Hey guys, I'd like to share something with you all that you might appreciate:

(Don't know why the 2nd one has a black background - stupid Flickr)

These images have been drawn using a tablet. You may notice that it's a little sketchy in areas; that's due to my inexperience with a tablet. You may also notice the almost identical forms of the Templars; this is because they are each not one whole image, but several images layered together with replaceable parts. As a result, I can quickly replace helmets, tabards, and eventually weapons without redrawing the entire figure. Theoretically, it could build a posable figure for animation, somewhat like Flashgitz's work with Space Hulk.

Now, for the most part, this is merely practice with a tablet and jumbling ideas, but for a while now I've been wanting to do a narrative of some kind. I had hoped that these sketches may help me build a comic, or even animation (most likely not - I know nothing about animating), and the multi-component nature of the images would help me produce them at a steady rate without having to redraw everything. But the range of poses would be limited and my first drafts are a little cartoonish, which both work against my imagined narratives and the 40k style in general. I could do a light-hearted comic strip but I am not a funny man, my jokes would suck....

I don't know yet... In any case, I'd like to share this with you and like to know what you think.

Some notes-

Perspective of the shoulders, the closest one is smaller than the further one.

The bolter's action is too far forward, a bit too high up, and too small compared to the magazine.  That gun will explode. :D

The legs are very...inflated, for lack of a better word.  Round and bulging at the middles.

Personal preference here, but I think of Power Armor as coming to sharp, flat ends rather than the smooth and organic look of these.  More armory and less balloony.  Even some of the edges/corners on the bolter are surprisingly rounded.

You nailed the Mk. IV helmet and the Mk VII helmet.

The tabard is pretty well done.

The coloring over all isn't bad, just a few odd spots.

Although the sizes are a bit odd, the shapes of the shoulders are solid.  Those things are pure drawing evil, so kudos there.

The backpack is well done.

Something went wonky with the positioning of the feet.  The foreground one is off.

That's about it.  Still better than what I can do with a tablet in more than a few ways, and I can't color at all so much respect there :)  If you do go comicy with these, I would be delighted to submit jokes that no one would laugh at, so as to take some of the shame off your shoulders. :teehee:

Thanks for the compliments, guys.

@Firepower: I laughed when I noticed the tiny ejector. As for the feet: well, for whatever reason I suck with feet. As for the soft edges, it's sort of the style I adopted, plus trying to shadow and highlight the black armour was difficult.

At this stage, I don't have any solid ideas for a Black Templar focused comic. I'm leaning towards a comic chronicling the events of my Black Templar Assault Marine in Deathwatch - I have a lot more ideas to work with and I think I can make it amusing enough to suit the artistic style.

This here is a draft of a Deathwatch Marine - sorry, it's an Ultramarine, but I wanted to get some other shoulder pads ready.

And here's a quick job based on a sketch I did a while ago after my character smashed a bunch of Genestealers - not perfect but decent considering the time it took:

Fair enough on the artistic license with the rounded Power Armor.  It actually kinda reminds me of the old school artwork like you would see on the 2nd Edition boxes and books.

A point I missed before- the legs are awful short, in terms of proportions.  Compare them to the length of the arms and you should see what I mean.  Generally, standing casually with arms down, you want the tips of the fingers to reach about 1/2 to 2/3 down the thigh.  His would be a bit passed the knee.  So I would stretch the thigh and lower leg segments.
