Thanks Kizz, glad someone seems to like it. :P

Ya, at first the dapple effect was something I honestly didn't care for (was originally done on accident) but its really grown on me. Like you said, it reminds me of clotted blood but at the same time it reminds me of marble in a way.... Which works as we all known marble is often used to build cathedrals. ;)

No worries! I think it helps give the flat armour areas a bit of depth. I'm glad you're happy with it. You should be :)

Noctus cornix, I really like everything you've got going on here. The mix of fluff and model pieces is great, and it is very nice to see that you are willing to put some time into the story behind your units. The models themselves look simply brutal in a lovely way.

I really like your start on the paint, I agree that it looks great and adds depth to the model. I hope it isn't a hard effect to achieve, because an entire army like that would look smashing!

(Congrats on your semester, BTW!)

Hail to the Ruined King, my kin. I do apologize for the lack of updating. I've been busy starting my new job so that's kept me a little occupied. On the bright side though, a new cash flow will allow me the purchase of delicious new models and kits for my dark constructs. You will see more soon, I assure you.

So, recently I purchased for myself the Chaos Warshine from fantasy. As many of you may already know, this kit is just gorgeous with a delicious plethora of bits to be used for all sorts of things. While I have not gotten to using anything else from the kit (plans are in the works) the two mutated Ogres were just begging to be turned into Chaos Spawns.

First thing I have to say about these guys is that they look so much better than the standard chaos spawn models. They actually have chaos star scars on their bodies and just over all look much cooler. That being said, their heads looked a tad bit silly to me... and well, I just couldn't get past that. Thankfully, I had a bunch of extra bits from the chaos Spawns I created for a friend, so why not merry the two together?

One thing I want to do with each Chaos Spawn is I want to give each of them at least some sense of story. Chaos Spawns have their own way of being fairly cool that they're not just mindless abominations but were champions, preachers and sometimes even lords who were gifted either by the love or spite of their gods to turn them into virtually mindless creatures. I want to try and convey that with each chaos spawn, giving them a unique story and feel to them.

So first guy might be a little cut and dry, Chaos Champion who falls into addiction with the boons of chaos and taking skulls of champions he has slain. Due to his immense size, I would say he was at the cusp of Daemonhood but feel short, now nothing but an Avatar of brutality. Haven't completely decided on anything, origins or anything like that, but I wanted to get that hulking brute feel with a giant scything blade for an arm to lop of the heads of his prey.

Now this next guy was hilariously inspired by the Goblin King from watching the Hobbit again recently. When I was looking over the second body, I realized that this guy was one obese dude and wouldn't make for a very dynamic or interesting pose unless I tried to turn him into say a nurgle spawn. But I didn't exactly want to make him very nurgly, I've been wanting to make these guys have an undivided feel to them. Powers from all different Gods, not just one. So suddenly I got the idea while I was watching the hobbit and flipping through the Black Crusade book, why not make an Apostate spawn?

So long story short, the idea for this guy is that he was a human preacher, once a well respected member of the Ecclesiarchy who found the love of the Dark Gods. Turn to them, he basked in their glory, proclaiming himself to be their lips and delighting in all mutations they have given him. Once devolving into what one would normally register as a Chaos Spawn, this fine fellow did not turn to the gibbering behemoth as most due. Instead, he retained his mind (though he never had any sanity to retain) and now uses his new form as proof that he is their voice. As you can see, I went for something very different with this model. his two top arms as raised up high as if in worship, cresting the massive chaos star literally ripping through his skin. His pointing finger I think I might paint with an eldritch glow, allowing him to carve runes in stone and metal to preform sickening rituals for to summon daemons and call upon for the gift of the Gods for his mortal servants.

Obviously not completed but certainly got a lot done. As you know, comments and criticism always welcome.

Enjoy.

Every spawn has a beginning... that actually makes sense, very interesting idea Noctus.

The first one looks fine, the head goes pretty well with the pose, and it looks very menacing.

I am not digging the head on the second one though, but I you might be able to make it look better with a paint job.

Maybe he can tattoo himself with his special finger.....

If we're going to be perfectly honest, I don't like his head either. Its ugly, bloated, and completely unappealing.... Which is why it was absolutely perfect for this guy. He's not supposed to have that badass appeal that everyone else does. He's to make you cringe in distaste. One thing I will say though is that I like how, aside from the horns, it still has the semblance of a human face. Two eyes, a nose, and a mouth.

He's an ugly f***er but that's what he's supposed to be.

So I guess no one really liked the two Spawns... Ohwell, can't please them all.

Anywho, a small update concerning my Khorne Berzerkers. Due to the fact that he isn't exactly happy with their codex, my friend is getting out of Chaos. Because of this, he's trying to sell off all his chaos models and bits. I've been mulling through them for things and while I haven't purchased anything substantial yet, I did manage to find two old Bloodletter axes just lying around. Now, one thing that I didn't like about my Khorne Berzerkers was my champion. Its not that I didn't like the guy, because I do, but I just didn't feel right with him having a Lightning Claw. I know game-wise one of the superior weapons for the champion to take... But it just felt off. He needed a Power Axe. And, well now that I had these Blood Letter axes, now he does. His head still isn't attached, simply because I'm not entirely sure how I want him to be facing. Should he be off to the side or facing forward? What are your thoughts?

I think your spawn look suitably grotesque and interesting all at the same time!  I really like the one with the star coming out of his back, but I almost feel like it should be dynamically erupting from him.  I'm not sure how you could really capture that, maybe with a little bit of green stuff splayed out and up with a couple of fishing lines with super glue drips painted to look like blood shooting out?

I vote for face-forward on the Champion.  I agree it makes him look like he's willing to slice and dice or possibly just eat your face directly...

I like it sideways, it's as if to say I'm looking over the battlefield searching for my next kill, not hey you ima bite your face off because I'm a mindless bezerker.

I like things khornate to show intelligence and not just blind battle rage.

Okay man, I gotta ask, how exactly did you do that marble effect on the chosen? It looks really awesome and i'm dying to know.

Honestly?...

The 'Marble' effect is purely my inability to create a solid red.

I began with a handpainted base coat of Abaddon Black

Then a layer of old Mechandrite red mixed with a tiny bit of blood red (old paints yo)

Then a layer of Blood Red

At this point I realized that I could still see splotches of black here and there. I had hoped that it wouldn't be noticeable so I only added a second layer of blood red over parts where it was heavy.

Then a thin wash of baal red

Finish it with a thick wash of Nuln oil

And that's how you have it... My complete trainwreck of a paintsceheme that some how looks cool....

I personally see it as off. Too bright and pure. You could go farther with the splotching, maybe with browns or oranges, but really if I were you I'd have used a darker off-red for it. If you have any Scab Red, Wazdakka Red, or Khorne Red as your red instead of the brighter Blood Red. I still mostly use old paints, and let me tell you Blood Red is as bright as red gets without turning orange or pink.
