Need help naming/filling out my DIY chapter, w/ pics!

Hi all,

It aint much but at table top the stuff dosent look to bad. Going to re-do the Tac squad strip and start fresh, they were dipped a long time ago and now im a bit better painter (not by much) and I dont like the shine effect. So I need some help with a name and some back story. Its a crime that I have been playing with these guys as long as I have and still havent flushed them out yet. A rough Idea I was going with was a Raven Guard successor chapter (chapter Icon is a white claw/talon with blood on the end.) whos home planet was destroyed and chapter almost wiped out during an invasion by a Nurgle Chaos warband. Homeless and with half a chapter they pledge there loyalty to an inquisitor by the name of (???) who saved the chapter from the brink of annilation during the Chaos invasion. I have a bunch more models and generaly play with a drop pod heavy list. Plan to use a Padro Counts as for my chapter master and add two storm talons.

Okay, running through the basic story and most of it sounds like a good foundation to build off of. I would, however, ditch the bit with the Inquisitor - Chapters do not pledge loyalty to anyone but the Emperor (unless they go renegade). My advice would be to have the Chapter get out of dodge under their own steam as it is unlikely the scenario involved would dictate another group or individual helping a Chapter run away (something the Chapter will be very sore over) and receive any form of excessive loyalty. I would also suggest combining the Nurgle warband invasion idea with the loss of their home planet (if it wasn't already combined), killing two birds with one stone.

 

So, what do we have? We have a Raven Guard successor. What sort of age do you wish the Chapter to be? Would you like a venerable one with a lot of history or would you prefer a newer Chapter that has yet to become set in it's ways? Is there any preference for a particular form of warfare you may wish them to specialise in (if any)? Or would you rather have something a little more generalised, something more rounded?

 

Now with the current situation the chapter is in (homeless and under-strength), this is a great chance to explore what the Chapter believes and how they go about fighting. Do they stick to their previous convictions or are they willing to change with the times and employ new ideas or new strategies?

My first idea was "Vampires," as the Chapter symbol looked like a blood-soaked fang. Other ideas include "Blood Talons" (you already wrote half the name on the standard) and "Blood Hawks."

I like that one, personally. Has a good feel to it in regard to BDB's Chapter.

Good points, Maybe it should be re-worded to be something along the lines of they owe this Inquisitor a great Debt and come give him a hand when a world needs to be burned.

Im liking the idea of a newer chapter that just can seem to catch a break and gets kicked in head quite a bit but always manages to barely avoid annihilation time and time again. Im not saying that there a bunch of loser space marines but they just have pretty awful luck sometimes and seem to end up in crappy situations. For there combat style it would kinda typical raven guard lots of surgical strikes n such.

As to that I have a large Nurgle CSM army that I want to tie in where its the warband that almost destroyed there chapter and converted many of the loyal marines to become followers of Nurgle (in the there last moments before death kinda deal). So my Nurgle force has a bunch of ex-loyal marines from my chapter in it. Do you have a good way I could spin this with out seeming to Dark Angely?

Hmm... make it public? That way the chapter is under constant scrutiny and is obliged to find and destroy their traitorous kin, for their own good.

Ok that's a good idea. What do you think is a better angle, that the blood hawks are angry, and hate there fallen brothers and hunt them to attone for there chapters shame. Or that the blood hawks are mournful and pitty there fallen brothers and hunt them to ease there torment? Thanks for all the help by the way I'm getting a lot of good stuff.

Why not both? They are angry at their brothers turning and would strike them down without a moments thought but are remorseful at the grievous blow their Chapter took, spiritually and physically, when it's own turned from the Emperor. So, they could be hateful and bombastic on the field of battle but solemn and contrite for their shared 'sins'.
