Ultramarines 1st Company project

Thanks Guys

Im going to stick with the blues for the moment but who knows.

One thing I will say is that gree stuffing nids is much easier than marines. The organic shapes make it really easy to hide bad filler

Ive just hit this with the Tamiya clear red. That stuff is great. I literally dripped it on the wound and it did the rest. It then dries sticky so you can "pull" it in directions to form drips

Once the nids teeth are done I'll put some more on but I forgot how long it takes to dry so I got on with the metal on the legs

Next up to add a proper joint on the thumb. for some reason on the dread kit it came off the thumb just blends with the hand and theres no articulated joint

Beautiful power sword. Those greys and blues mixed together if Im not mistaken.

Yes, its a base coat of eshin gray mixed with a touch of regal blue.

Because I was putting it on so thinly it dried instantly so I had a piece of card to mask each side and turned it 4 times, then added skull white to the mix (with a spot of water) and repeated the process. I did this about 4 times until I was almost spraying pure white.

@Biohazard

Thanks. Tamiya clear red is great but Im trying to hold back from putting too much on.

Im onto the legs now so expect an update tomorrow.

I do use an airbrush but I have done it before with a regular brush with the same results but it took longer.

What Id recommend (that I have only just got) is valejos (sp?) glaze medium.

Ive been using latinum medium from GW but this drys almost instantly at room temp. The Valejo glaze medium has a much longer drying time meaning you can pull it around for longer which will help when blending on the sword.

Thanks Jeremy, its odd but if you look over the thread I can see that now the blending is looking much better than at the start.

Ive now started to highlight and damage the legs. The top plates arent done yet and Im working on what Im going to do to the knee pads that need attaching but they are coming on. This was about an hour and a halfs work. I think this ones going to be a long job (but a good one)

i know youve probably answered this already somewhere but i couldnt see it, what head is that on the cronus stand in please?

thanks

millest

Thanks guys. Im going to put some effort into this one so hopefully it'll continue.

@Millest its one of the helmets of the new vanguard vets. Ive started one of them but then burnt out. Theres a good set of helmets in that box including this one that looks more armoured than the other

Wait... for the chipping, you're using a dark grey, underlining it with a light blue/white, and then using a fine tip pen/marker at the top to add depth, correct?

Clever, and very effective. Gonna try this sometime.

Thanks for all the supportive comments. They do help and I dont want anyone to think this is fishing for praise or ego. Hopefully I can also give back.

@1000heathens

You are close but Im not using a micron pen as I find them to be shiny and smudge.

For damage I paint a black shape. I normally try and get it regular so no curved edges. This is to emulate the chipping of ceramite. Then I underline it in my highlight colour. Then I put the bare ceramite showing through (and cut back the highlight) from the bottom up but leaving black at the top. If its a big hole I may put a dab of black wash at the top to graduate the ceramite into darkness.

If any one wants a tutorial let me know as Ive plenty more to do on this mini.

Anyway I wanted to give it some colour and try out more freehand so I did this on its knee pad.

It now does what it says on the tin.

I also cant help thinking the blue knee pad is looking at me!

@Anaziel @Flint13

I'll upload a tutorial once I get onto the arm as I want to do some chipping on the fingers

Flint, thanks for the comment but Im not about to start a Nid army (although it was fun to paint and a change from blue)

@post_offline.png Dorns_fist

Thanks, Ive been following your progress with the fists and they are looking good (and yellow)

@ Brother Sgt. Steine Thanks

@disease

I think the trick is using an airbrush

I start airbrushing foundation Astronominan grey. This lays down a nice light base. I then airbrush a mix of this and skull white.

I then hit it with pure skull white. To shade it I then wash it with drakenhof nightshade mixed with lahmiuan medium. I then highlight with skull white and lahmiuan medium

Ive done a bit more on this and got the body, head and cyclone launcher finished. I now need to weather it

I'll get the arms done at the weekend

Edit: heres a better pic without the flash wash out

  • 3 weeks later...

I thought Id wait until this was done until I posted any more.

There is a bit more battle damage and weathering to add but I'll do that when my airbrush is out.

So for now here it is

Its darker blue than this but the flash is popping on it

or I could finish just one assault marine!!

or work on my IG PDF force that may feature in my army on parade if I can get around to it
