Knight design opinions

Recommended Posts

I'd like the opinions of those who dwell in this sub-forum, I'm thinking of making some knight paladins and after researching for the past while I'm left wondering which style is more popular with AM fans?

I'm partial to most aspects of the early Knight design by Jes Goodwin but certain aspects of the Dave Andrews plastics appeal to me as well, namely the more sculpted industrial looking upper torsos.

I'd love to hear some thoughts on this, as well as any on the different Knight versions as well (wardens, lancers etc.)

So looking at this one, first thing I wonder is, do I go for the simplified design? or do I try to include enough details to make it look like it could actualy function as a walker? I find most GW designs force you to not try to analyze the design so much, more form over function so to speak. Middle ground?...

I like some of the craziness of the earliest designs? But the general systemisation that the 1994/1995 models had did help tie them all together.

You may (hopefully) find this page useful when looking for ideas about how to make them in 40k scale. It has almost every converted knight titan on the internet... http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/topic/248882-knight-reference-thread/

Thanks, I'm very familiar with the reference thread :) I've browsed through it many times. It's been a valuable tool.

Oh good, glad someone other than me uses it! I did wonder slightly if I was completely wasting my time...

The one knight titan I haven't yet seen is one using the Forgefiend/Maulerfiend torso. I think it'd make an amazing Warden. I may get round to doing that, but it won't be until April.

There are no rules for knight titans, and no official models, so no official base sizes. CDs are cheap, everyone has a few broken ones right? Personally I'm using bases the size of the Large Oval, same as flyers/dreadknights/forgefiends.

Thanks for the link Gaius, not a bad design. I like some of the sleeker design aspects of it. Might need to incorperate some of it into my design :)

Yeah Mitey, after my post above I looked around for some info on bases, some are using 140 mm (5.5 inches) some are using CD's a CD is about 120 mm (4.75 inches) what's the size of the flyer base? Whatever size I decide on I'm thinking I'll head over to the machine shop near my work and get them to cut me a few from aluminum on thier lathe.

I've started doing some 3D mock ups of some ideas.

The GW flyer/large 40k monster bases are ovals, about 120mm by 90mm. I actually use Renedra plastic ones as they're much cheaper, although they're a fraction smaller (115mm by 88mm).

How about something like this

Thought I'd share what I've been putting together when i've had time. It's just a mock up, the parts are just placeholders for what I'll eventually have in place, but the general shape is there and I thought it might generate some more discussion. The stick looking bit on the left of the shot is what I'm using for scale at the moment, it's 15 cm high. The base is 14 cm in diameter.

I purchased this thinking it was dreadnought size, it's actually 1 1/2 times bigger. I would imagine it'd be a knight worthy miniature  Due to the nature of the miniature line, it's a great fit too as it features the lightning bolts and human face that much of the emperor's mechanicum side seems to favor

Sorry for the double post.

Here's a sub par photo I snapped of the lower leg I have done. I have the outer armour designed just need to make it, I want to have it removable so once I figure that part out I'll finish them. I'm going to start a separate thread for this so stay tuned.

Here is my version of a Knight Warden. Built originally as a dreadnaught for my army I quickly realized my folly. I increased his mass and now he stands a full size taller than my Bjorn Dread.

My personal opinion is that making the Knight comparable to a Warhound is wrong although I have seen some wonderful large builds.

I have found it very difficult to play my Knight in pick up games using him as a counts as model. So I combine my wolves with grey knights and use him as a dread knight. He has fun walking around the battle field then.

He still is a WIP. I will be changing the claw arm up soon.

Does anyone know if official rules are coming out for Knights in reg. 40k or Apoc?

I like this as a knight myself. If I didn't want to build one I would go with this one...

I totally agree with the oval dread knight base. tossing your model on this base also lets you play it as a dread knight....
