Thank you all for the replies. Much appreciated. smile.png

So here's where I spend the next 5 mins talking about how I've blown these guys off - yadda, yadda, blah, blah, blah. Instead I'll just leave this here. Progress is progress, as irritating as it is to say that. I'd like to have painted something by now, but I haven't. I wanted to update this because I'm pretty proud of what I was able to do with this model. Nothing major but he's now my favorite from the army.

The Captain: I'm just now starting to get a feel for him and put together a suitable identity. He needs a name, and unfortunately a lot of the background notes, including names, was saved in the blogs. And those have vanished since the board changed. I must've not been too attached to anything because I can't remember a damn thing! He really screams "Commander" to me, which I really wanted to hit home. He's about 90% finished. I need to attach the scabbard to the body properly and I'm a little bit stumped as to what to do in regards to a backpack, but I do want something more than basic.

Hope to hear from you all. Thanks for stopping in. Oh, and there will be red. Soon. Very soon.

Thanks for the replies, gents. smile.png

deathspectersgt7: Thanks! I really like the backpack you're referring to but it doesn't quite fit the aesthetics for my army. I'm looking for more Greco-Roman influences, and that's much more monkish and knightly.

heathens: Nah, of course not buddy. I love reading your commentary. Oddly enough, his left arm gave me a lot of issues. I tried building it from scratch twice before saying feth it. Instead it's the left arm from the new FW Mk. IV double-handed monster chainsword thing.

One-eye: Glad you noticed! Thank you for that. One of my goals is to give each model some individuality.

Now, I'm researching airbrushing. Looking into what would be good for a novice. You know just to apply some basecoating and shading to start with. If I can figure out what kinda kit would be good to start with, I can get that going, and hopefully have some painting to show very soon. Also, I've decided I wasn't happy with the Sergeants. Or some of the Tacticals. blush.png

I'm not sure why I can never just settle. But anyways, a lot of the models are getting legs replaced... arms moved... different cuirass armor, etc. Just some fine tuning, really!

Looking good, mate! Can't say I'm a fan of the head choice, but the pose is sweet, as is the conversion work :tu:

As for the backpack, go with a nice bulky Mk III one to mirror his... bulkiness? :p

Anyway, looking forward to seeing more updates from you DP and am happy that you're back on track ;)

I'm glad to see you're working on these guys again.

You've managed to build some amazing models. The combinations of parts and posing are fantastic.

I particularly like Caracalla and Reclusiarch Marchosian.

For the Captain's backpack, I'd suggest the eagle-head backpack from the Commander box.

I'm looking forward to seeing some red on your Genesis.

How about the one from the Commander box set, with the Eagle heads?

That said, I'm really impressed with what your coming up with here mate. It makes me want to step my game up... if only I had the time. Keep it up! :)

Ludovic, Ramell, & Ferrus: Thank you all for the kind words and suggestions.

I'm getting tired of blowing the dust off this thread every time I come back around. Maybe I should stay and get something painted? I don't know what it is but I have this insatiable need to throw my miniatures at the wall and reconstruct them a million times over until I'm half-ass satisfied. I think to myself, alright I like how the model looks but then I stumble across someone's work that is superior in every way. Blindhamster, Lorenzen, Heathens, and all you others - I'm looking at you & your inspirational works and the problems they've caused. dry.png

So, as has already become a hallmark of this army, here's Caleus 2.0 err... 3.0.

Caleus is basically how I imagine the "poster boy" Astartes to look and act like. He is my Learchus. A flawed specimen, but a perfect Space Marine. I wanted a more aggressive stance to suggest his vitality and hunger, hopefully the reposed legs does just that. He is a swordsman at heart - hence the coup de grâce pose. When I get to painting him I'll add a Genesis symbol to the buckle plate. I can honestly say that I am happy with how he's come out and will be updating this with the new blood at each chance I get. Nearly none of them are the same as their previous incarnations. biggrin.png

Thanks for stopping by!

Thanks, man. Your work is always a pleasure to see, especially all that weathering. smile.png

His right (our left) shoulder pad is from the new Ravenwing Command Squad set, and the other one can be found on the Grey Knights sprue.

EDIT: Thank you deathspecter, see above.

Aquilanus & chapter master Benji: Thank you guys, much appreciated.

Heathens: Heh, I thought I should post an update cuz you'd think there's something painted by now for sure.

Midian: Thanks!

Biggest thing that's been holding me back is which method should I use to undercoat/basecoat? For those of you that have taken the plunge into the expansive world of airbrushing, I'm sure you can remember just how daunting it can be to get into it as a beginner. I want to try something new, so I've been researching over the last month on which airbrush model, compressor, and accessories I need. Would like to have something painted by the end of the month. It's really just a matter of dropping the dough on the whole setup. Once that happens I can move forward and begin laying down some red on these suckers.

Also, another thing that's been lingering in the back of my mind is the eventual release of the new Space Marine Codex. When I last followed the rumors people were targeting an early fall release. Since I've (re-)rebuilding over the last couple months, I keep thinking damn what if they finally do a true re-haul of the Tactical Squad box set? I'm at a crossroads because I'm under the impression we're going to get a lot of nice new treats. People can say what they want, but I feel the Tactical Squad is very outdated at this point. Lately, I've just been in a transit state - waiting for some more concrete info on the new release, as well as the release of some upcoming FW models, and finally biting the bullet on an airbrush.

That's co-incidence, I was looking at a few airbrushes in a local hobby store (Hobbycraft) today, but they don't exactly sell top end ones, and it's something a little beyond my budget for now. I hear you on the list building, but for now I'm carrying on regardless of any significant overhaul of units and deal with it if/when they happen. Due to inexperience of what squads were like between Second ed and fifth, I can't really say if Tacticals are outdated, but I do love them as a unit - the first game in recent times saw them win the game for me (even if they were down to literally one Marine at the end.) I am looking forward to seeing what changes are made to C:SM though happy.png
