that its a chaotic beast so the bilateral symmetry thats normally in evidence in bipeds/quadrupeds wouldn't necessarily apply, the spines being another mutation and not a naturally feature.

But you can break one spine to represent the furious fight between your marine and the beast (and maybe make a jewelry withe the piece of broken spine on the belt?)

Now I'm more torn on the issue. :tu:

Now this is a good idea! Battle marks and trophies!!!

Good luck with that! :)

So, we have my wife's niece staying with us for a week and somehow my free time for modelling has mysteriously dropped to practically nil.

I do have an update though...

http://i1194.photobucket.com/albums/aa365/MadDocNZ/40K/P1000834_close.jpghttp://i1194.photobucket.com/albums/aa365/MadDocNZ/40K/P1000833_close.jpghttp://i1194.photobucket.com/albums/aa365/MadDocNZ/40K/P1000830_close.jpghttp://i1194.photobucket.com/albums/aa365/MadDocNZ/40K/P1000832_close.jpghttp://i1194.photobucket.com/albums/aa365/MadDocNZ/40K/P1000836_close.jpg

One Mantle (complete with a broken spine) done, one trophy (the tip of said broken spine) on power plant done bar some minor touch up work and the tail end of the rope + tassel its hanging from, and undermail + mail tabard done.

What remains is detailing for the tabard including anchor rings/discs and trophies/icons/totems (such as a skull with a 'IV' etched into the forehead) and detailing (such as anchor brackets) on the combat shield.

This is the bulkiest, scariest Dark Angel I've ever seen! You really captured the grimdark feeling of the art piece you displayed above brilliantly!

Now that you are close to start painting, I was wondering about the color of the pelt... I know you said grey, I know it's grey in the artwork but I think it might be too plain... To obvious a reference to a wolf, too natural if you like for a Chaos beast! Maybe something unnatural-looking like red/orange or blue/grey maybe?

It all goes down to execution obviously so ultimately I'm certain the outcome will be great :teehee: , just thinking aloud here...

I think grey-white may have been alittle misleading, sorry for that. I probably should have explained how'd it'd be built up - codex grey base, followed by a layer of shadow grey, then a layer of space wolves grey with a soft blue wash, then a 50/50 space wolves grey/skull white layer followed by a final highlight layer of white, it gives a crisp cold white colour with grey-blue recesses reminiscent of the deeper hues found in permafrost.

It all goes down to execution obviously so ultimately I'm certain the outcome will be great ;) , just thinking aloud here...

No worries, its always good to have another perspective with something as subjective as modelling/painting.

Maddoc, that pelt/mantle and the chain look awesome! You've done some great work with the Grey Stuff! Looking forward to seeing it all painted up! Personally, I think his armor should be Legion black (can't remember if you already discussed how you are painting the armor up) with maybe only the upper or lower portion of the pauldron DA green and silver detailing, like in the image you posted.

It's all coming together fantastically!

Sorry for the late response, it took me a few days to pick my drooling jaw up off the ground...

You've changed the game MadDoc. That's really all that needs to be said. How on earth after what you have accomplished could someone be happy with a champion with minimalist trappings? This image is a marker that painters and converters should strive to achieve.

It has all the elements, a whole-ly unique look, that is not similair to any chapter other than the 1st Legion, Be it with the weapons, the armour, the pose, the design and thought... probably more-over than anything else, the story it brings.

I love how it envokes questions. Just like that original art peice for the bearer of the mantle... often the most stirring things in art make you interested enough to ask questions. Why does he have the pelt, what animal is it from, was it taken as a trophy from a natural opponent, was it a gift, was it a relic, was it an honour mark from a champion of the Vylka Fenryka, who lost the right to wear it after losing the honour duel fought during the 13th Black Crusade when the Space Wolves and the Dark Angels had to fight together in the same war zone... I could go on, and thats the cool thing.

Awesome work and such a strong progression. You have stirred the brain juices for certain, and I look forward to what people do, after being inspired by this.

Thank you for the kind words everyone, and the extremely high praise (Candleshoes).

@ Bryan Blaire - The current plan is Chapter Green with either Gold or Silver (leaning towards this) for the trim/detailing for the armour, with blackened metal for the piping and (maybe) the mail. I think the mail and trim need to be differentiated, so if I go with silver trim then the mail will most likely be blackened metal and if I go with gold trim, then the mail can be either silver/boltgun or blackened metal. I'm thinking I'll do the undercloak for the Mantle either black or deep red (Scorched Brown built up through to Red Gore/Scab Red).

I tend to steer clear of Legion colours as my army is Post Heresy. I may do a Pre-Heresy force at some point though (so many opportunities for conversions) and if/when I do, they'll be getting the full Legion treatment.

Just a small update on why there hasn't been an update.

Real life has reared its ugly head and monopolised much of my painting/converting time, along with a boatload of bad news and other stress its sadly made for very little progress.

Rest assured though my fellow Unforgiven, I will wrestle back some time and finish Baradiel's Command Squad, and then I have a Ravenwing Attack Squadron that needs assembly and painting...

Fear not, as do the Unforgiven, so will I persevere.

Sorry to hear you're going through a stressful time... Hope things will improve soon.

But the attitude is correct! You will persevere! and take your time too - your project is too good to rush!

This thread is now morphing into my ETL thread...

I MadDoc answer the challenge of the Unforgiven and vow to complete a Command Squad (with Paladin Champion, Apothecary, Company Standard bearer and two Veterans w/ power weapons) from Codex: Dark Angels of total value 190 points on or before August 15. Success will bring eternal glory to Dark Angels and failure will doom me to bear the sign of damnation until the year-end.

Proper update coming soon (hopefully).

Agreed, this thread has raised the bar. Mad Doc, this is probably one of the most significant developements since chapter specific upgrade kits. seriously, My mind has been a whirlwind of concepts since I've seen your work. now I think we will see hobbyists pushing the envelope iwth their conversions now.

everybody take note, this is one of those moments when the hobby changes forever. we have mad doc to thank for that.........

We fear not! We know that MadDoc will deliver. ;)

Excellent Apothecary with robes no less... Will you put blood stains on the robes or will that make him too Painboy-ish?

Can't wait to this this project develop! Keep walking!
