Mmmm, tasty. Did you use Forge World's weathering powders?

Looking great.
What colour(s) do you use for your mud?

The mud was sponged on using Scorched Brown, Bestial Brown and Graveyard earth - no fancy FW powders for me yet.

The Siege Shield art will either be awesome or a disaster. We will have to see if my painting lives up to my imagination unsure.png

The challenge has been set!

You also stole the yellow and black warnings on the doors ;)

I am painting as fast as I can! :(

I do need to work to pay for my plastic addiction.

.

This HAS been a slower than usual project.

You got this...

Paint from the back to the front....

For me it was

Red background

lightning bolt,

buildings and rubble

flames

the Lion/Angel

rubble the Lion is laying on

http://i172.photobucket.com/albums/w20/fred40k2002/Deathwing/Sarge2011-1.jpg

You are gonna have a couple more layers in that row of gravestones..  just dont paint anything into the background once you are done with it.

It is a nice banner thumbsup.gif

The things in my poor pencil sketch (I failed art at school) where not gravestones but window arches msn-wink.gif

This is where I am up to at the moment - not to happy with the Angel of Death even though I have really only just started on him. Don't forget that I still have to muddy it up after I have finished the artwork so the base of the siege shield is going to stay black. The Angel is bleached bone cause there would have been too much grey otherwise. His arm and wings need some serious work but that is for tomorrow. Also the picture is a lot brighter than in real life, censored.gif phone camera!

I think the wing is a little low...  the pinion should be well above the angel's head.  I really like the fire effects, is that a stipple brush?

Doing something on a large plate like this takes stones, and so far, you are doing exceptionally well...

The fire was done with a size 0 paintbrush painting the following colours, in order, in "waves" using the tip of the brush on a Mechrite red base then washed in a very watered down Burnt umber wash.

Bad moon yellow

Sunburst yellow

Golden yellow

Fiery orange

Blazing orange

Blood red

Finally small lines of white added at the very tip of the flames.

Back to the Angel wings tonight :(

How about having the fire rise in the middle, toward where the cannon sticks out?

I like the reaper's shield but -and you may not want to here this at this point- I do think the position...the pose..is a little unnatural.

I did not want to hear it ;) I don't disagree though.

To change the flames now would be difficult so I think they will stay. Some of the problem areas will be weathered away in the final version so I think the main problem at the moment is the wing.

I did say it could be awesome or a disaster ;)

I will be trying hard but I am better at winged swords.....

Wicked wicked wicked!

I have two important suggestions:

- Drop it for a few days and work on something else. If you got stuck at whatever (ie the sword arm angle/positioning, making the wings bigger, etc)...let it rest.

- DO NOT PICK UP A BRUSH IF IN THE MOOD OF "I'm sure I can fix this quick and dirty"... we've all done that and regretted.

Now is the time to tap on your painting disciple and habit...and realize if you need to take a break from this project, even for a few days.

And don't worry about your fans: I'll protect you and if anybody asks for new pics I'll post my disgraceful attempts so their eyes fall out hehe

One of the things that is throwing the flames off for me is that they are backward... Fire is always hotter and brighter at the lower center part of the flame, except for stray tongues of it that lick upward.

The other thing that seems a tad off to me is the flatness of the shield when the rest of the image has perspective. It's like it has been pressed flat against glass in an otherwise 3D portrayal. It looks great, just off from the rest of the image.

I actually think the wing is good, I don't really have a problem with that at all, and unless you were specifically trying to get it to have a natural flowing curve, it looks fine, as if it is folded up against the other wing along his back.

You are a brave man taking this on, but you have done a great job so far (far better than my freehand banner is coming along sketch-wise) and it has come together nicely. As you said, it will likely alter some when you start weathering the image and the siege shield.

Looking forward to seeing more progress!

Taking a break, having a nice meal out and a bottle of wine or two and will give it some thought. Thanks for all the feedback, I will be taking it all on board. :)

Thanks for the advice Bryan ;)

I am giving this a break until Monday, clear my head, look at life anew and then hit the paints like a mad hurricane.

I have to admit the angels shield needs a forced perspective to fit into the rest of the scene but I just don't think I will be able to pull it off being an art class drop out ;)

I will be relying on hiding the error behind the weathering to follow.

I am not happy with the wing and will have to address it again. It just did not end up how I wanted it so I will be going for the simpler version.

@Bryan: I can see what you are getting at with the flames being reversed and I have to agree with you but I like how they have turned out. They are the part of the Siege shield which I am happiest with so I will be keeping them as they are - sorry blush.png I think that when the weathering and mud is done then a lot of the poorer sections will be hidden/reduced and it will be ok in the end. "Hope springs eternal Baldric!"

I must admit that I have seriously challenged myself with this project - but nothing ventured, nothing gained. I still have faith that it will all turn out well in the end.

Please bear with this work in progress and have faith in the Lion and the Emperor. By His will, all shall be as it should. I am quietly confident that it will not be a complete disaster.

Thanks again for all the advice. It is much appreciated. thanks.gif

Dude, no need to apologize for liking things how they are. :D That's how most flames get painted on minis anyway, almost like a tradition. :) And there's nothing like tradition for Space Marines.

Still looking forward to how things will turn out.
